In 1935 the lands of Richmond Hill became home to the world’s second largest telescope. Jessie Donald Dunlap funded the David Dunlap observatory, DDO, in the memory of her husband Alexander Dunlap. These 189 acres of land were given as a gift to the University of Toronto. For years it has been a helping hand leading towards solar and lunar discoveries. July 2008, The University sold this to a company called Metrus. The DDO has been apart of the community for 76 years and without a doubt should be protected as a part their heritage and environment to be enjoyed by current and future generations. Not only is the observatory inscribed in Richmond Hill’s and Canada’s history, it is also an influential aspect in the environment and home to hundreds of species of animals and plant life. To take over the land and continue with development, surely the previously listed attributes will be lost.
With careful investigation of topographical aspects, Clarence Chant found the ideal land upon which the observatory would be build. Seeing it for the first time, Jessie Dunlap proclaimed “this is the place!” and 1930 the project began. This site is located on a rise in the land in the south of the city of Richmond Hill. From a young age, Chant fervently worked towards establishing this observatory and with the funding of David Alexander Dunlap, this was made possible. Up to today’s date the architectural styles of the era can still be seen and studied. The administrative building is exemplar in demonstrating beaux-arts classical architectural style. It has also been the source of many astronomical discoveries such as Supernova1987; an exploding star. The observatory was also given recognition, as it was there that the very first confirmation ...

...oronto handed over the David Dunlap land along with the telescope on it for 70 million dollars. Metrus has broken two by laws and one provincial law and has continued with the fervent removal of trees and destruction of land. 76 years ago this land was given to the public and to the university of Toronto to give students a hands-on experience working with Canada’s largest telescope. Metrus has not done anything in the favor of the residents of Richmond Hill or the environment. In their construction plans and assessments they have destroyed hundreds of habitats and put animals in a state of extreme threat. The trees the city needs to balance against light and air pollution are disappearing, and the heritage and history is being lost in this mess. The David Dunlap lands must be preserved. If the environment, heritage and animal life does not come first, what does?
These two sides of the issue bring about a major controversy in America today. Should the Pacific Northwest’s old growth forests and the welfare of the Northern Spotted Owl be sacrificed for America’s economy, and the jobs of the people in the logging industry? Which should be placed at a higher value, the forests in the Pacific Northwest and the northern spotted owl, or the American economy and the jobs and welfare of thousands and thousands of people?
The novel, A Land Remembered, is the epic saga of three generations of MacIveys. The novel begins with a flash back, from the last generation MacIvey, Sol. Sol was a real estate tycoon in Miami and the surrounding areas. He has chosen to give up his life in Miami to live his last hours in the cabin in Punta Rassa , Florida; the cabin his grandfather had built. Thus, the three generations of MacIveys in Florida ends.
The effects of deforestation around my home and throughout my state are becoming more evident every day. When a deer or other wild game loses its home, they move into cities, urban areas, and parks; thus causing issues with the human population. Most people living in Illinois have hit or nearly killed a deer driving on Southern Illinois roadways. This common occurrence could be kept at bay or maybe even avoided if the deer and wild game had more space to reside. There are many points that coincide with this reality but the main issues are the small subtle ones that affect everyday life and are often overlooked. Picture the Illinois we will leave for our children. Do you see a lush green forest or miles and miles of concrete and steel?
The proposed territory of the South Okanagan- Similkameen National Park Reserve is located in the South Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys in southern British Columbia, currently comprised of five Provincial Protected Areas. These areas include the 4700 hectare Mt. Kobau Site situated on the height of land between the Okanagan and Similkameen valleys; the 1850 hectare Chopaka East Site situated on Black Mountain, between Richter Pass and the International Boundary; the 470 hectare Chopaka West Site situated between Richter Mountain and the International Boundary; the 2350 hectare Kilpoola Site situated north and south of Highway 3 including the southeast slopes of Mount Kobau, Blue Lake and Kruger Mountain to the International Boundary; and the 25889 hectare Snowy Protected Area situated between the Lower Similkameen Indian Reserve. These areas, with the exception of Snowy Protected Area, compose the South Okanagan Grasslands Protected Area. Potential future additions of Crown and private lands would possibly see large tracts of land north and south of Mt. Kobau along with tracts north and east of the existing boundaries of Snowy Protected Area.
The sensitive instruments aboard the SOHO spacecraft have already helped scientists here on Earth discover and explain some of the mysteries of the Sun as well as to confirm some of their theories they previously held. For example, in May of 1998 with the help of the Michelson Doppler Interferometer scientists were able to see with greater clarity the giant convective cells inside and on the surface of the Sun.

Although the Canadian government has done a great deal to repair the injustices inflicted on the First Nations people of Canada, legislation is no where near where it needs to be to ensure future protection of aboriginal rights in the nation. An examination of the documents that comprise the Canadian Constitution and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms reveal that there is very little in the supreme legal documents of the nation that protect aboriginal rights. When compared with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples it is clear that the Canadian Constitution does not acknowledge numerous provisions regarding indigenous people that the UN resolution has included. The most important of these provisions is the explicit recognition of First Nations rights to their traditional lands, which have a deep societal meaning for aboriginal groups. Several issues must be discussed to understand the complex and intimate relationship all aboriginal societies have with the earth. Exploration into the effects that the absence of these rights has had the Cree of the Eastern James Bay area, will provide a more thorough understanding of the depth of the issue. Overall, the unique cultural relationship First Nations people of Canada have with Mother Earth needs to be incorporated into the documents of the Canadian Constitution to ensure the preservation and protection of Canadian First Nations cultural and heritage rights.s
4. The decision allowed the city council to postpone their vote for a week, and they suggested that the sites developer design a plan to save more of it’s trees.

The working document does not provide for protection of agricultural land. Numerous Alberta municipalities are actively supporting agriculture by various means, including protection of agricultural lands. Why are Woodlands councilors ignoring the Municipal Government Act and their own Municipal Development Plan, both requiring protection of agricultural lands? Can you please explain the county's criteria for rezoning farm land to natural resource extraction?
The conflict in the North Vancouver district is over the resource of land and how to use it. There are many stake holders involved in this conflict. The district owns the Mountain Forest and Cove Forest areas, and wanted to develop the areas in response to projected increases in future populations, taken from the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) reports. The individual residents of the district are also stake holders. As taxpaying members of the municipality they indirectly own the land. They are also stake holders from the point of view of citizens who live near the proposed development sites and use the forests for its recreation and aesthetic values. Other stake holders include the Lower Mainland residents; many of these people use the North Shore Mountains, and in particular Mountain and Cove Forests, for their outdoor recreation activities. If the land was to be developed they too would be affected.2
The first observatory in the world was built in 825 in Baghdad (Iraq). Many followed years later in cities like Istanbul (Turkey), Rayy (Iran), Samarkand (Uzbekistan)and Tabriz (Iran). But in these observatories they didn’t only research about astronomy. They worked on subjects like chemistry, physics and medicine.
Nasa’s Chandra x-ray observatory was launched on July 23, 1999, and with a length of 45 feet is the largest satellite ever launched. The observatory was first proposed to NASA in 1976, funding began in 1977, and after more than 20 years it was finally launched into space. It was previously known as the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (AXAF), but after a contest in 1998 it was renamed to Chandra after Nobel-prize winning Indian-American astrophysicist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar. “Chandra's main mission is to teach us about the Universe that we live in which has indirect benefits, e.g. by inspiring students to take an interest in math and physics, or showing people how complicated and beautiful the Universe is.”(Chandra’s official website, faq)The Chandra x-ray Science Center (CXC) can be found in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Dr. Harvey Tananbaum is the Center’s director. The flight is directed by the Science Control Center that also executes the observing plan of the observatory, and receives the scientific data. The mission planning and service operations are the responsibility of Science Support. Chandra is the most sophisticated telescope in space and is used by scientists around the world. The observatory exists of three major parts, the x-ray telescope, the science instruments and the spacecraft. The electrical power required to operate the spacecraft and the instruments is 2 kilowatt that is how much it takes to operate a hair dryer. The Chandra observatory orbits up to an altitude of approximately 139,000km that is about a third of the distance to the moon and returns it to 16,000km away from the Earth. It takes Chandra 64 hours and 18 minutes to complete an orbit that is about two and a half days. In 1992 Chandra’s orbit ...
... of architects and engineers, I have a very warm heart for buildings of this nature. I am extremely blown away by steel and glass structures so I am very pleased I got to report about this structure. I did not go inside though because I was running short on time but I do plan to go back and find a way to visit or tour the building.
