Why is love so immensely powerful in this developing world? What does appearance have to do with love? Why can one person be the only inspiration in someone’s life? Why do people express their love in so many different ways? These questions represent one of the vital themes in S.E Hinton’s novel, The Outsiders. One of the eminent themes of the story is that although not always apparent, love is the strongest bond. Three major examples show this idea. The first example is Dally and Darry’s appearance and their demonstration of love. The second example is Dally’s dependence on Johnny to live. The third and final example is the way Darry treats Ponyboy compared to the rest of the boys in the gang. It helps the world run smoothly and gives people hope. Dally hid his deep love for Johnny because he thought that loving someone would make him look weak since he is known for being tough and for hating the world. But Johnny is the only thing that Dally loves in this world. Johnny is his inspiration and what keeps him going every day. The same goes for Darry; he thought that he needed to appear strict so that Ponyboy and Sodapop would be successful in life but he loves both of them desperately. Love is the most potent of weapons and the most important virtue. It can defeat hate and can mend broken hearts. Every person loves and can love. It all comes down to the individual and if they want to expose it. Do you?
