The issue of celebrity activism has long been a topic of controversy, even before the use and creation of social media. The recurring question regarding celebrity activism is whether or not celebrities should utilize their platform and fame to advocate for social change. Although many people see celebrity activism as a negative thing because of reasons such as lack of expertise and the negative outcomes outweighing the positive, I believe it is a beneficial thing. Celebrities possess a large and significant platform through which they can draw attention to overlooked issues and help elevate their importance and relevance. By acquiring these platforms and status, they have a chance at making an actual change and drawing attention to important …show more content…
Swaying the public's opinion is the only way for a change to actually be made in which celebrities hold the power to do so (Ostroff). With all the power and influence that celebrities hold, also comes the power to bring light to problems that go unnoticed due to the lack of attention given to them. Some people typically may not think twice about who is struggling to find a job or housing, but as soon as a celebrity points it out there is attention brought to it which will allow for improvement even if it is small. We see a situation like this in the “West Memphis Three” trial. This trial was going on for 18 years and was spoken about but as soon as social media became more used the popularity of this case skyrocketed due to celebrities sharing information about this case on their social media platforms. The use of celebrities and their platforms allowed for this trial to get the attention it deserved and the verdict would not have gone the way it did without the help of celebrities and their social media platforms (“West Memphis
Celebrities hold a strong power to influence the lifestyle trends of an audience. As members of the entertainment industry, celebrities are looked up to as role models by a large general public. With such high exposure, celebrities essentially hold the power to positively or negatively influence their followers, from fashion trends to behavioral tendencies, the attitudes and lifestyle habits of celebrities influence cultural qualities and the way in which many people function within society. Mindy Kaling’s career started when she became an intern on the popular show “Late Night with Conan O’ Brien”. Mindy was a 19-year-old sophomore at Dartmouth College when she first started her internship.
The Progressive Era was a period in which the federal government increased its legislation and its grasp of the nation. There were three distinct pieces of federal legislation that seem to stick out, The Meat Inspection Act The Federal Reserve Act,, and The Hepburn Act. All of this legislation gave the government an extremely large amount of power to regulate business and industry as well as the people of the United States of America.
Part of that is because some people’s perspectives of celebrities allow them think as if they’re on a pedestal and are more important than the average human. When people vision these celebrities as these quintessential people it enable’s their own thoughts and opinions on the celebrity. It’s like brainwashing, these celebrities only show the media what they want, which allows them to put up a whole façade and mask who they truly are. During the O.J Simpson trial it opened more people’s minds to visualize the concept that celebrities have the ability to be just as deranged as the average person, and that we are all equal, but the only difference that’s separates us is the fact that their job is in the lime
There are many celebrities who support and promote causes and charities to create awareness about peace, humanitarian causes, poverty, and illness in the world. Does celebrity activism really have the intention to help others or do celebrities get involved in it because they want to enhance their reputation? Although some celebrity activists do not have a good reputation because of their bad behavior, they contribute to society by giving donations or by supporting good causes. Celebrity activism matters because celebrities are powerful tools who raise awareness of good causes. Celebrities have the power to attract people’s attention, for instance, their fans, to influence them to support the important causes.
One area in which celebrities have become extremely involved is that of political campaigns. Politicians want celebrity endorsements in order to become more visible and more popular with different age groups. One survey shows that forty percent of 18 to 24 year olds were influenced by celebrities’...
In conclusion, Through researching cases of Michael Jackson, Amanda Bynes, Lindsay Lohan, Tiger Woods, Justin Bieber, and other celebrities I have found that the legal system intends to treat celebrities equal to everyone else but sometimes their status can get in the way of what is truly just. Celebrities get caught up in their own ego and believe that they are invinsible. Hopefully as some of these stars mature they will begin to realize that the their actions will be measured to the same degree to those of non-celebrity status. I hope that famous people are given a fair opportunity to participate in jury duty and other roles in our government if they so wish to.
...e an effect on our politics, its very important for a candidate running for president to have a popular celebrity endorse them as president, just like Oprah did for Obama in the 2008 election. Giving celebrities huge amounts of power over everything in our society. But what does Justin Biber know about the economy, or what does Oprah know about running a country? Thats the thing, they don’t know, and because people blindly vote on a presdient only because most the celebrities like him, is causing our political figures to care less about the everyday citizen, and work harder to please the celebrity that helped him get elected.
For example, “Pop star Justin Bieber is facing driving under the influence and other charges after authorities said he raced through a Miami Beach neighborhood in a rented Lamborghini.” Due to this he was cursed by cops as he after arrest. He also admitted to being under the influence of drugs and alcohol. After his court appearance he posted bail and was released an hour later. His foolishness did not stop there, while leaving the correctional center in front of an crowd he waved goodbye from the top of a SUV. If this was to be the case of any other person without fame there would be no bail as quickly as Justin Bieber was released. By that happening it shows us that they didn’t pay much attention to what he could have done driving that fast. It is not fair that the correctional center released him that quick due to the fact that if a normal person would have done that it would not be that easy for him to be released that quick. This proves that there needs to be a change because celebrities are getting away with many things that makes us see
The deception of media consumers allows for the abuse of economic infrastructures of society. An obsession with celebrities’ lives passifies ordinary people in accepting the stratification of the elite businesses and the ordinary citizens. Though pseudo-events and celebrity worship may not be exactly complementary, the similarities of both leaves the public to be utterly vulnerable unless they begin to critically think for themselves.
Celebrities. We all want to live like they do; we all want to experience what they do; to be accepted in a way that is purely envious. More importantly, we want all the extras that celebrities receive in life. One of those extras seems to be the beating the justice system. Beating is a strong word; I prefer to use the word whitewashing. Why is it that when a celebrity goes on trial, the public seems to be transfixed on the outcome? Does the public even know why or how the accused celebrity manages to be not guilty after not guilty after not guilty? Lets be honest, it is jury of our peers that decides our fate in the legal system. Just because you are a celebrity does not mean that you have a hall pass to a not guilty plea. Now take a step back from all I have said; the extras that I had mentioned are the advantage that celebrities have over the average citizen. Money, the media, and even the jurors and the prosecution play roles that aid the defendant. The fact is that when celebrities are on trial for serious crimes, the advantages that they have are prevalent, and our usually overshadowed by the media coverage that comes with it.
This goes to show the impact of celebrities on the public. I think it is amazing that Emma Watson is using her position to help bring awareness, especially as a woman, because women in the industry often get a lot of hate and are made fun of. Going deeper into celebrities, there are different levels of famousness amongst actors. You have A-list, B-list, C-list, and D-list celebrities. They are divided according to how many people, of different ages and
According to Epstein, a celebrity is something or someone who can be talented and full of achievements and yet wish to broadcast ones fame further through the careful cultivation of celebrity, while one can be the total opposite of achievements and be less talented and yet still be made seem otherwise through the mechanics and dynamics of celebrity creation (Epstein2). Celebrity culture today is epidemic; some might agree that it is sweeping up America in a harmful way, while one might argue that it is beneficial to our society. Over the last few decades, celebrity and fame has changed dramatically, from Alexander the Great to Kim Kardashian. Talent and achievements no longer play a huge role when it comes to celebrities. “Much modern celebrity seems the result of careful promotion or great good looks or something besides talent and achievement” (Epstein2) with that being said celebrity-creation has blossomed into an industry of its own.... ...
Celebrity Essay People have been amazed by celebrities since ancient times and have looked up to them as if they were gods. In Collin Palmer’s short essay response, he argues that Deborah King overdramatized the negative effects celebrities have on our lives in her article, The Impact Celebrities Have on Our Lives. Although some obsessions can be taken too far, I agree with Palmer’s position that celebrities offer a healthy escape from our stressful work and lives. Kids and teenagers need good role models–someone to look up to.
We are part of a generation that is obsessed with celebrity culture. Celebrities are distinctive. Media and consumers alike invented them to be a different race of super beings: flawless, divine and above all the real moral world. In a 1995 New York Times article “In contrast, 9 out of 10 of those polled could think of something
How much privacy of the individual is protected under the United States Constitution? Every one is entitled to the right of privacy, but to what extent is that privacy granted? Public figures are constantly being harassed and photographed by the media. Some photographers and reporters will go to any means, even illegal actions, to get a picture or story. However, public figures are human beings like everyone else, and the media should give them more privacy. The media needs to operate with more respect for both laws and for moral and ethical codes of conduct. There are laws establishing the privacy of an individual, and the media needs to extend these rights to public figures.
