The aroma throughout the room is grey and unfavorable. It’s a bad omen of things to come. The room that Gabriel compassionately watches his wife in is grim. The clothes thrown in the chair catches Gabriel's eyes, “a petticoat string dangled to the floor” while “one boot stood upright” and the other was “limp.” The choice of words that Joyce used illustrates the ill-fated event soon to occur. James Joyce uses the room imagery to revolve into Gabriel's vision of his wife’s funeral. Gabriel fantasies of sitting in the same drawing room of Aunt Kate, dressed in all black with his silk hat upon his knees. “The blinds would be drawn down” indicating a private moment filled with sorrow. Aunt Kate would interval “crying and telling Gabriel how Julia had died.” Gabriel would ponder over the words that would comfort Aunt Kate but would only find “lame and useless words.” This statement reveals that Gabriel is a somewhat detached from reality. Despite the extract being moderately brief, Joyce is able to portray Gabriel's loss. Gabriel’s loss gives the reader insight of his characteristics, he is alienated and thoughtful. Joyce used imagery, diction, and syntax to express death and desperation clearly. That being the case the narrator is omniscient hence he knows Gabriel's thoughts and feeling and his sense of loss.
In Susan Mitchell’s poem “The Dead”, the speaker describes the life of a dead person to show that those we lose aren’t truly gone. The poem starts out talking about what dead people do in their afterlife, starting to form a picture in the reader’s head. Towards the middle, she starts using personal connections and memories associated with what the dead are doing. This shows us that they will always be there to remind us of memories shared together. The writing style of Edgar Allan Poe shows the writer to be of a dark nature. In this story, he focuses on his fascination of being buried alive. He quotes, “To be buried alive is, beyond question, the most terrific of these [ghastly] extremes which has ever fallen to the lot of mere mortality.” page 58 paragraph 3. The dark nature is reflected in this quote, showing the supernatural side of Poe which is reflected in his writing and is also a characteristic of Romanticism. Poe uses much detail, as shown in this passage, “The face assumed the usual pinched and sunken outline. The lips were of the usual marble pallor. The eyes were lusterless. There was no warmth. Pulsation had ceased. For three days the body was preserved unburied, during which it had acquired a stony rigidity.” page 59 paragraph 2. The descriptive nature of this writing paints a vivid picture that intrigues the reader to use their imagination and visualize the scene presented in the text. This use of imagery ties with aspects of Romanticism because of the nature of the descriptions Poe uses. Describing the physical features of one who seems dead is a horrifying perspective as not many people thing about the aspects of death.
The study of Gabriel's character is probably one of the most important aims in James Joyce's The Dead1. What shall we think of him? Is the reader supposed to think little of Gabriel or should he/she even feel sorry for him? This insecurity already implies that the reader gets more and more aware that he/she develops ambivalent feeling towards Gabriel and that his character is presented from various perspectives. Gabriel's conduct appears to be split and seems to represent different red threads in The Dead; it leads the reader through the whole story. Those different aspects in his conduct, and also the way this multicoloured character is presented to the reader, strongly points at the assumption that he is wearing a kind of mask throughout the course of events. But at the very end, after the confession of his beloved wife, Gabriel's life is radically changed and, most importantly, his masks fall.

In his work "The Dead," James Joyce utilizes his character Michael Furey, Gretta Conroy's deceased love from her youth, as an apparent symbol of how the dead have a steadfast and continuous power over the living. The dominant power which Michael maintains over the protagonist, Gabriel Conroy, is that Gabriel is faced with the intense question of whether his wife, Gretta Conroy, loves him and whether he honestly loves her. Joyce provides substantial information to persuade one to believe that Gabriel does truly love his wife. Even though it is made evident to the reader that Gabriel possesses such devotion and adoration for Gretta, Michael diverts Gabriel's confidence in his love, causing Gabriel to come to terms with his understanding that his life is not as Gabriel once thought it to be. Through this process of misleading realization, Gabriel has allowed himself to become one of the many living dead of his community in Dublin.
