Everyone’s childhood was filled with fairytales, and stories that will forever be programed into our minds even memory that continues from generation to generations. After reading, Charles Perrault, version of “Little Red Riding Hood” a story told in the 17th century of France from that time era the 17th century. The audience of Charles writing were for kings, and young women and the royal courts. The purpose of his writing is developed a seriousness of why rich noble age women should be worried about predators. The rhetorical appeals that he displayed was pathos he expressed work of art that stirs up emotions of pity for Little Red Riding, and the Grandmother. So, the audience would feel sympathy and sorrow. By using pathos appeals he made an important persuasion in arguments of different emotions. After, I read upon H.R. Trevor- Roper’s journal article who is known for studies in 17th century history and European history he written an article called The General Crisis of the 17th Century. Many characters have hopes and dreams which they wish to accomplish. Of Mice and Men has two main characters that go through obstacles to get what they want. In the beginning it is George and Lennie running away trying to get a job. Once both George and Lennie have a job they try to accomplish their dreams. Unfortunately they both can't get their dreams to come true since lennie does the worst and George has to shoot Lennie. Steinbeck uses characterization, foreshadowing, and symbol as rhetorical strategies to make George's actions justified.
In the book Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer wrote about Christopher McCandless, a nature lover in search for independence, in a mysterious and hopeful experience. Even though Krakauer tells us McCandless was going to die from the beginning, he still gave him a chance for survival. As a reader I wanted McCandless to survive. In Into the Wild, Krakauer gave McCandless a unique perspective. He was a smart and unique person that wanted to be completely free from society. Krakauer included comments from people that said McCandless was crazy, and his death was his own mistake. However, Krakauer is able to make him seem like a brave person. The connections between other hikers and himself helped in the explanation of McCandless’s rational actions. Krakauer is able to make McCandless look like a normal person, but unique from this generation. In order for Krakauer to make Christopher McCandless not look like a crazy person, but a special person, I will analyze the persuading style that Krakauer used in Into the Wild that made us believe McCandless was a regular young adult.
Prevailing Purposes in “The Crucible” Playwright and essayist, Arthur Miller, in his play, “The Crucible”, utilizes pathos, symbolism, and irony to convey his purpose of how the events of the Salem Witch Trials had detrimental effects on the society and how far the elites went to protect their reputation . Miller’s reasoning is to expand Parris’ and Danforth purpose for their side of the argument during the witch trials. As the American people’s standards and principles has evolved over time, it’s easy to forget the pain we’ve caused. Chief Red Jacket uses a variety of techniques in rhetoric in his quote to the “white men.” When he starts out by saying, “brother” he establishes a close relationship by showing respect to the white men. Moving on, the next two sentences both start out with “you say that you are…,” which shows the technique of parallelism and repetition. What he did there really pushes his point forward and makes his point, if you will, “sticky.” In the second sentence, he uses, “Great spirit,” instead of the White men's God. Atticus displayed courage in the same way by fighting for Tom Robinson although his family, friends, and neighbors constantly harassed him and his family for it. In addition, he broke out of the cage of racism that required him to favor the white person in the case by attempting to get Tom an innocent sentence while other white southern lawyers would have immediately entered a plea.

In her novel, The Lovely Bones, Alice Sebold uses the language of rhetoric to liberate Abigail from the façade of being a mother and spouse in a picture taken by her daughter, Susie. On the morning of her eleventh birthday, Susie, awake before the rest of the family, discovers her unwrapped birthday present, an instamatic camera, and finds her mother alone in the backyard. The significance of this scene is that it starts the author’s challenge of the false utopia of suburbia in the novel, particularly, the role of women in it.
This modern fairy tale contains diverse characters but none of them are as important as the grandmother. In fact, through her narration the reader gets the basic information concerning the familial context. The story revolves around a grandmother, a mother and a granddaughter, which thus sets the point of view of the story, the grandmother is the narrator therefore the reader gets her perception. Besides the domestic context, the lack of other contextual clues, such as the time or the location of the story, gives room to her story and her final purpose: teaching and, at the same time, protecting her grand-daughter from risks represented by men here symbolized by a wolf. The way this unnamed grandmother reveals her life exemplifies two properties of fairy tale as mentioned by Marina Warner in “The Old Wives' Tale”: “Fairy tales exchange knowledge [using morals] between an older [most of the time feminine] voice of experience and a younger audience” (314). “I've told her and I've told her: daughter, you have to teach that child the facts of life before it's too late” (Hopkinson 1). These are the first three lines of Nalo Hopkinson's fairy tale “Riding the Red”, a modern adaptation of Charles Perrault's “Little Red Riding Hood”. Perrault provided a moral to his fairy tales, the one from this one is to prevent girls from men's nature. In Hopkinson's adaptation, the goal remains the same: through the grandmother biographic narration, the author advances a revisited but still effective moral: beware of wolfs even though they seem innocent.
Fairy tales are under attack in the United States from both right- and left-oriented pressure groups. (Ravitch, 62-96) From the left, the charges include sexism, stereotyping, distortion, and anti-humanism. (Ravitch, 84) From the right, the charges include immorality and objections to the portrayal of violence, death, and the supernatural. In addition, some critics claim that the tales terrify their children. (Ravitch, 76). In The Language Police, Diane Ravitch claims that both groups understand the importance of putting pressure on state textbook adoption committees, and that, as a result of such pressure, most major publishers are simply dropping the tales from the textbooks they sell to schools. (77-78) Thus parents who assume, or would prefer that, their children are reading traditional fairy tales in school may find themselves mistaken.
Carter and Perrault both offer interesting insight in their short stories depicting the fairytale of Little Red Riding Hood by the symbolism of the wolf and flip in moral. In “Little Red Riding Hood”, Charles Perrault uses the wolf as both a religious symbol and a symbol for men who prey on those weaker and more naïve than themselves, usually women. The devilish wolf is sneaky and cunning and at every opportunity has “a very great mind to eat her up” in the woods, but instead makes a deal with her. The first significant difference is in the plot of Roald Dahl’s poem. Taken out completely is the Wolf encounter with Little Red Riding Hood in the woods. Instead of the Wolf cunningly getting information on the whereabouts of grandmother’s house from Little Red Riding Hood, in Dahl’s poem the “Wolf began to feel / That he would like a decent meal, / He went and knocked on Grandma’s door” (Dahl Lines 1-3). The first couple of lines in Dahl’s poem don’t begin focusing on Little Red Riding Hood the way Perrault’s short story does, but instead these lines aim the attention of the poem on the Wolf by beginning with his primary actions and feelings. Along with this absence of plot and shift in focus, Roald Dahl deviates from Perrault’s short story again during Little Red Riding Hood’s encounter with the Wolf in grandmother’s house. Roald Dahl includes the beginning dialogue of questioning between Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf that was originally present in Perrault’s work. However, as this repetition of dialogue goes on, there are significant differences in Roald Dahl’s poem. Baba says this quote while having a private conversation with Rahim Khan, which exposes important traits of Baba and Amir. The irony of Baba ranting to Rahim Khan about Amir to never be able to stand up for himself; Hassan always saves him. The irony takes its place when Amir watches Assef rape Hassan without interfering. These words shows Amir’s character flaw, cowardice, and Baba shows how significant it is to stand up for what is right. We all know that Baba is hesitant to seize recognition of Amir because Amir’s decrease of courage to stand up for himself, which leaves Amir deeply wanting Baba’s praise and approval.
This fairy tale was most likely told to children to scare them into obedience. It registered to children essentially as a warning to listen to what your parents say and not to talk to strangers. Just as Little Red Cap subjects herself and her grandmother to danger and is saved by a passing huntsman, she told herself, "As long as I live, I will never leave the path and run off into the woods by myself if mother tells me not to", promising to herself to not be as reckless in the future (Grimm). Little Red Cap also uses her past experiences to learn from her mistakes. The second time she makes a dangerous journey to her grandmother's house, she encounters a second wolf with similar motives at the first. This time, however, Little Red Cap makes a beeline straight to her grandmother’s and makes sure she to not stray from the path once. When Little Red Cap reaches her grandmother’s, she exclaims, "If we hadn't been on a public road, he would have eaten me up"(Grimm). These lessons connect with children, cautioning that the world outside their individual spaces is a dangerous place and should not be taken lightly. The stories ?Little Red Riding Hood,? by Charles Perrault, and ?Little Red Cap,? by the Brothers Grimm, are similar and different. Moreover, both stories differ from the American version. The stories have a similar moral at the end, each with a slight twist. This story, in each of its translations, is representative of a girl?s loss of innocence, her move from childhood or adolescence into adulthood. The way women are treated within each story is different. Little Red in the French version was eaten; whereas in the German version, she is rescued by the woodsman, and this further emphasizes the cultural differences.
