Corporal punishment in school pertains to disciplinary actions that is physical, but mental in nature and that are enforced by teachers or even school administrators as for some kind of punishment for students who misbehave in school. I’ve seen many parents use corporal punishment on their children. Spare the rod and spoil the child” Proverbs 13:24. This quote is stating that if your child is not physically punished when they do something wrong, they will not learn from what is right from wrong. Some students would be scared to get discipline from their parents or by administrators because it will leave marks or be frightened. Many administrators or even teachers may think that it’s alright to spank their students when misbehaving. Corporal punishment may negatively affect both the parent and the child, leaving them with troubled minds. Some example of corporal punishment in school are slapping, pinching, and spanking (Frankie). African American were hit twice as much as white girls (Wallace). Boys were three times likely to be paddled than girls (Wallace). Corporal punishment can scar children or disfigure them for life, both physically and mentally (Frankie). More often than not corporal punishment involves the use of canes to beat someone (Frankie). Another big problem surrounding the use of corporal punishment within schools is the fact that it can cause severe mental anguish that may stick with the student for a long time (Pro & Cons of Corporal). It can cause a long lasting problem with authority, and an extreme dislike of schools and the education systems (Pros & Cons of Corporal). This also causes mental anguish for the person who is responsible for punishing, because they may not feel comfortable administering such a violent punishment (Pro & Cons of Corporal). Physical punishment in schools can cause serious negative side effects that come along with unintentional mental damage, physical pain and the loss of the ideal relationship between students, teachers and schools (Ji-hae). Grief, depression, and fright are sign of mental anguish. Most students who have gone through physical punishment suffer various mental problems. Simply handling a student’s problem by paddling might be quick and convenient for the teacher, but on the student’s side, permanent marks of mental anguish can be retained (Ji-hae). I have been hit with a paddle in my other schools before.
