Over the course of history, humans have evolved from an active nomadic lifestyle to a sedentary way of life. However, this is a different type of sedentary lifestyle from the sedentary lifestyle seen currently. As people further enter the technological world, the active lifestyle slowly fades into the distant past. For instance, cars have replaced the need for walking to or from destinations. Another being, people no longer have to spend energy to hunt for food or grow their food. All they just have to open their refrigerator and pick out what they would like to consume. As a consequence of sedentary lifestyles and the consumption of more and more carbohydrates, stored away in adipose tissues in the body, the body no longer needs to expend more energy, only performing the essential functions to keep the person alive. This is the case because there is no extraordinary circumstance, such as farming or hunting, for the body to expend more energy, which leads to a rise in obesity and consequently the emergence of many concerning health-related issues, the biggest of them being diabetes. The rising prominence of diabetes in society is of utmost concern, for medical professionals to treat patients they must know the symptoms, diagnosis, and the effects of diet and insulin in the body. Diabetes mellitus, or Diabetes, is a metabolic disease with two distinct types: Type 1 and Type 2. The first type of diabetes results from the inability of the pancreas to secrete insulin which results from the destruction of pancreatic beta cells. Destruction of these beta cells is a cause of concern because they are the cells which produce insulin, a hormone which maintains normal blood glucose levels. Symptoms such as polyuria (excessive amount of urine... ... middle of paper ... ...re meals (ADA, 2015). The second is Biguanides, which lower blood glucose levels by decreasing the amount of glucose produced by the liver. Metformin is a type of biguanides which are taken two times a day; the only side effect is diarrhea which can be prevented if taken with food (ADA, 2015). The third is Meglitinides which are similar to Sulfonylureas in that Meglintides also stimulate beta cells to release insulin. There are two types of Meglitinides, Repaglinide, and Nateglide, which are taken before each meal (ADA, 2015). The fourth is Thiazolidinediones, which help insulin work better in the muscles and fat, and also reduce glucose production in the liver. There are two common types of Thiazolidinediones used today, Rosiglitazone and Pioglitazone which are monitored closely for liver problems, and if they appear to increase chances of heart failure (ADA, 2015).
Type 1 diabetes develops when the beta-cells are killed off by the immune system. This is because an inflammation is caused which the immune system fights off, ultimately destroying all/majority of beta cells. The role of the beta cells is to produce insulin within the pancreas. The beta cells are signalled when to release insulin’s to certain parts of the body. A person with type 1 diabetes is likely to have lost 70-80%1 of their beta-cells mass which is why they must manually inject insulin into themselves to maintain a healthy blood glucose level. When the blood glucose level falls (hypoglycaemia) you begin to lose energy.
During the year 1889, two researchers, Joseph Von Mering and Oskar Minkowski, discovered the disease that is known today as diabetes. Diabetes is a disease in which the insulin levels (a hormone produced in unique cells called the islets of Langerhans found in the pancreas) in the bloodstream are irregular and therefore affect the way the body uses sugars, as well as other nutrients. Up until the 1920’s, it was known that being diagnosed with diabetes was a death sentence which usually affected “children and adults under 30.” Those who were diagnosed were usually very hungry and thirsty, which are two of the symptoms associated with diabetes. However, no matter how much they ate, their bodies wouldn’t be able to use the nutrients due to the lack of insulin.
According WebMD 2014. Diabetes mellitus (or diabetes) is a chronic, lifelong condition that affects your body's ability to use the energy found in food. There are three major types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes mellitus, type 2 diabetes mellitus and gestational diabetes. It is a hormonal disorder of the pancreas either decrease in insulin level also known as hypoinsulinism or increase in insulin level also known as hyperinsulinism. Lowered amounts, insufficient of, or ineffective use of insulin leads to the disorder of diabetes mellitus. It is common chronic disease requiring lifelong behavioral and lifestyle changes. According to Peakman (2012). The development of type 1 diabetes mellitus is a genetic and an autoimmune process that results in destruction of the beta cells of the pancreas, leading to absolute insulin deficiency. There is usually a pre-diabetic phase where autoimmunity has already developed but with no clinically apparent insulin dependency. Insulin autoantibodies can be detected in genetically predisposed individuals as early as 6-12 months of age. In persons genetically susceptible to type 1 diabetes, a triggering event, possibly a viral infection the leads to production of autoantibodies that kill the beta cells and results in decline and a lack of insulin secretion. According to Wherrett. It is caused by impaired insulin secretion and insulin resistance and has a gradual onset. Those with type 2 diabetes may eventually need insulin treatment. Gestational diabetes mellitus is glucose intolerance during pregnancy in a woman not previously diagnosed with diabetes, this may occur if placental hormones counteract insulin, causing insulin intolerance. Complications in diabetes mellitus includes: Hypoglycemia it is ca...
Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus is also referred to as insulin-dependent as the secretion of the hormone insulin by the pancreas is reduced to minor levels due to the destruction of the pancreatic beta cells by immune system of the body. Therefore, Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune condition due to the fact that the body is harming the pancreas with antibodies so beta cells cannot make any insulin for bloodstream to take in glucose. The fact that the cells in the body cannot take in glucose means that it builds up in the blood and hyperglycaemia occurs. This abnormally high level of blood glucose is able to harm the nervous system, tiny blood vessels in the kidneys, heart and the eyes. Type 1 Diabetes is fatal when left untreated as it then causes heart disease, kidney disease, damage to the nerves, stroke and
Diabetes is a chronic disorder of metabolism characterized by a partial or complete deficiency of the hormone insulin. With this, there are metabolic adjustments that occur everywhere in the body. Specific to this child is Type One Diabetes. This is characterized by demolition of the pancreatic beta cells, which produce insulin. Because of this, it leads to complete insulin deficiency. Within Type One diabetes, there are two different forms. First there is immune-mediated deficiency, which typically results from an autoimmune destruction of the beta cells. The second type is called idiopathic type one, in which the cause is unknown. (Wong, Hockenberry, Wilson, 2015)
Advancements in technology were said to be a large factor in the time spent being sedentary. The lifestyle of adolescents and young adults also plays a part in how sedentary and active they are. Neither author went on to explain exactly how the brain is affected by sedentary behavior.
Obesity is a very complex condition as there are many physiological and psychological dimensions to it. The complications accompanying the disease are multiple and are associated with the increased risk of many other medical conditions. It is thought that we live in an obesogenic environment due to an interaction of environmental, developmental and cultural influences. With the main cause of the disorder thought to be due to a combination of a sedentary lifestyle accompanied by an increased consumption of poor quality food with a high calorie and sugar content. The lack of energy expenditure could be explained by many individuals working a large number of hours, most days of the week in jobs that require minimal physical activity and it is often difficult to accomplish the recommended ...
The level of the population’s level of physical activity is becoming a major public health concern in the United States (Wahlgren, 2011). As a result of urban sprawl, Americans rely heavily on personal vehicles to travel to work or other destinations. This is leading to a sedentary life style for the public as they take to their cars to travel to their destination. The public’s perception of the environments in which they live in are likely influencing their behaviors resulting in their dependance on personal vehicles. (Wahlgren, 2011). The physical environment and peoples’ levels of physical activity are directly connected. Low density zoning and auto-dependent development is resulting in the promotion of sedentary life styles. Most activities, like commuting to work or shopping, requires the use of a personal vehicle because of the area’s isolation in residential zones and commercial zones (Ewing, 2010). Alternative modes like walking or bicycling are rather impractical, as the areas often have little to no sidewalks or other pedestrian friendly amenities (Marshall, 2009). The Low density design is developed because residential homes have fewer units per acre and commercial buildings tend to only be a couple of stories and spaced further apart. The sizes of lots tend to be bigger to accommodate large parking lots that are often oversized and unsafe for pedestrians.
Type one diabetes is the most common type of diabetes diagnosed in children and young adults. With this type of diabetes, the body destroys the insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas. Insulin is needed to transport glucose into the cells to use as an energy source. Because of the destruction of insulin cells, type one diabetes is insulin dependent, meaning insulin therapy is needed to treat the disease. Many of the common symptoms include: frequent urination, excessive thirst and hunger, extreme fatigue, blurry vision, weight loss, and slow healing of cuts and bruises (American Diabetes Association (ADA), 2013).
Diabetes is a disease that I came across when researching my maternal side of my family history. Diabetes is a disease that affects your pancreas an important organ in regulating blood sugar. When a person has diabetes there are two ways it can affect the pancreas because there are two types of the disease. Type-1 diabetes affects the pancreas by not allowing the body to produce enough insulin to keep the body’s blood sugar at a healthy number. The opposite is for Type-2 which produces too much insulin and gives the body too much insulin keeping the blood sugar number above healthy (Type-2).
Ways people quit smoking are by mental and note form reminders of why they are quitting, rewarding themselves, distraction, using gum or healthy snacks e.g celery and carrots, exercise, drinking cool water and nicotine patches or supplements.
Although there are no sure-fire recipes for good health, the mixture of healthy eating and regular exercise comes awfully close. adolescents are growing and building up their bodies that they will take with them for the rest of their life, it is important for them to take positive exercise and diet choices with them to ensure healthiness. Eating healthy foods and exercising regularly are challenging motives for almost everyone. Finding the time and motivation to devote to a healthy diet, workout routine, and eating healthy are all challenges for almost everyone. Many people will agree that it is difficult to balance those factors with other activities. Teaching our youth now how to live healthy lifestyles is important as they take those lifestyle
Many people struggle with their weight. Those who are on the heavy side oftent find it difficult to perform their daily tasks. Even walking for several minutes becomes a tiring activity for them on many occasions. Others can only imagine the physical effects of more intensive activities on people who are, frankly speaking, fat. John is one of those individuals who are on the heavy side. His sedentary life and his habit of eating more than his daily nutritional needs have led him to gain weight year after year. Now, John wants to turn things around. His problem is how he can lose weight without completely sacrificing his passion for food. In other words, John wants to decrease his body fat while still being able to enjoy his meals. For the
Living a long and healthy life requires more than just good luck. People all over the world go to the gyms and like to exercise for different reasons. Being physically active is the key to being physically and mentally fit, and helps people become a more balanced, physically fit person. They will not only stay healthier, but will be happier, live longer, and also sleep better. This will help boost a person's mental outlook, and also increase their self esteem. Physical fitness is one of the most important steps to a healthy body.
In regards to my current level of activity, I am kind of satisfied, but I do feel that I could use a tad more improvement. The types of activities I do to stay active are biking, rollerblading, or taking walks. However, I do these activities sporadically. There are plenty of days where I just sit around the house. What I should do to feel more satisfied is do these activities at more consistent schedule. So for example, I could rollerblade for forty minutes every morning. Doing these activities more often at a consistent pace would definitely improve my health and happiness.
