The break down of rigid gender roles and the increase in participation of women in the workplace have granted women more choices in life. So what happens when the family and personal life is out of balance? Can it be linked to unethical behaviors at the workplace in leaders? Personal and family stresses can definitely have an effect on leadership decision and critical thinking. If leadership or employees are dealing with family and personal issues outside of work, it can be difficult to manage workplace problems in sound and effective manner. So how do family and personal issues affect leadership performance? Physiologists have referred personal and family issues to the clinical term “Family-to-work conflict (FWC)”. For centuries, women has always been dominated and controlled by men. Society has viewed women as the weaker gender and relied on men in order to survive. As time went on, things have changed, society has became more advance and so are women. During the World War II, women have increased their role in the society by replacing the men’s in the labor market and also increased their status in the society. Today, the growth of women in the work force continually to raise and so are their status. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the National Bureau of Economic Research, statistics have shown 58.1% of women were in the labor market in 2011 (USBLS) compared to employment rate during the war was 35% of women in the labor market in 1945 (Bussing-Burks). So what factors must have interested women to move from being housewife to the work force? Explanations can be derived through observations of their relationship in the household, their relative status in the society, and their rationality in decision-making.

Conflict exists in every organization as a result of incompatible needs, goals, and objectives of two people while aligning to the overall business requirements. However, women have made optimistical progress towards equality and their role in the society has been changed dramatically since the last century. Many women stepped out of their home and start to work at factories and offices. The number of working women with children has more than doubled in the past 50 years. While working conditions for women may have improved, there is a lack of appreciation for the notion that work for most women doesn't end at the door of a factory or office. Despite an increase of women's participation in the labour force, women's share of housework has hardly changed in 50 years.
The traditional view of gender roles differs where women are nurturing, home oriented and calm. On the other hand, men are seen as the opposite. Nevertheless, the modern view does not distinguish these differences because of the greater involvement of the father in the family. The differences do not lie among the genders but the perspective of the individuals in society, both genders can contribute to each other’s works regardless of what sex they fall under. The society, religious institute, and media play a greater role in shaping these gender roles.
Considering the conflict between Norm and Norma with reference to the circle of conflict, it is evident that the conflict arose due to external moods and values. The most contributing conflict driver was external moods. Norm had complaints from his wife due to him getting home late and not devoting his time to their marriage. It forced Norm to request his boss, Norma to make his work schedule flexible so as to enable him work from home at a time. Due to need of results by Norma she could not allow Norm to commute from home as she considered him one of her best performing staff hence needed his full input so as to achieve the newly initiated project (West Brooks Stevens, 2009).
The first significant cause of recent rise in the rates of divorce is that women completely change in roles. In the past, men have to earn whole money to afford the expense of family, whereas woman only do housework, hence women have no money leading to depend on husbands’ money. Because of these situations, it is too difficult for most women to separate from their husbands. Nonetheless, these situations entirely change nowadays. The equality between men and women in roles are very clear at the moment, thus women can work outside to earn money, while men share the household tasks such as cooking, cleaning, washing as well as caring for children. It can be clearly seen that women are independent from money as they can earn money by themselves to support their living cost. Accordingly, the divorce rates recently rise.
