Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” is told by one of the main characters named Montresor. Montresor's story is told from the first person perspective. As a reader, we quickly realized that Montresor is filled with revenge and hatred towards a character named Fortunato which ultimately leads up to a cold-blooded murder. We are unable to hear Fortunato’s perspective of what occurred on the day of the murder due to the first person perspective of Montresor. Since the story of “The Cask of Amontillado” is told by Montresor who is unstable, wicked, and manipulative, the reader is not able to rely on the story’s perspective. We can conclude that Montresor is an unreliable narrator.
