You ever ask someone where they see themselves in life? You may get a variety of different answers. Overtime I went through many different career changes cause I couldn’t really settle with one. Well when it came to wanting to be an Occupational Therapist I grew ecstatic. It wasn’t about the amount of money that could be made it was about the fact that I could help children of all ages to conquer things they struggled with before. Occupational therapists goals are to serve clients to get them back to their working environment successfully. Occupational therapy was discovered in 1917 by Phillipe Pinel and William Tuke. In this time it was known as the rehabilitation movement. “It was during this period that revolutionary ideas were evolving regarding the “infirmed” and mentally-ill. At this time in history, the mentally ill were treated like prisoners; locked up and considered to be a danger to society” (“Where Did We Come From?... How Did We Get Here?”). “Keith Currier” an Occupational therapist at Fawcett Memorial stated that the main goal for in OT is improving hand strength. Patients with physical issue use Theraputty which is putty that hardens and is used to exercise the joints in the hand. Theraputty is used by certified hand therapist. “A Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) is an occupational therapist or physical therapist who has a minimum of five years of clinical experience. Including 4,000 hours or more in direct practice in hand therapy” (“Who is a Certified Hand Therapist?”). OT’s use different tests to identify a patient’s weakness and strengths which allows them to develop a care plan. A 9- hole peg test is an indication of fine motor coordination. It’s used to show the grip strength of how hard the muscles work. This helps Ot’s create home program exercises such as washing, showering and anything that’s included in their daily
