In the book, The Giver, by Lois Lowry, there is contrast to be seen by Jonas, who is seeing colors, whereas, everyone else is not, and that is reflecting on a theme of seeing. Jonas has been seeing colors and realizing that he does not like the idea of Sameness and everyone not seeing color. “ ‘You’re beginning to see the color red’’ (94). This is when Jonas first sees the color red and is learning what a color is and how it used to be used. The Giver has to explain what colors are to Jonas, and Jonas starts wondering why everyone is not able to see such beauty. “ ‘ The red was so beautiful… ‘Why can't everyone see them?’ ” (95). Since Jonas is seeing things that other people are blind to, he sees the world in a whole new perspective. He realizes
that his society has lost something so important. The theme that this contrast is showing is seeing things that everyone else is not seeing, taking a new perspective on the world. Jonas has also seen colors of people and things around him and have wondered what was happening. “ ‘Your friend Fiona has red hair… It was the clue that told me you were probably beginning to see the color red’ ” (94). Jonas does not know how to describe what he was seeing, “ ‘ I wish language were more precise’ ” (95)! Since Jonas did not have anyone to tell him about this experience, he did not how to express the way he felt about colors. To conclude, Jonas has been seeing color, unlike the rest of his society which is contrasting him from the rest of his world, which relates to the theme of seeing things differently. Jonas questions why his people wanted Sameness when difference is so incredible. These things relate because since Jonas is starting to see colors, he is able to view his society from a different perspective from everyone else, and he realizes that his world is missing out on something so beautiful and important to seeing the world.

Memories help us understand there are consequences to your actions. Although some readers may believe that memories are not important. The novel, The Color of Water follows the author and narrator James McBride and his mother Ruth’s life, through their childhood—when they were both embarrassed about their mother—through the part of their lives where they began to accept themself for who they are and became proud of it. Moreover, this memoir is quite distinctive as McBride cleverly parallels his story to his mother, Ruth’s story by using dual narration which further helps to contribute to the theme of self-identity. Throughout the novel, McBride searches for identity and a sense of self that derives from his multiracial family and through the use of two different narrations, McBride slowly establishes his identity. Plus by integrating both narratives at the end, McBride also shows that although both narrators at the beginning had different upbringing, in the end they come together and understand each other’s perspective.
PTSD, also known as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, can cause change and bring about pain and stress in many different forms to the families of the victims of PTSD. These changes can be immense and sometimes unbearable. PTSD relates to the characters relationship as a whole after Henry returns from the army and it caused Henry and Lyman’s relationship to crumble. The Red Convertible that was bought in the story is a symbol of their brotherhood. The color red has many different meanings within the story that relates to their relationship.
In the Red Convertible by Louise Erdrich, the main character Henry loses his hold on reality. The story takes place in North Dakota on an Indian Reservation where Henry lives with his brother Lyman. Henry and Lyman buy a Red Convertible that later in the story illustrates Henry’s lack of ability to stay sane. The brothers take a summer trip across the United States in the car. When they return, Henry is called to join the army, which turns out to be the transitional point in Henry and Lyman’s personal life. The Vietnam War changed Henry’s appearance, psyche, and his feelings about the Red Convertible.
When reading we often harness particular threads of thought or lenses of critique to gain entry into the implied historic or legendary nature of literature. To accurately process a tale in the light in which it is presented, one must consider the text from multiple viewpoints. Taking into consideration the psychological circumstances of the presenter/author/narrator, we can get a view into how our personal experiences can create bias in interpretation. By placing the elements of the story into the web of relationships used to interpret the external world, we bring a view of the text from the external perspective. All of these factors are at play in the relations between the perspective within a text, creating a form of reality with its own historic and mythic properties. Characters have their own histories and structures, expressed or not, and their perception in the fictional world they reside exerts influence outward to the reader of literature. This influence can create a sense of immersive reality that renders the reading experience to be mythic truth, based in facts but not emotion or direct perception, a somewhat distanced portrayal of events. However it can also be an expression of perceptive truth, events are experienced much they would be in real life – confusing and disjointed. To look into these problems of perspective, I will use examples from “The Red Convertible” by Lois Erdrich to demonstrate how Lyman’s narration style is representative of psychoanalytic concepts, showing how he deals with the situations presented in his life.
The beginning of the story is a preview to the night Henry died. “We owned it together until his boots filled with water on a windy night and he bought out my share. Lyman walks everywhere he goes” (1882). Since Lyman now walks everywhere that means that he no longer has the car. The car was very symbolic to the story, it even gave the brothers a bond. They went everywhere together in that red convertible. They bonded by the trips they took over the states. The car was Henry’s message to Lyman, the message was to let go. Henry wanted Lyman to have the car before Henry killed himself.
In “How it feels to be colored me” Zora Neale Hurston begins recanting her life in Eatonville, Florida. This little town was a black community and the only white people who ventured in to Eatonville were tourist either coming from or heading to Orlando which was just south of Zora’s home town, Eatonville. The town never gave much attention to the southerners never stopping from chewing sugar cane as they pasted but the Northerners who came through were a different breed. In Eatonville the timid would peer behind curtains, those more venturesome would come on to the porch and watch them past with equal amount of pleasure as the tourist got from surveying the village. Young Hurston was more venturesome then most and rather enjoyed the interaction she had with the occasional visitors. She would sit atop the gate-post as she describes it being her favorite place to sit. It was a “proscenium box for a born first-nighter” the equivalent of a podium on top a stage. She had no fear in letting the tourist she calls “actors” into knowing she liked the show. She would interact with them beginning with waves eventually giving “Speak pieces” the visitors. If a family member happened to come outside in midst conversation she would have to rudely break it off. This is such a reverse from my experiences growing up in the 90s. As a child I was told not to talk to strangers and taught the universal teaching of “Stranger Danger”. Cruelty is a real and evident part of society, apparent in everyday workings. In the way that harsh racial slurs are flung from mouths of ignorant anger to the way the last meal is granted to a prisoner on death row. These cruelties are unique in their own way, but each of them stemmed from a kindness. The ignorance granted with the anger, and the picking of their own food are kindnesses that lead to a cruel event. Cruelty comes and flourishes in kindness, while kindness can create and feed cruelty. The sincere awareness of colors is not only forgotten, but dismissed into mere memories, and consigned into oblivion. Jonas, after gaining the awareness of colors, comes to the conclusion of wanting the choices that he could make in his daily routine. “I want to decide things! A blue tunic, or a red one?” (97). After The Giver asks Jonas why it is not fair that nothing has color, Jonas realizes that, for him, color is not just an nature. It also represents a level of individual freedom and choice that he has never known in his rigidly controlled society. This forces Jonas to face the disadvantages of living in such a community where self-expression is stifled.
