In the play, “ The Color Purple” by Alice Walker there are various roles played by women with some stronger than others. There are strong roles such as Sophia and Nettie, weaker ones such as Celie. Sophia was a strong character from the beginning having to deal with being the only female in a male house she always steed up for herself. Nettie was another strong character throughout the play, during the start she told Celie that she would write to her no matter what. that nothing not even Albert could stop her from writing to Celie except death.
Celie from the start was one of the weaker characters being given to Albert for marriage she was always obedient and a push over.

From a young child Celie was abused by her biological father Alfonso and was forced to have two children by him and never tell her mother about it. She was then married off to Mr. ( Albert) who treated her as nothing when he came to ask for Netties marriage. She was stripped from Nettie to keep her docile and weak and …show more content…

She always told Celie to stand up for herself and not be a pushover. Nettie being strong and all was still vulnerable due to her age and her being a young girl in that time. Celie saved her from being married off by taking her spot but she was not able to escape forever. She came to stay with Celie she was forced to endure the hunger of Alberts temptations. Celie again tried to stray Alberts attention away from her but this time resulting in Albert throwing her out of the house and breaking her away from Celie. Again unlike Celie Nettie was strong during these times saying that,” nothing will keep me from it. ”Meaning nothing can keep her from passionately writing to her sister no matter the costs. She persistently wrote to Celie even though he efforts were futile due to Albert’s control over the mailbox. Her strength carried over to later in the book when she was brave enough to be marked in
