Harassment or a Misunderstanding:
The case of Amanda Stein
In the article, Harassment or a Misunderstanding: the case of Amanda Stein, Amanda Stein, leads technical support engineer was facing continuous harassment by her manager Frank Villa. I believe Frank Villa’s attitude towards Amanda Stein was unacceptable because she was being unfairly treated by the fact that she is a woman, and moreover, by the fact that she is Jew.
In today’s society, the issue of harassment in the work place is a very sensitive topic. There are many ways to harass people even though, the harasser do not realize it. For instance, our book list a few items, which are, consider harassment when directed to a person, “dirty jokes, vulgar slang, nude pictures, swearing, and personal ridicule and insult.” (Bohlander 65) even though, Mr. Villa probably did not meant his comments in a malicious way, as stated in the book making a person feel ridiculous its consider harassment in the work place as well.
One of the issues faced by Amanda Stein, in this article, is the fact that Amanda is a woman. For instance, Mr. Villa’s comments towards Amanda being a woman, was harassment, Mr. Villa unacceptable comments such as “I think you have been successful in part due to your ability to take it and give it right back. Most women would have shriveled up around here but you haven’t.” (Page 30) this type of comment was out of place in this situation. As a result, comments like that could of caused Amanda from effectively performing her job; moreover, it could of underestimated her dignity, as a result make her feel like an outsider.
Secondly, Mr. Villa’s constantly comments referring to the fact that Amanda is a Jew, in my opinion, its a hostile situation, and should not be tolerated. I believe that in a work place, an employee’s wok performance can be less effective due to comments related to his/her religious beliefs. Moreover, Mr. Villa’s unnecessary comments towards Amanda, were unethical coming from a supervisor, but more importantly unlawful. As we have leaned in chapter 2, every individual is protected by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibit discrimination and harassment in the work place environment because of the individual’s “race, color, religion, sex o national origin…”(page 54).
In other words, there is certain behavior that is just unacceptable for the work place environment; I believe that Amanda was been constantly discriminated by the fact that she was a Jew.
Stereotypes are used in this case study by Alex and Peter when they are joking around with Jessica about the “el barrio” and that Hispanics do not like barbecue because they lose the beans from their food. As well as making comments on the kind of food she eats while at the office. I do not think any of the three men hold prejudice thoughts about Jessica nor do they show any actions of discrimination. I think this because they say that she is a good worker, compliment the work she has done and state that they do not want to lose her. Also there is never a situation described in the case study that describes an act of discrimination against Jessica, all of which tells me that the issues of discrimination and prejudice are not in this
Assistant Principal Howard implies that gender is an issue in relation to the way she is being treated. Do you agree with her? Provide a rationale for your response. I do not agree that gender is the issue in how she was treated. I think that she was named associate principal because of her ability to lead. Mr. Varber considered her to be a valuable asset on his administrative team because of her experience. He also relied on her to manage the school in his absence. She did this effectively. According to the case study it appeared that Mayor Shea and Superintendent French were aware of Mrs. Howard’s managerial and leadership skills, which helped their decision to appoint her as associate principal. This decision would
The primary diagnosis for Amanda Anderson is separation anxiety disorder (SAD) with a co-morbidity of school phobia. Separation anxiety disorder is commonly the precursor to school phobia, which is “one of the two most common anxiety disorders to occur during childhood, and is found in about 4% to 10% of all children” (Mash & Wolfe, 2010, p. 198). Amanda is a seven-year-old girl and her anxiety significantly affects her social life. Based on the case study, Amanda’s father informs the therapist that Amanda is extremely dependent on her mother and she is unenthusiastic when separated from her mother. Amanda was sitting on her mother’s lap when the therapist walked in the room to take Amanda in her office for an interview (Morgan, 1999, p. 1).
Discrimination in the workplace continues to be topics and issues of discussion, despite efforts to minimize or eliminate its ugly head. Discrimination is defined as the unfair or prejudicial treatment of people based on race, gender, disability or age (Fieser, 2015). Furthermore, some companies has used other forms in conjunction with discrimination like sexual harassment to mask unjust treatment in the workplace. Lilly Ledbetter was an employee at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, Inc. for over 19 years. During this period, she consistently received low rankings in her annual performance-and-salary reviews. As a result, Lilly received significantly lower raises than her male counterparts, which led to her filing a civil lawsuit
Sexism is a highly talked about issue read about online, seen in the news, and experienced in the day to day lives of many. The importance of this issue can be found in many writings. Authors such as Sandra Cisneros, Linda Hasselstrom, and Judy Brady have all discussed the topic of sexism in writings and how they affected their lives. Although each writer addresses the issue of sexism, each author confronts a different type of sexism; the kind we are born into, the kind we learn growing up, and the kind that is accepted by society at the end of the day.
In 2005, a female secretary filed a compliment regarding her exclusion from a social gathering on the basis of her gender. The case eventuated from an issue that the manager had not encouraged the secretary to attend the Christmas party which was served by a topless waitress. As a result of the secretary having no knowledge of the party occurring while working that night, she had become distressed by what she believed was happening...

In the teleplay, Janet just wants to belong with the other people. They think that it is all right to discriminate her just because of her facial looks. “ I want to be like the other people.” (pg 9)She thinks that she should be treated like the others and that everyone who has the same facial features as her should be treated equally too. In the article Nazi Racism, all the handicapped people or mentally ill people were killed because they could not work. The Jews were often humiliated in school because of their religion and what they looked like. Hitler had a plan and he wanted all of the Jews to be removed. He thought since they had a different religion than the others he wanted them all to be killed. He would kill anyone who was unable to work. All in all, it is unfair how people are treated. People have there owned right to do what they want. It does not mean you should discriminate
Harassment has been an issue in the work force and in many other fields for decades, leading all the way back up to 1964. The United States Congress passed Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, prohibiting discrimination at work on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin and sex. There are many different types of harassment that many do not even know that they can be accused for. Through out my research I will be naming every type of harassment and presenting an article for each topic.

In our society most men are likely to obtain higher paying jobs and are able to continue working even after becoming parents, whereas, majority of women obtain lower paying jobs and having to choose between being a parent and having a career. After reading the plays of Top Girls by Caryl Churchill and Hosanna by Michael Tremblay, I discovered that gender played a major role in how men and women are treated in society. The characters in these two plays challenges the gender norms, and therefore, I will argue that women are not treated equally in the workplace; that people who are of the queer community are considered to be inferior and less worthy of being accepted within the public sphere.
Behavior that is considered harassment include, but are not limited to, threats, intimidation, derogatory statements, malicious statements, or any inappropriate, unwelcome, physical or verbal advances, that foster a hostile work environment for the person on the receiving end of the harassing words or actions.
unreasonably interferes with an individual's work performance or creates an intimidating. hostile or offensive work environment. " Sexual harassment can affect all women from different backgrounds, different races and different ages experience harassment on the job, in the school environment, including the place of worship. The act of harassment can fall into this category from vigorous and insignificant situations. For instance, some of the signs of the sexual harassment can be from small comments on women's breasts, unwanted body contact, offensive graphic pictures being sent directly to any individual.
In today’s workplace, sexual harassment is a growing problem. The legal definition of sexual harassment is any unwelcome sexual advance or conduct on the job that creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive working environment. Another definition is the making of unwanted and offensive sexual advances or of sexually offensive remarks or acts, especially by one in a superior or supervisory position. Women and men of all ages, backgrounds, races and experience are harassed on the job. Sexual harassment encountered in workplaces is a hazard across the world that reduces the quality of working life, jeopardizes the well-being of women and men, undermines gender equality and imposes costs on firms and organizations.
