Marilyn Monroe’s body lying there lifeless and barren emphasizes the demoralized tone of the poem. The poem introduces the ambulance men while describing the alarming scene of Monroe’s body. The connotation of the mourning and the mortality of women is present with how the men are described while carrying Marilyn Monroe’s body. In the poem, the details of how the ambulance men respectfully treat Marilyn Monroe’s body as if she were alive with the lines, “onto the stretcher, tried to close the / mouth, closed the eyes, tied the / arms to the sides, moved a caught / strand of hair, as if it mattered“ (562). This allows a feeling with impact of this single experience and how it is affected later. The men described as experiencing “nightmares, strange/ pains, impotence, depression” which have literal meaning in the poem that basically stating they are having bad dreams, unusual troubles, powerlessness related to probable erectile dysfunction, and misery all related to this painful experience (562). In order to completely grasp exactly how the old maid appears to the woman on the sidewalk and the love she feels for the man walking with her, Sara Teasdale uses personification to describe the characters in the poem. One would be, “Her soul was frozen in the dark/ Unwarmed forever by love’s flame.” Obviously, a person’s soul cannot be frozen, but the meaning is that the old maid had never felt a heated intensity between herself and someone special to her which could give her a cold outlook on life. Another time the poet uses personification is when the speaker states, “His eyes were magic to defy”. Eyes cannot be magic. By saying that his eyes were magic the reader can get the notion that when the speaker looks into the eyes of her lover she feels awed, happy, or even entranced. Sara Teasdale also uses a metaphor in her work, “Her body was a thing growing thin,” In that line the speaker is comparing the old maid’s draining body to something that can get thinner. The poet uses a rhyme scheme of rhyming the second with the fourth line and there are four lines in every stanza. Finally, in this narrative poem there are eight syllables per line of the poem.

He does use some near rhymes such as, “ sweaty” and “quietly” or “lesson” and “sun”. He uses an onomatopoeia in the 21st line to describe the sound of, “snap” that the cameras made.

This is the case in The Sleeper by Edgar Allan Poe, as tackles the topic of death in an uncanny way. I believe that the structure of this poem allows for the speaker to tell a narrative which further allows him to convey his point. The use of enjambment emphasizes this idea as well as provides a sense of flow throughout the entirety of a poem, giving it the look and feel of reading a story. Auden’s poem “Funeral Blues” (1003), he describes such a catastrophic event and the drastic effect that it has on his life. It is interesting how people choose to accept this permanent and expected event, death. Similarly, Emily Dickinson has written many poems about death, such as “The last Night that She lived” (843), which describes a family waiting for a woman or girl to die and the dreary and depressed mood that exists within the household. Mourning is considered a perfectly healthy reaction when someone who is deeply loved and cared about passes on, and this is illustrated in “The Memory of Elena” (1070-71) by Carolyn Forche. She writes about the events following a funeral and also flashes back to the actual moment that a wife has watched her husband die. W.H Auden’s “Funeral Blues,” Carolyn Forche’s “The Memory of Elena,” and Emily Dickinson’s “The last Night that She lived” are all poems which share death as their subject matter, but differ in the fact that they discuss death in a unique style with a variety of literary devices to make them more effective.
