Introduction
Music is a very fascinating universal phenomenon. Almost everyone likes some sort of music, whether it be the twang of a country song or the intensity of a German rap. Music has the ability to completely change the mood of a situation. It has extensively been investigated and used as a form of therapy for the mind. Therefore it would be interesting to see if it had any impact on a person’s physical ability as well.
Music has been suggested to affect the body’s physiological patterns in many ways. A study done in 2003 (Yamamoto et. al) exemplified the wavering levels of neurotransmitters as the type of music was changed. When the participants listen to slow-rhythm music their plasma levels of norepinephrine decreased, and when they listened to fast-rhythm music their plasma levels of epinephrine increased. Norepinephrine is a hormone generally known for mechanisms of the sympathetic nervous system, originating the fight or flight response. When it is lowered, the body’s stress level is suppressed, caused by a decrease in blood pressure. Epinephrine is a similar hormone, commonly referred to as adrenaline, which has been known to produce sudden responses to combat stress. An increase in plasma levels would increase the heart rate and dilate air passages to promote the expansion of oxygen to the body’s vital organs. By simply choosing a different pace of music, the way our physiology works can be completely altered.

This experiment was performed twelve times, on three subjects, over a period of 4-6 weeks. The first subject was a six-year-old boy named Gideon (results are shown in Figs.1-4). His initial blood pressure was 92/53 mmHg; this stayed consistent throughout the entire experiment. The first genre of music that was tested was rock music (Fall Out Boy: My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark). The first time the experiment was performed, his blood pressure was 98/55 mmHg, the second time it was 99/56 mmHg, the third time it was 99/55 mmHg, and the fourth time it was 98/56 mmHg. During the first trial, his blood pressure was 91/53 mmHg, the second time it was 92/54 mmHg, the third time it was 91/52 mmHg, and the fourth time it was 92/53 mmHg.

There have always been discussions of the effects music has on ones behavior, and how it’s related to Psychology. The truth has never really been verified among common knowledge, but it’s usually something that intrigues people. They say heavy metal and rap can make teenagers violent, sad and depressing music can make teenagers sad and depressed, and some say it’s best to listen to classical music when doing schoolwork because it makes your brain more active. There have been many people that reported how music has effects on their behavior. It can lift their mood, “fuel the fire” when they’re angry, or even make it easier for them to fall asleep. People never really get the chance to research the actual science of music, and how it changes people attitudes.

When you listen to music during exercising, it might affect the way you work out because it is either a fast or slow tempo. Listening to music during a short intense amount of exercise might change how you feel about hard workouts and encourage you to continue with doing the same thing in the future. Unfortunately, the majority of the population does not attain these minimum physical activity requirements (Johnson & Taylor, 2011). Nowadays, physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for mortality in the world (World Health Organization, 2013). Effective strategies to improve the participation in physical activity are desperately needed (Johnson & Taylor, 2011). The middle-range theory proposed by Murrock and Higgins suggests that music, mood, and movement (MMM) can play a role in effecting participation in and intensity of physical activity and in turn, improve health outcomes (2009). More specifically, there are three theoretical statements that are of importance for this theory.

Researchers and neuroscientists have begun diligently studying the role of Baroque music in brain development (Coff). Many studies that have been conducted conclude that classical music intensifies the growth and memory retention of the brain (O’Donnell). The human body has also been proven to naturally respond to the beats and rhythms of music, whether positively or negatively. Music can affect the brain and body in many different ways. Classical music can increase learning abilities, change mood and spiritual awareness, and affect a person’s health.
