Little Red Riding Hood is a story with many different morals. Each new version has a different lesson and each character changes. Between Charles Perrault’s version of “Little Red Riding-hood” and the film “Hoodwinked,” many differences were noticed. In both stories one must look at what defines each character. But who learned what? There were twists and turns throughout both stories that were completely unexpected. Some of the reactions were out of the ballpark and nothing was quite like it seemed. The characters all learned something about themselves, the people around them, or learned from their mistakes. Little Red Riding-hood, the Wolf, and Granny all seemed like completely different characters in the two different stories. The different reactions of those characters determined varied consequences and outcomes. Looking throughout the two stories, each character learned a different lesson or faced various endings.
A young, red-hooded girl walked through the woods all alone. All of a sudden the Wolf popped out of nowhere. What was Little Red to do? Was she to trust the Wolf? That has been the conflicting turmoil in both of Red’s stories. As a gullible young girl in Charles Perrault’s “Little Red Riding Hood,” Red blindly believed the Wolf. “I am going to see my grandmother,” Red told the Wolf (Griffith and Frey 10). That naïve nature caused Red to seem young and clueless. Negative consequences arose form Red’s cluelessness, causing Red and her Granny to get hurt. The lesson learned from Little Red in that story was not to trust strangers. Throughout “Hoodwinked, Red took on a different attitude about her situation. ...errault also portrayed a very accurate display of how thoughtlessness can cause you to be the target of someone’s schemes. The film “Hoodwinked” taught that jumping to conclusions can be catastrophic as well. When one accuses an innocent person of a crime they did not commit, it causes one to be blind-sighted to what is really happening. People make mistakes and teachings are learned through them. As seen in the two versions of Little Red Riding Hood, different lessons are learned through different circumstances. When one goes through different situations, their entire character determines the outcome.

At first glance the characters Connie from “Where are you going? Where have you been?” and Little Red Riding Hood from the classic fairy tale “Little Red Riding Hood” may seem to have nothing in common. However, from the start one can compare how much they actually have in common. Though these two characters are very different they are the same in many ways. Their story, from beginning to end, is similar. It is easy to see how alike and different they are with the description of Connie and Little Red Riding Hood’s lives, the relationship with their wolves, and their tragic endings.

To compare and contrast both the story telling of little red riding hood from watching Hoodwinked film an animation comedy written by Cory Edwards, and Todd Edwards based off the tale of the re- make of the little red riding hood. These two stories are in my opinion somewhat the same and different. But when you look at the Hollywood film it has a more of a characteristic telling or showing. After reviewing the two stories I believe they both have the same message to
“I've told her and I've told her: daughter, you have to teach that child the facts of life before it's too late” (Hopkinson 1). These are the first three lines of Nalo Hopkinson's fairy tale “Riding the Red”, a modern adaptation of Charles Perrault's “Little Red Riding Hood”. Perrault provided a moral to his fairy tales, the one from this one is to prevent girls from men's nature. In Hopkinson's adaptation, the goal remains the same: through the grandmother biographic narration, the author advances a revisited but still effective moral: beware of wolfs even though they seem innocent.

Both of these stories served as mile markers in the history of children's literature, and marked turning points in our Society. For the first time, children were allowed to think freely, and learn. They independently formed their own thoughts on life, God, and many of the other highly regulated aspects of their society. Until this time most of the children were taught to think as their parents or feel the wrath of vengeful and often cruel God.
Certain elements in children’s literature make me feel nostalgic for the past when I lived a more carefree and perhaps careless lifestyle with my eyes and ears wide open. Now, a college student and adult struggling to juggle school, work, and future career planning, I often forget the simple things that brought me pleasure when I was a child. The stresses I have encountered while growing older—taking on added responsibilities and accumulating prejudices—have clouded my childlike, innocent, and fun view of life. This childishness, which was reawakened by reading Charlotte’s Web,“Goblin Market,” and The Secret Garden ,is something I’d like to bring to life again. I miss it, and I’m tired of repressing it just so I can appear to be a mature adult. There are some characteristics in me that were rooted in childhood and still survive to express themselves today, like my love for animals. But these are few. The majority of things I learned, believed, and valued as a child have escaped me and perhaps lie dormant somewhere in my subconscious. My sense of beauty and healing power in nature has diminished since I moved away from my rural childhood home, as well as my relationships with my sisters, who were more easy to get along with when I was young. I regret losing these parts of me with age, and after reading these books I wish more than ever to bring them back, because they did form who I was as a child—and everything stems from childhood. This is when I was my real self, naive at heart and innocent at play.
The fairytale Little Red Riding Hood by Charles Perrault is a story that recounts the adventure of the protagonist Little Red Riding Hood as she fulfills her mother’s wishes to bring a package to her ill grandmother. Perrault’s short story conveys influential life themes on the idea of male predation on adolescent women who fall victim to male deception. Perrault successfully portrays these themes through his use of rhetorical devices such as personifying the actions of the antagonist Wolf predator as he preys on the protagonist Little Red. Perrault illuminates the central theme of upholding sexual purity and being aware of eminent threats in society in his work. Roald Dahl’s poem, Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, is an adaptation to
“Don’t ever take candy from a stranger or get into his car” this line has been drilled into our young little brains from teachers to parents. We have grown up being told never to trust a stranger because “stranger danger” one of my favorite lines as a child. Not only was this directed to us with our parents and teachers, but the classic folktale, “Little Red Riding Hood” has been taught to young children for many years. The stories moral is not to trust strangers and do not associate with them for any reason. While reading Perrault’s version of the classic folk tale, his moral is that children, especially young girl’s, can be eaten by wolves by just talking and trusting a stranger. When people think of Robin Hood, they think of a fairy-tale character who takes part in mischievous acts with his Merry Men at his side. Although he is just a fairy-tale character, he resembles a real human who did the same things, and there is much more to know about him than the stories say. Evidence of the real Robin Hood has been searched for for years, and although it is believed that someone like him did exist, not much information is given on his real self, only his fictional posterity. Some historians suggest that he was based off of real-life outlaws such as Fulk Fitz Warin, Herewerd the Wake, and Eustace the Monk.
Literature has been part of society since pen met paper. It has recorded history, retold fables, and entertained adults for centuries. Literature intended for children, however, is a recent development. Though children’s literature is young, the texts can be separated into two categories by age. The exact splitting point is debatable, but as technology revolutionized in the mid-twentieth century is the dividing point between classic and contemporary. Today’s children’s literature is extraordinarily different from the classics that it evolved from, but yet as classic was transformed into modern, the literature kept many common features.
