The Civil Rights Movement was one of the most defining and revolutionary times in our country. It was a movement of change, it was built off of the struggle of African Americans 100 years after the Emancipation Proclamation. African Americans in the South were still being treated unequally to white Americans at that time. They found themselves in a world of unfair treatment, disenfranchisement, segregation and other various forms of oppression. With this in mind, assuming the role of a high school teacher comes with great responsibility to educate my students about one of the most disgraceful times in our nation’s history. I will teach my students the power of not giving up on what they believe in. In this book “The Warriors Don’t Cry”, we are told not to be afraid and resist the norm; if something is not right we need fight it and make it better. Melba and the other members of the Little Rock Nine was able to bring about change, they were able to shift the power of one group of people over to another through resistance. Resistance doesn’t have to be violent, it can be peaceful. Melba’s Grandma India teaches us all that you can get a lot of things done with just passive resistance. The struggle for racial equality was not just a physical conflict; what I learned from this book is the fact that in addition to the physical abuse, the far damaging abuse was mental. I learned through Melba’s character in the book that many of her external conflicts turned into internal ones. From all of the violence African Americans experience, they had to live their whole lives watching over their shoulders, always thinking someone is going to hurt them. Another perspective I got from this book is that if more black people had stood up, the change we want will be achieved so much faster, even though we suffer from a system that was meant to keep us down. Without realizing it, we help keep the system going by being afraid to fight it. What I found interesting was the fact that white people were afraid blacks would one day fight back, meanwhile blacks were so afraid to stand up over their lives. “The Warrior’s Don’t Cry” was a good book to read and I learned a lot from it about the pain and struggle of black
During the 1950s, African Americans struggled against racial segregation, trying to break down the race barrier. Fifteen year old Melba Patillo Beals was an ordinary girl, until she’s chosen with eight other students to integrate Central High in Little Rock, Arkansas. They are named the Little Rock and fight through the school year, while students and segregationists are threatening and harassing them. Warriors Don’t Cry—a memoir of Beals’ personal experience—should be taught in schools because it teaches students to treat each other equally and to be brave, while it also shows the struggle of being an African-American in the 1950s. Another lesson taught in the retelling is that everyone can make a change.
The Civil Rights Movement was an act in the 1950’s and 1960’s in which African Americans tried to achieve civil rights equal to whites. During this time, there was definite tension; African Americans were nonviolently protesting for their rights. In the movie Remember the Titans, The Civil Rights Movement ties in because of bussing black and white neighbourhoods together, also causing the football team, The Titans to come together. The linebacker on the team, Gerry Bertier represents a good and fair captain in these feuding times, for he accepted the African Americans deeply after some bonding exercises. The essay will persuade the reader that Gerry Bertier was a good and fair captain because (1) he didn’t tolerate others not treating African Americans on the team well, (2) he shows leadership and responsibility throughout the team, (3) and he stayed motivated.
Through every single obstacle a person went through no one gave up. Colored people did not lose hope in becoming equal to white people because they knew they were capable. What the author was trying to prove was exactly that. Although blacks were slaves and were always belittled by white they proved to be more than what the whites thought they were capable of. They stood up for themselves and they did it in several events that occurred in the book. For example, in the chapter a black teenager, James Crawford, was not slightly intimidated by a deputy registrar that attempted to sound intimidating. In the conversation the registrar made some menacing remarks to this young African American teenager saying he would put a bullet through the teenagers head. Not afraid at all, Crawford valiantly told him if it happened he would be dead, but people would come from all over the world. This young man was not afraid to stand up for himself and was not going to tolerate it in any way. Malcolm X was another inspiration to African Americans for the way he stood up for them. He had a strong connection with the people who were influenced by him. In late 1964, Malcolm X told a group of black students from Mississippi, “You’ll get freedom by letting your enemy know that you’ll do anything to get your freedom; then you’ll get it” (Zinn 461). Nevertheless, it was quite interesting and very informative regarding the many trials the African slaves had to face in order to obtain their rights. I had always known that slaves were treated horribly, but I had never heard anything of them trying to revolt. I was very fascinated how these slaves rebel against their masters in so many creative ways. Like I mentioned before, I was taught that slaves had a very rough life but my educator never talked about how these people revolted for their rights. They burned down entire field land as to slow down the production of the plantation, thus giving them some time to “rest.” The managed to break or hide working tools to slow the working process and even made their own poison as to poison their master’s food. The white master took these slaves for granted, thinking that they were dumb, but on the contrary, these slaves were far from dumb. If these slaves hardly ever revolt was because of the fear the masters had imposed upon them, with the harsh punishment of the whipping. That was the hard part of reading such literacy piece and the fact that they were taken away from their naïve home and loved ones. The whites showed up all of a sudden and just took them away with them, destroying family after family. I am mother of two young children and honestly I don’t know what I would do if something like that would ever happen to me. I can only imagine the horrible pain they must have went through knowing that they will no longer see their families. I can understand why the community grew so close to one another, because if I had my son in a different plantation than mine, I would have been at least a bit at ease knowing that he is been looked after. Having read this piece by Zinn made me realized that African slaves during the plantation period are one of the most inspiring people I have ever read
Melba began her story with her childhood in Little Rock, Arkansas. She lived with her mother, grandma, and brother in a strict and religious household. Her family had come to accept the fact that they would always be mistreated because of their color. In the South this mistreatment of blacks was seen as perfectly normal, but Melba saw things a little differently. As a young girl, she experienced first hand how awful it was to be segregated against and be constantly ridiculed simply because of her color. Unlike most people, though, she wanted to do something about it and prayed for an opportunity that would allow her to fight back and hopefully make a difference.

The civil rights movement in the 1950’s and 60’s was a monumental event in American history. The large amount of legislation passed in accordance with this movement was greatly outnumbered by the many horrendously, violent acts that occurred throughout it. Judicial decisions such as Brown v. Board of Education in 1954 should have been able to inspire hope within black communities. Yet the brutality of events such as the murder of Emmett Till and Medgar Evens, as well as staunch, white resistance like the Southern Manifesto, kept many African Americans desire for freedom repressed by their desire for safety. The civil rights movement was opposed with some of the most unrelenting resistance in the state of Mississippi. Organizations tackling integration in Mississippi were met with unyielding violence and discrimination, by both citizens and local officials. “…going into Mississippi to organize was not like going to any other state in the South. Mississippi was the heart and soul of segregation. It resisted integration more fiercely than any of the other southern states.”

But with the help of great leaders and organizations in the civil rights movement, help brake the pattern of African Americans being discriminated against and being segregated. Martin Luther King Jr. And Maya Angelou were great leaders who had a huge impact on the civil rights movement; even though Dr. King was in the field marching and protesting to fight against segregation and Angelou wrote poetry to inspire the movement and people aware of segregation, they both helped put an end to segregation here in America (American civil rights movement).
The legacy of the Civil Rights movement is long and brutal one, with roots that stem back to the boats that brought black slave to the New World. Activists, looking for change, were beaten and murdered on trains and buses, it was unsafe for them to walk the streets or go to church, and schools and homes were bombed and burned to the ground. They filled the jails, and forced to endure acts of violence, intimidation, and harassment (Litwack).
A lot of the actions that were taken upon the early 1900’s led to the Civil rights movement. Today in our generation, I believe we can educate young people of the history of rights denied to African-Americans. A way of doing that Is bringing up the topic of our history and what people went through so that we can have a better life in todays’ time.
The civil rights movement in the 1950s-1960s was a struggle for social justice for African Americans to gain equal rights. One activist who became the most recognizable spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement was Martin Luther King Jr, a christian man dedicated to the ideas of nonviolence and civil disobedience. Struggles come in all shapes and sizes; it identifies the strength of a person. Josh Ellis stated “Lamar seemed to [imply] that some of the responsibility for preventing killings…lay with black people themselves” as he speaks from personal experience after being in a gang (Eells 44). The white supremacy has struggled to keep restrictions on African Americans since the Jim Crow laws; they suppress by keeping them weak minded and killing them off. This may be considered a weak tactic, but it is no different than the “mistakes” of African American killing each other. But it does not take that experience to know that African Americans contribute to their own crisis. They are responsible for their own actions, which mostly result in revenge; not realizing that this do not make them equal, it just adds to the sad news of America. This country is based on wrong doings and consequences leaving the minority leaders to try and make a difference for generations to come. “But… I’m no mortal man, maybe I’m just another nigga” entering into the society where only judgement prevail to the cycle of life (Poem 1 22). Historically, the Civil Rights Movement was a time during the 1950’s and 60’s to eliminate segregation and gain equal rights. Looking back on all the events, and dynamic figures it produced, this description is very vague. In order to fully understand the Civil Rights Movement, you have to go back to its origin. Most people believe that Rosa Parks began the whole civil rights movement. She did in fact propel the Civil Rights Movement to unprecedented heights but, its origin began in 1954 with Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka. Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka was the cornerstone for change in American History as a whole. Even before our nation birthed the controversial ruling on May 17, 1954 that stated separate educational facilities were inherently unequal, there was Plessy vs. Ferguson in 1896 that argued by declaring that state laws establish separate public schools for black and white students denied black children equal educational opportunities. Some may argue that Plessy vs. Ferguson is in fact backdrop for the Civil Rights Movement, but I disagree. Plessy vs. Ferguson was ahead of it’s time so to speak. “Separate but equal” thinking remained the body of teachings in America until it was later reputed by Brown vs. Board of Education. In 1955 when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat, and prompted The Montgomery Bus Boycott led by one of the most pivotal leaders of the American Civil Rights Movement, Martin Luther King Jr. After the gruesome death of Emmett Till in 1955 in which the main suspects were acquitted of beating, shooting, and throwing the fourteen year old African American boy in the Tallahatchie River, for “whistling at a white woman”, this country was well overdo for change.
As more and more African American students were admitted into white Southern schools, segregationists continued to retaliate and defend their schools against them. No matter how difficult the situation turned out for some of them, and without much help from the government, African Americans did everything they possibly could to protect their educational rights for the sake of their future and success, and in the hope of promoting equality for all African American people in the United States. These students became the symbol of freedom and opened up the window of opportunity for all black people, for their ancestors, and for the future generations to come.
