During the year 1889, two researchers, Joseph Von Mering and Oskar Minkowski, discovered the disease that is known today as diabetes. Diabetes is a disease in which the insulin levels (a hormone produced in unique cells called the islets of Langerhans found in the pancreas) in the bloodstream are irregular and therefore affect the way the body uses sugars, as well as other nutrients. Up until the 1920’s, it was known that being diagnosed with diabetes was a death sentence which usually affected “children and adults under 30.” Those who were diagnosed were usually very hungry and thirsty, which are two of the symptoms associated with diabetes. If the levels continue to remain high over an extended period of time, damage can be done to the kidneys, cardiovascular systems; you can get eye disorders, or even cause nerve damage. When the glucose levels are low in one’s body, it is called hypoglycemia. A person begins to feel very jittery, and possibly dizzy. If that occurs over a period of time, the person can possibly faint. Diabetes mellitus occurs in three different forms - type 1, type 2, and gestational.
As you may or may not already know, diabetes is a non-communicable disease. Learning about diabetes interests me because my grandmother and grandfather are both diabetic. I see what they go through every day with pricking their finger, injecting insulin and watching what they eat. It seems to be a hassle, but for them- it’s their life.

Diabetes is a very serious disease that takes many lives each year. It is a lifelong disease that can be fatal to both adults and children if it is uncontrolled. Diabetes does not have to be fatal if certain precautions are taken. If diabetics maintain a healthy diet and watch their carbohydrate intake they can keep their diabetes under control. Monitoring blood sugar is also necessary to live a healthy life. If diabetics know the right way of maintaining their diabetes, they can live a very normal and active life.
In recent years, there has been an alarm over the rising sedentary lifestyle we live. This lifestyle has led to an increase in hypokinetic disease which are diseases caused by lack of physical activity. These diseases such as obesity and diabetes (type 2) are mostly preventable but still affect a lot of our population. The causes of these diseases continue to increase due to the inactive lifestyle we choose to live. The amounts of fattening and sugary food we consume have also increased the prevalence of these conditions. Furthermore, there are personal factors that can increase the chance of them occurring. One of the best things that a person with diabetes can do for themselves is to learn how to manage their diabetes and know when they are in trouble. It is up to those that are health care professionals to know what to look for and how to treat a diabetic emergency. As with any other emergency, a diabetic emergency is an authentic emergency and time is very valuable.

According to Dale Evans, “Life is not over because you have diabetes. Make the most of what you have, be grateful.” Diabetes can be under control if the person actually takes care of his/her self. Exercise and watching the food eaten is the most important factor to keeping ones self healthy.
