Throughout the post apocalyptic novel, The Road, the father demonstrated three outstanding qualities of both a father and a human. The dad displayed acts of bravery, which rivaled those of Joshua Chamberlain, King Leonidas, and countless others. The love shown in all his actions resembled that of Jesus Christ, and Gandhi. Finally the resourcefulness the dad displayed kept both him, and his son alive much longer than most other humans on the planet. Courage, love, and resourcefulness are three qualities, and characteristics, which define the father in The Road. “But he is a man with a mission. Death knocked on the door constantly for these two survivors, but the dad saved the day every time even up to his last breaths. They came across lucky break, after lucky break, but if it had not been for the father’s resourcefulness they would not have taken advantage of them. Occasionally the breaks were hard to get and find, but the dad came through. On the beach, they saw a boat out in the ocean, and rather than waste the supplies on board the dad made countless journeys back and forth to the boat. In the process, he obtained large quantities of life saving supplies, which kept them going. Without the dad’s resourcefulness, they would not have even made it out of the fire that destroyed the earth. The father in many ways represents the best of humanity. He displays bravery in the face of fear without hesitation. Love motivates him not greed, not selfishness, nor self interest. In addition to these two grand qualities, he keeps himself, and his son alive through his resourcefulness.
