On one of her outings she sees a boy who she vainly chooses to ignore. Later he shows up at her house posing as her friend, calling himself Arnold Friend, and talking to her as though he is another boy she flirts with down at the diner and pretending to be her age. Connie is the main character in this story who teaches us that sometimes we might search for adult independence too early before we are actually ready to be independent and on our own. Connie is so focused on her appearance that she works hard to create a mature and attractive adult persona that will get her attention from guys. This search for independence conflicts with Connie’s relationship with her family and their protection of her. Connie’s insecurity and low self-esteem is triggered by her fear of intimacy. Connie confuses having the attention of men with actually having them pursue her in a sexual way.
Connie is only concerned about her physical appearance. She can be described as being narcissistic because "she had a quick, nervous giggling habit of craning her neck to glance into mirror or checking other people's faces to make sure her own was all right" (Oates 148). Connie wants her life to be different from everyone else's in her family. She thinks because she is prettier, she is entitled to much more. She wants to live the "perfect life" in which she finds the right boy, marries him, and lives happily ever after. This expectation is nothing less than impossible because she has not experienced love or anything like it. She has only been subjected to a fantasy world where everything is seemingly perfect. This is illustrated in the story when Connie is thinking about her previous encounters with boys: "Connie sat with her eyes closed in the sun, dreaming and dazed with the warmth about her as if this were a kind of love, the caresses of love, and her mind slipped over onto thoughts of the boy she had been with the night before and how nice he had been, how gentle, the way it was in movies and promised in songs" (151).
Connie has the need to be viewed as older and as more mature than she really is, all the while still displaying childlike behavior. She shows this childlike behavior by “craning her neck to glance in mirrors [and] checking other people’s faces to make sure her own was all right” (Oates 323). This shows that Connie is very insecure and needs other people’s approval. Although on one side she is very childish, on the other side she has a strong desire to be treated like an adult. This longing for adulthood is part of her coming of age, and is demonstrated by her going out to “bright-lit, fly-infested restaurant[s]” and meeting boys, staying out with those boys for three hours at a time, and lying to her parents about where she has been and who she has been with (Oates 325, 326). “Everything about her ha[s] two sides to it, one for home and one for anywhere that was not home” (Oates 324). He wants her to get into his car and ride with him, but in reality, he will rape and kill her. In order for Arnold to lure Connie into his car, he manipulates her by his language. Arnold smoothly states her house “is nothing but a cardboard box I can knock down at any time” to convince her that she is not safe. Later Arnold threatens Connie saying, “Soon as you touch the phone I don’t need to keep my promise and can come inside. You won’t want that”, manipulating her thoughts in order to guarantee she will not call the police. Overwhelmed with fear, not for her own life, but for the life of her family, Connie emotionally understands that the only way to save her family is to leave with Arnold. As she travels to the screen door, Arnold continues manipulating her thoughts by encouraging her, “That’s a good girl. Now you come outside” in an almost hypnotizing manner. As soon as Connie steps out of her now unfamiliar house, she is no longer herself, nor does she own herself; she is one hundred percent overpowered by Arnold. The dominating Arnold Friend, reaches his goal of getting possession of Connie by taking control of her weak, young mind. Oates modeled Arnold after “the serial killer Charles Schmid, who, like the story's villain, was an older man who preyed on adolescent girls” using the same dominate scheme. Although some readers understand this story as Connie getting a well-deserved punishment for her actions and behavior with boys, they are not correct. For instance, those critics cannot use text to support the claim they made and they do not consider the young and inexperienced teenager that cannot weigh consequences before acting.
