Why did you start the first chapter (The Family) with explaining what your autobiography is? I started the chapter with explaining what my autobiography is about because it is not like other autobiographies. I start by saying that this is a testimony and not something I learned from a book , because this is based on real life experiences and not a thing that I learned from someone. I wanted to share not only my joy and sadness, but I am sharing the joy and sadness of the people that were there as well. The Nahual is a very important thing in our spiritual journey. It is like the shadow that will help and protect the person in his or her life . Every baby is born with one and we have a different Nahual for every day of the week. For example, if the baby is born on a Tuesday then the parents will know that their baby will be bad tempered because Tuesday is the Bull day. It is an element in our spiritual journey. Life in our community really made me appreciate the person I became. I started having the feeling of responsibility because I had things to do in the community and I was at a young age. I joined the communal work and started helping with the harvesting of maize. Then, I took up my mothers’ work, which was being the coordinator for the community. Working in the community really helped me make new friends and become close with other members of the community. I really liked the life in the community because every person liked helping each other and everyone had their own job to help the community. Question 6 How was your experience when you went to Guatemala City? I was really scared of the city; I thought it was like a monster because we always lived in the mountains. When I first arrived there I thought it would be a big step in my life. I remember when we first arrived I didn’t know what the cars were; I thought they are animals so I asked my father and he told me they were cars. I didn’t know what they were. My father told me that it is like the big trucks that we had for traveling to and out the fincas and to carry things. However, rich people don’t have to carry things so they have the smaller and nicer cars. I thought all cars would pump into each other but when a car stopped all the other cars had to stop.
