The Character of Rita in Educating Rita
In the play of Educating Rita, which is written by Willy Russell,
there is a student aged twenty-six years old who is a hairdresser and
also is a working class called Rita. Rita lives with her husband
called Denny however Rita and Denny love each other so very much.
Denny wants Rita to have a baby but Rita is on a pill to stop from
having a baby, but Denny does not know about it, but then finds out
later in the play. Rita wants to explore herself and learn, that is
why she goes to University to find a tutor to help her learn.
Willy Russell faced some problems when trying to introduce the play.
He had to introduce 2 main characters, Rita and Frank. He introduced
Rita as being really active and ambitious. It shows clearly when Rita
enters Frank's room by saying "I'm comin' in, aren't I? It's that
stupid bleedin' handle on the door?" this clearly shows the audience
that Rita can be pushy and also bossy. I think that this gives the
audience some thought of what Rita might be like in the rest of the
play.
Willy Russell also introduced Frank, his second main character. Frank
is a teacher at a University and also a lecturer. In the first scene
Willy Russell introduced to the audience that frank is not open and
never gets something done when he wants it to be done on most
occasions and it shows that he can be lazy. It shows clearly when Rita
struggles to come into Frank's room because the door handle is stuck
and she cannot get in, but then pushes harder and she finally gets in.
Rita says, "You wanna get it fixed!" to frank but then Frank startles
a bit and answers, "yes, I suppose I always mean to…" This proves to
the audience that franks is always stuck in his roo...

outside Frank's room. When Frank opens the door he is surprised at
what Rita is doing and he did not expect it to be done.
In conclusion I think Willy Russell made an effective way of starting
the play because he had problems while trying to introduce the play,
but for all the problems he had devices to support him and back up his
ideas and also help him make his play. Willy Russell introduced the
characters Rita and Frank by showing the audience what they are like
and what they will be throughout the play. Willy Russell introduced
the themes to the audience in an effective way too, he showed the
audience that Rita wants Education and choices and that Frank wants
relationship. Willy Russell makes the first scene dramatic and
entertaining to the audience, which makes them stay to the very end
and I also think that he made a good start to the play.
Life has been tough for the teenagers on the street, they all find out about the struggles of living in these cold hard streets. Barbara Haworth-Attard shows us life on the streets of the four main characters in her book theories of relativity. Living on the streets is tough, and these four kids found out the hard way. Most of them will be stuck on the streets forever such as amber, twitch, and Jenna, but Dylan might be able to make it out

Amy Tan’s novel, The Joy Luck Club uses much characterization. Each character is portrayed in different yet similar ways. When she was raised, she would do whatever she could to please other people. She even “gave up her life for her parents promise” (49), I the story The Red Candle we get to see how Tan portrays Lindo Jong and how she is brought to life.
Chapter 1 of The Power of Guidance talks about the theory that teachers must be patient. In Nancy Webber 's article “Guidance or Punishment” she addresses the behavior of a student, Ryan, and questions if having more patience will help his teacher in helping him learn. She goes on to explain why she is uncomfortable with correlating this term with teaching due to the context of it being used in unpleasant situations (2). Rather, she believes that she has little patience because of her passion to teach. In her opinion, a person whom dislikes teaching and working with children has more patience. Instead, she defines this behavior as a part of development and believes that teachers should accept that aspect of their jobs. It is this key understanding that separates a good teacher from a poor one. If a teacher wants to help their student, they need to be willing to help them to find ways to appropriately display their emotions, rather than tollerate their behaviors and use patience to control the situation.

In the short story, “The Story of an Hour,” author Kate Chopin presents the character of Mrs. Louis Mallard. She is an unhappy woman trapped in her discontented marriage. Unable to assert herself or extricate herself from the relationship, she endures it. The news of the presumed death of her husband comes as a great relief to her, and for a brief moment she experiences the joys of a liberated life from the repressed relationship with her husband. The relief, however, is short lived. The shock of seeing him alive is too much for her bear and she dies. The meaning of life and death take on opposite meaning for Mrs. Mallard in her marriage because she lacked the courage to stand up for herself.

Last but not least, in discussing WWI individual major contributors you have to mention Francis Pegahmagbow or better known as “Peggy” by his fellow soldiers. He was arguably one of the most decorated soldiers in the entire war. Life wasn’t easy for this Ojibwa soldier though, as he had to overcome fierce adversity throughout his life from his childhood, to fighting in WWI. Peggy was an Ojibwa, part of the First Nations group in Canada. He was born in 1889 on the Parry Island Indian Reserve, near Parry Sound, Ontario. He experienced hardships early on in his life, as when he was just 3 his father died and his mother abandoned him. Luckily for Peggy he was taken care by elder Noah Nebimanyquod who also raised his orphaned father. Nebimanyquod
provided him with some discomfort from a sore throat and nose. Although he did not strive to live in these conditions, he definitely took advantage of his situation used it to make himself stronger as a person.
Education provides unique experiences to everyone. These experiences are not depended on the individual’s personal backgrounds or social statuses. According to Jane Thompson, a scholar in education, the process of education can either be a restriction on creativity or a “practice of freedom.” In Willy Russell’s Educating Rita, the protagonist’s experience through the Open University is a practice of freedom as she is provided with the opportunities to express her thoughts and discover her own limits. There is an internal struggle within Rita as the new environment threatens to erase her past life. Rita is able to maintain her practice of freedom through the help of Frank, whom provides her with a welcoming and encouraging learning environment.
When she comes home from work she shuts all the drapes and sits in the dark drinking. She wants badly to terminate the pregnancy. At work she inquires with a doctor about receiving an abortion. His direct response is of shame. He resents her for even asking him. She is desperate and pleas for his help. His response is, “you put yourself in this situation”. In extreme desperation she returns home that night and takes an abundance of migraine pills. It only results were vomiting.
