It’s no secret that obesity is a huge issue worldwide; over three hundred million people are clinically obese on the earth. People of both genders, every race, and all ages are prone to obesity, yet the fault for obesity is not solely each individual's responsibility. In our society, obesity is killing people, and not simply due to the health problems associated with the disorder. Changes must be made to our obesogenic environment to fight the obesity epidemic.
Obesity is an issue of the old, middle-aged, and youth. More than one-third of adults are considered overweight, more than two-thirds of adults are considered to be overweight or have obesity, more than one-third are considered to have obesity, about one-thirteenth of adults have extreme obesity, about one-six of children and adolescents ages 2 to 19 are considered to be obese.

Although food labels are meant to make comparing different foods easier, they often stump hasty shoppers. The ingredients listed are not always common knowledge and the differences in the nutrition facts from box to box are misinterpreted due to the different serving sizes. Each individual tries looking for numbers that appear less, especially in terms of calories, when trying to lose weight. However, calories are not always the primary cause to consider. Too much sugar will overload the liver, build up fat, and grow just as addictive as alcohol or drugs. Too much sodium will cause dehydration and high blood pressure. Too much cholesterol increases your chances of a heart attack or even a stroke which can lead to
death. We try to take the initiative and research what each of those percentages of ingredients mean but manufactures manipulate their advertising. It’s their payday to trick us into thinking we are buying something healthier, and when we fall for them we end up with the health problems that can kill us. The adults of our country should know better, alas children do not. Imagine having to watch an exhausted mother tell her child that he can’t have the cookies with the Mona Lisa on the box. The muscles in his checks tremble as his eyes swell with tears, and he drops to the ground, hammering his feet on the floor and flinging his arms. His mother’s crouches beside him, dominated by a profound sadness and attempts to explain how the cookies are not good for him. Today, the majority of schools do not offer nutrition education as a curriculum, so teachers are responsible for their own lessons on healthy eating. Otherwise, it’s considered a role for parents to teach their children. Except, when school districts coordinate nutrition education efforts, it presents a more focused message to students. What’s more, being a high schooler, I volunteer in helping with children events from school festivals to the town’s farmers’ market, and I have seen that students are growing less active. I have seen that students would rather sit aside and play video games while snacking. I have seen children that get bullied because they are overweight. Unfortunately, we blame parents for their children’s weight gain and not feeding their children proper meals, but how are parents meant to buy healthier foods when the costs are out of their budgets? Can we blame families who struggle to support their families and have to buy the cheaper alternative in fast food? Fast food restaurants exaggerate their portions and their prices of larger sizes generally appear cheaper relative to smaller sizes, and any other healthier choice. Just the other day, I decided to have Popeyes and the large fries was spilling out of the box that is used to fit the family meal order.

Once considered a problem for wealthier counties, overweight and obesity are now dramatically increasing in low and middle income countries (WHO, 2011). In American, the rates of obesity continue to soar. CDC (2009) recognizes obesity as a risk factor for diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and other health problems. According to NHANES over two-thirds of the US are overweight or obese, and over one-third are obese (CDC, 2009). Treatment for this illness varies; it may include the incorporation of diet, exercise, behavior modification, medication, and surgery. Since there is no single cause of all overweight and obesity, there is no single way to prevent or treat overweight and obesity that will help everyone (CDC, 2009).
Obesity is a huge problem that needs to be resolved because it affects all people, unlike most issues. People of every gender, every age, and every race are at risk of being obese. Obesity rates in America have nearly doubled within the last twenty years. Something must be done not only to prevent obesity rates continuous rising, but also to dramatically increase the percentage of obese people in America altogether.
Obesity in the United States continues growing alarmingly. Approximately 66 % of adults and 33 % of children and teenagers in the US are overweight. Obesity is the result of fat accumulated over time due to the lack of a balanced diet and exercise. The obesity epidemic and our nation’s health as a whole have many factors that include socioeconomic status in particular. Socioeconomic Status and Childhood Obesity will always shape our nations vision and mission with what we do with healthcare. Healthcare in America is in a major reconstruction faze, and is in much need of it, obesity and socioeconomic status are going to be the major contributors to this reconstruction.

Since the 1960?s obesity in America has more than tripled regardless of sex or race. Today 30.5 percent, or 69 million, American Adults are considered obese (?AOA Fact Sheets? np). In addition, 13 percent of children aged 6-11 years old are considered overweight, and well on their way to becoming obese. Obesity causes over 300,000 deaths a year and costs the country $117 billion dollars, prompting health care providers and the government to label it an epidemic (?Overweight and Obesity?? np).

I. Introduction: You’ve probably heard it a million times that obesity is an issue on the rise in America. Well, why if everyone knows that it is a problem is nothing being done to fix it? I’m here to propose a solution to this problem affecting over a third of the adult American Population.
Nutrition labels inform consumers about the nutritional elements and facts of a particular product, including information such as the serving size, calories, calories from fat, total fat, sodium, total carbohydrates, dietary fiber, sugar, and protein. These labels are important as they are a guide to a healthy diet, demonstrating the amounts of nutrients within the items in order to assist one in making healthy diet choices. Also, the nutrition labels of products are essential in order to compare the nutrients found in different products, such as different brands of ice cream or bread, in order to choose which the healthiest product for one’s diet is.
On every food product there is a table of nutritional information that states the exact health contents of the food. There is also a list of ingredients that provides consumers with details regarding the food. In today’s times, consumers are flooded with choices of seemingly similar products. I do not know the difference in nutrition amongst these products. Food labelling is often misleading and deceptive, and I feel as if I have been left in the dark, but also that there is a hidden shadow side that may exist as consumers’ ignoracne may lead to naive incorrect choices.
When one hears the word obesity thoughts that may come to mind are overweight, big, or even unhealthy. "Obesity is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of greater than 30" (Obesity).
In the article, “Unhealthy Diet Problems,” Holly Case states that unhealthy diets are starting to go up and this will cause many health problems in the future. A healthy diet includes fruit, Vegetables and whole grain, but in the time we live in now most people choose to eat anything they want even if it is not healthy. Unhealthy diets can make you have more fat and higher sugar levels. If you eat unhealthy the most common consequences is obesity. There are two ways to find out if you’re obese, They are BMI and Body Mass Index.

Being obese means having so much body fat that your health is in danger. However, being fat is simply not an opinion. Having too much body fat can lead to many diseases.
