Sometimes reading poems and stories might get difficult. Students often have a sense that when a reading is assigned they can just skim though it and get some detail out of it. Of course some detail is going to be obtained from the book or articles, but not complete information. In a sense this is when we can tell the difference between literature and intellectual literature. Literature is for some extremely easy to understand, since all the answers appear in the story or poem. The key is being able to understand what the context of the story is. Intellectual discourse is more of analyzing what the article is about. They contain quite a difference which is very noticeable. There are four main thinking strategies that are crucial when trying to understand a reading. Those four key components are literary thinking, expository, analytical, and argumentative thinking. In these articles the authors state an idea of what they are talking about. There are numerous types of examples of intellectual discourse. In the article by the AACU “What Is a 21st Century Liberal Education?” the AACU wants to expose the reader to what is liberal education today. The AACU states “Liberal Education is an approach to learning that empowers individuals and prepares them to deal with complexity, diversity, and change. It provides students with broad knowledge of the wider world as well as in-depth study in a specific area of interest.” In this quote the reader is being exposed to what the AACU definition is of liberal education. Through our class discussions of education we came across this quote by Joseph Sobran, an American journalist and writer who spent a great amount of his career working for the National Review Magazine, "In 100 years we have gone from teaching Latin and Greek in high school to teaching Remedial English in college." When asked to critically think about the meaning of this quote I concluded that our educational standards have been lowered over the years and that students in America are not as intelligent as they once were in previous years. Fridman employs a values based premise that states that America’s insignificance towards education creates degrading phrases for the intellectual through “There is something wrong with the system of values in a society that only has derogatory terms like nerd and geek for the intellectually curious and academically serious” (P.1). He expresses that American society’s values, which degrades education, results in demeaning terms to address intelligence which is wrong since intellectuals don’t deserve to be classified negatively for their efforts in studying. In Chapter 2 of In Defense of a Liberal Education by Fareed Zakaria titled “A Brief History of Liberal Education” Zakaria does just that he begins chapter 2 giving a history lesson on the history of liberal education. From its beginning in Ancient Greece, where lessons consisted of the studying of Homeric poetry to codes, values, and physical training. In the start, the people of Greece did not like the need for this liberal education. Zakaria talks about how Plato and Isocrates both had different outlooks on what should be taught. In the essay “Hidden Intellectualism” Gerald Graff expressed his views on education. He feels that teachers or professors only see traditional subjects or text as intellectually valuable even though, although as a professor himself, he disagrees with it. He feels that the spectrum should be broadened to be able to interact with the kids more and get them more interested in the reading that are taught in schools. He is speaking to teachers in an effort to get them to change from the mindset of teaching traditionally and get reading that students to relate to. He is also speaking to students to get them to feel better about not being able to relate certain readings, and to also see that not being able to relate to the readings is not a bad thing. Although Pop Culture reading is not considered as intellectual reading it should be.
If they are taught correctly, liberal arts classes have the potential to help “students cross social boundaries in their imaginations. While this article was written extremely well and understandable it is not very effective, An effective article or essay will have a strong style, language and tone.“Hidden Intellectualism” does not have a clear or strong style mentioned in the essay. The author is clear with his point and opinion but he restates himself multiple times. He does not have a clear style of writing where the reader can collect and group their personal thoughts together. The author’s tone is also very bias and harsh towards the subject. The article states “Give me the student anytime who writes sharply argues, sociologically acute analysis of an issue of source over the students who writes a lifeless explication on Hamlet or Socrates Apology”(Graff 792). The author does not look at the other perspective of others and only focuses on his point of view. The articles detail also is not very adequate or strong,”Hidden Intellectualism” states “I offer my own adolescent experience as a case in point” (Graff 788). The author uses his personal experiences with academics to proves to us his point. Further in the article there is not enough detail or examples to help the reader understand his point of view. Lastly, the article is not effective for the reader and needs to have a clearer style, more detail and examples for others to relate
But the best argument against a liberal education is perhaps the simplest. When students go to any college, they choose a major and take classes that are related to that major. However to get to those classes they have to take courses in , reading, writing, and history. I don’t think that Zakaria realises this. By the time these students graduate, they will be able to understand all of the technical aspects of their field, as well as being able to express their thoughts and ideas clearly. When reading someone else's work you need to be certain that you read between the lines. Author's, at times, will attempt to distort information in order to make their beliefs more prominent. In order to avoid this disinformation, you have to learn the difference between denotations and connotations and facts from opinions. Furthermore, you'll have to recognize figurative language, such as similes and metaphors, which can incite specific feelings onto readers.
Christ utilizes rhetorical devices to elevate the effectiveness of the article. In the opening paragraph the use of the rhetorical questions: “If Bill Gates and Steve Jobs never earned degrees, is college really necessary? Why should taxpayers foot the bill for “pointless” departments like anthropology?”, provides the reader with an understanding of what is to be answered in the essay. The second paragraph refutes the sentiment of these questions and gives an effective response by stating, “Yet, judging the value of a liberal arts education, even with a purely economic calculus, shows it to be more relevant than ever before” (Christ, “Myth: A Liberal Arts Education is Becoming Irrelevant”). By providing a counter response to the questions, the author is clarifying her main argument. Ethos, is another integral part of proving an argument. Christ uses facts including “the Association of American Colleges and Universities shows that more than three-quarters of employers would recommend an education with this emphasis to a young person they know,” which make her point that being liberally educated will make someone more employable (Christ, “Myth: A Liberal Arts Education is Becoming Irrelevant”). Today’s education is more liberal than it has been in the past. A liberal education teaches people to think for themselves and it provides people with a broader education. The classes that are part of a liberal education are not just the general education classes, they are also electives. A liberal education teaches people to challenge what they do not believe, but a person with a more conservative education would never challenge what they were told. In challenging what they do not believe, they can further research it. In doing this it frees people from the restraints in their everyday life, and allows them to control the forces in their life.
