“They were satisfied with their lives”(93). This quote from the book, The Giver, demonstrates how Jonas’ community is a utopia. Jonas’ society is as perfect as a society can get. The community is excellent and ideal since everyone is satisfied with their lives. They have equality, safety, as well as an abundance of every essential material, therefore it is a utopia.
The community in which The Giver takes place, the people are treated as equal. Before the society was created, the founders created a way to have people be the same color with the purpose to stop racism. Nevertheless, the people still had characteristics that made them unique. Lois Lowry, the author, indicates this in an excerpt from a speech by the Chief Elder to the Twelves: “Today we honor your differences”(49). This excerpt illustrates that everyone is treated equally and that their differences are an honor. The citizens have jobs that are as equally valuable, and families where people are taken care of. In this short fragment from one of Jonas’ thoughts equality is shown. “It didn't worry him. How could someone not fit in? The community was so meticulously ordered, the choices so carefully made”(47). The citizens are treated fair, no one is treated lesser than others. They are also protected from terrible situations and mistakes. The people are very prosperous, for this reason, they do not have to worry about not having enough essential supplies. Therefore, that is why Jonas’ community is an excellent and a magnificent utopia society. Even though The Giver’s community is perfect, there might be other communities that try as hard as they can to make theirs a utopia
