The Hajj is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. It is the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca that takes place in the last month of the year, and that all Muslims are expected to make at least once during their lifetime. As with the sawm (fasting), exceptions are made for those who are physically or financially unable to fulfill this obligation, and one is commanded not to make the hajj if to do so would cause hardship for his or her family. However, those unable to go themselves may fulfill their obligation by sending someone in their stead. Over two million Muslims make the Hajj annually. The Hajj consists of a five-day excursion to Mecca and other holy sites such as Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah.

The first one being that they are Muslim. The second and third conditions are those of sanity and puberty. A Muslim has to have reached puberty and be of sound mind for his or her Hajj to become a duty. Divine rewards and punishments are given because of human choice between good and evil. Since a child or an insane person lack the ability to distinguish between good and evil, no religious duties are required of them. This principle of non-obligation is based on the following Hadith in which the Prophet was reported to have said: "The pen is raised from (the book of deeds) of three: the sleeper until he awakes, the child until he becomes a young man, and the insane until he regains his sanity." However, those who help such individuals perform Hajj are rewarded for their efforts. When the Prophet was asked by a woman about her child making Hajj, he replied that the child could, but the reward would be given to her. Hence the insane individual who made Hajj while in a state of insanity is still required to make Hajj if he regains his sanity. Likewise, children who make Hajj are required to do so again when they grow up. The Prophet said, "Any child who makes Hajj then reaches puberty must make another Hajj." The fourth condition is financial stability. The person making the pilgrimage must be free of debt, so that they are able to bear the expenses of the pilgrimage as well as provide …show more content…
There have been a great number of deaths that have occurred because of the amount of people being there. People are mainly killed due to stampedes. In 2015, more than 700 people were killed in a stampede, and more than 900 were injured. The stampedes occur because of the stone-throwing ritual, and has caused a considerable amount of deaths in recent years. In 1990 1,426 pilgrims are killed in a stampede. The amount of people that have been killed during this holy pilgrimage is an appalling occurrence. The Hajj is something that people wait their whole lives to take, and to see that people making the pilgrimage are being killed is truly
Duty may be performed without strain or reflection of desire, which means your duty, or responsibility, should be performed without hesitation. “Dutifulness could be an account of a morality with no hint of religion” (Murdoch 364). Religion’s demand for morality and being good trumps a person’s decision to
“Religion” is an inherently social creation which functions to naturalize certain behaviors and ideologies to maintain social order (Martin 94). In his book “A Critical Introduction to the Study of Religion”, Craig Martin introduces the concept of a “cultural toolbox”, comprised of the concepts, values, traditions, icons, figures, texts, and stories in a culture that represent and reinforce the elements of the society (97-98). To maintain social order and convince others to conform to the proposed, religions employ a tactic known as “legitimation” to justify traditions, practices, and ideologies using the “cultural toolbox” of a society (Martin 94).
The first is, testifying to God's One-ness: The declaration "There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is His prophet. " The second is, Prayer. Prayer must happen at least five times a day, and must be done by bowing and facing towards the Mecca. Also, everyone must stand in straight lines and if women do come, however not required, must stand behind the men. The third is, giving to charity.
The Hajj or pilgrimage to Makkah is one of the five pillars of Islam "arkan-al-Islam”- Its purpose is essentially to facilitate the act of submission to Allah which is pinnacle to all followers of Islam. "Perform the pilgrimage and the visit [to Mecca] for Allah" Surah 2:196. It has enormous significance, not only for the pilgrim undertaking the Hajj but also for the wider Muslim community, the Umma, as it allows for all individuals to gain unification of faith. Such purpose can be examined through considering various rituals; the stand before Allah "wuquf", the stoning of the pillars at Mina, the commemoration of the festival of sacrifice "Id-ul-Adha", the circling of the Ka'bah and drawing water from the well of Zamzam. Such rituals give example to a profound meaning of the Islamic faith and upon completion, the individual is fulfilling to the ultimate goal of Islam, a more perfect submission to Allah.
They must not use any perfume. No animals or insects should be killed during the hajj. No plants should be damaged or destroyed. Nothing dishonest or unkind should be done during the hajj. No weapon should be carried.
The Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam, and is required of every Muslim who has the means to go (Ahmed and Balaban). It is a pilgrimage to the Islamic holy land, a chance to walk in the footsteps of the Prophets Ibrahim and Muhammad. It is a statement of faith and dedication to Islam that thousands of Muslims experience each year that strengthens their connection to Allah.
Moral obligations should typically not be so demanding that enormous sacrificies must be made in order to fulfill them (Liao, Savulescu, & Sheehan, 2007).
In the Islamic faith there are five pillars that they must follow to their best ability. The Salaht, the Hajj, they must give to the poor, fasting during the month of Ramadan, and repetition of the creed, "There is no God but Allah; Muhammad is the messenger of Allah." These pillars are more like obligations in the Islamic religion.
In my opinion, the last three pillars of Islam, mentioned above, connect the Islamic people the most. The Third pillar, Zakat, or charity to the poor, requires each Muslim to pay 2.5% of everything he or she owns to the poor each year. (Molly 442) The fourth pillar requires Muslims to fast during the month of Ramadan.
The Hajj is one of the five pillars of the Islamic faith and it is mandatory that it must be undertaken at least once in the life of a mature able-bodied Muslim adult. The Hajj is said to mirror many of the journeys taken in the Qur’an that are important in the Islamic faith such as the journey taken by Adam and eve when they were expelled from Eden and the journey of Abrahams wife, Hagar, as she searched between the two hills of Safa and Marwa in search of water for her son and finally, it is thought that the journey is to trace the footsteps of the prophets Abraham and Ishmael during the journey that Allah sent Abraham to sacrifice his son. The importance of pilgrimage in the Muslim faith cannot be over looked and it is written in the
Just about every religion has one thing that a person must do in their lifetime in order to go on after death and Islam is one of those religions. It is required of a Muslim to make the pilgrimage to Mecca and perform the given tasks at least once in their lifetime.
As a muslim parent they have the reponsiblity to instill all relgious morals, ethic’s and traditon’s into their young. It is different for girls and boys an example of this is prayer. The key purpose of Salat (prayer) in Islam is to stand before God and ask for guidance on the straight path (the correct way on life) and to give thanks and praise to their almighty God. Salat is an important act to perform correctly as it is one of the five pillars of Islam (Suliman, 2014). The practices that are most important to Muslims are the five pillars of Islam. The five pillars involve Shahadah, salat, zakat, sawm and Hajj (BBC, 2009). Salah is the first act of worship (Salat) and was made obligatory by Allah for all those who have faith. As society changes it is becoming harder for Muslim families to keep t...
...t. The aim of the holiday is to promote strong bonds within the Islamic community by fostering sisterhood and brotherhood through showing that every Muslim is equal under the Gods eyes. The even strips away all the markers of pride, wealth and social status as reflected in their dressing (Kheirabaradi 157). It is also one of the pillars of Islam and specifically is the fifth pillar of Islam. According to Islamic teaching, every individual who can afford and is physically able should visit Mecca in their lifetime (Kheirabaradi 153).
The holy city of Mecca has a meaning that has been transformed over the last decade through the construction of new architectural sites. The city is the location that Muslims take a pilgrimage to on a yearly basis called the Hajj. This custom has been going on for centuries, and lasts for about a week. During this time, all, or most Muslims in the world, stay in the city at the same time. This helps businesses and the government in Mecca substantially.
On Hajj The religion of Islam is held up by five pillars, known as the five. pillars of Islam. These are five ritual duties that Muslims view as central to their faith.
