In Karen Horney’s essay, “The Distrust Between the Sexes,” she demonstrates how the expectations we have when we are in love can often lead to disappointment. “An almost unavoidable source of disappointment and distrust in our normal love life derives from the fact that the very intensity of our feelings of love stirs up all of our secret expectations and longing for happiness, which slumber deep inside us (361).” Simply, projecting our desires, expectation and sometimes guilt upon our lover can lead to disappointment. Love, in this way, can be a hugely unsatisfying because our expectations for it can be contradictory in nature and sometimes unrealistic.
Ideally we would want a partner who possesses desirable traits. We want a partner who possesses both strength and weakness, who is pure and wicked, and additionally someone who will love us as deeply as we do them. However, it is very rare that someone will find that perfect partner who fulfills all of their desires. In my opinion, men and women usually project their guilt in ornate behaviors that lead to a breakdown in trust. For example, many people who are unfaithful often accuse their partner of cheating due to their own guilty conscience. Also, we can project our insecurities on our relationships; we do this unconsciously when we feel that we are not good enough or unable to fulfill our partner’s expectations in the relationship, and do this in many different ways.
I once was in a situation, one I’m confident most of us have been in, where my partner accused me of cheating and was very adamant about this. In addition, there seemed to be no way to assure her of any other reality. I later came to find out that she was the one being unfaithful during this period of time. Shortly afterward I came to the conclusion that she was projecting her guilt on our relationship, and that was the reason why she was convinced that I was being unfaithful.
A developed relationship can be interpreted as one where the couple is interdependent, tolerant, and dedicated. Equity allows a relationship to efficiently develop in this manner. Judith Viorst illustrates a poem depicting a couple’s struggles and their sacrifices for the other in “True Love”. In many points of the poem, the couple is compromising for the other’s flaws in order to avoid unnecessary conflicts. “I do not resent watching the Green Bay Packers / Even though I am philosophically opposed to football” (Stanza 1) is an example of the wife forcing herself
As Horney moves on, she accounts for an almost unavoidable source of disappointment in our love life. It derives from intense feelings of love stirring up secret hopes for contentment. Intim...
Most of the time love is our encouragement when we are in trouble, sometimes love can drag us to things we don’t want to happen in our lives. “First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross carried letters from a girl named Martha, a junior at Mount Sebastian College in New Jersey. They were love letters, but Lieutenant Cross was hoping, so he kept them folded in plastic at the bottom of his rucksack.” (p.1) The letters from Martha signed, “Love Martha” even though the letters were not love letters, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross understands that he doesn’t receive the type of love he hopes for from Martha.
"The fact is that white-collar criminals are, in general, incredibly good at deluding themselves that they’re good people, even when they clearly aren’t." according to Felix Salmon on white-collar crime. The definition of a criminal is a person who has committed a crime but if you were to ask a white-collar criminal they wouldn't consider themselves a criminal. Many of the convicted white-collar criminals contrast their actions with "real" criminals who commit street crime. First I will summarize "Denying the Guilty Mind:Accounting for Involvement in White-Collar Crime" written by Micheal L. Benson. Then I will use information from my criminology class to better define white collar crimes. Lastly, I will define Strain Theory and how it relates to white-collar crimes The increase of certain strains that cause negative emotions such as frustration and anger better known as Strain Theory is the cause of white-collar crime.
This quote from Minot summarizes the love affairs in her short story "Lust" and T. Coraghessan Boyle's short story "Carnal Knowledge." The protagonists in these stories go to great lengths to please their significant others hoping to find loving, fulfilling relationships. They make sacrifices and relinquish certain degrees of power to find happiness, only to discover that this happiness is temporary. Both authors use literary techniques to enhance these themes. The short stories "Lust" and "Carnal Knowledge" maintain that relationships that lack an honest, loving foundation and a lack of balance of power end abruptly and cause pain and loneliness.
Love and affection is an indispensable part of human life. In different culture love may appear differently. In the poem “My god my lotus” lovers responded to each other differently than in the poem “Fishhawk”. Likewise, the presentation of female sexuality, gender disparity and presentation of love were shown inversely in these two poems. Some may argue that love in the past was not as same as love in present. However, we can still find some lovers who are staying with their partners just to maintain the relationship. We may also find some lovers having relationship only because of self-interest. However, a love relationship should always be out of self-interest and must be based on mutual interest. A love usually obtains its perfectness when it develops from both partners equally and with same affection.
The world-renowned novel, The Kite Runner was written by Afghanistan born American novelist Khaled Hosseini. Hosseini was born into a Shia Muslim family in Kabul that later in life decided to move to Paris. Hosseini was unable to return to Kabul due to the Taliban take over, this cause the Hosseini family to seek political asylum in America. The actions that Hosseini witnessed of his beloved home country influenced his novel with the themes of guilt and redemption. “The guilty one is not he who commits the sin, but the one who causes the darkness.” – Victor Hugo. In The Kite Runner the theme of guilt and redemption is shown through the character development of the protagonist Amir. Hosseini used Amir’s guilt of his past to grow the impression that with regret lies a hope for redemption.
Romans 1: 18-23 talks about why the human race is guilty before God: demonstrations of our ungodliness and unrighteousness. Let’s start by looking at verse 18b. “Against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, suppress the truth in unrighteousness,” each verse has one or two key words, and those words are ungodliness, and unrighteousness. Ungodliness refers to man’s offenses against God, and unrighteousness refers to the sins of man against man. These two words give us the reasons why we are guilty before God. We can’t say that we aren’t guilty because we know we are, it clearly says ALL are ungodly and ALL are unrighteous. Another important thing to point out is that no one can suppress the truth. Mankind does suppress the truth of God.
Love is a concept that has puzzled humanity for centuries. This attachment of one human being to another, not seen as intensely in other organisms, is something people just cannot wrap their heads around easily. So, in an effort to understand, people write their thoughts down. Stories of love, theories of love, memories of love; they all help us come closer to better knowing this emotional bond. One writer in particular, Sei Shōnagon, explains two types of lovers in her essay "A Lover’s Departure": the good and the bad.
When looking at the differences of how women and men think about love, a very different point is made. In Steve Harvey’s book Act Like A Lady Think Like A Man, he discusses a woman’s love for her man, “Nothing … can compare with a woman’s love”(19). “A woman’s love it is kind and compassionate, patient and nurturing, generou...
The novel Atonement written by Ian McEwan conveys the effect of guilt and a quest for atonement through wasted chances. Throughout the story, Briony, the main character is seeking forgiveness or trying to atone for the crime she committed as a 13 year old girl in the first part of the story. She falsely accuses Robbie of a crime he did not commit, partly because she didn’t really understand what she saw. The rest of the novel is about the far reaching consequences of her actions. One is her relationship with her sister Cecilia is ruined, so she grieves their lost bond as sisters. She also feels even worse about the relationship and the time together Cecilia and Robbie could have had.
Society’s visual perception of a perfect partner is very different compared to mine. It’s pictured as someone who is without flaws, and makes no errors. While I’ms sure everyone wants someone like this, it just isn’t that possible, all of us make mistakes, we have flaws, and bad days. The truth of it is, that we’re all different people with contrastive mindsets, so everyone is going to have a somewhat unlike perception of the perfect
Over many years philosophers and psychologists have proposed various aspects of love. Love is wildly varied in its expression and its experience; its study can contribute benefit from both the incisive and rigorous views yielded by psychologists and the wide-angle, social, cultural, and historical views employed by sociologists.
If a married couple plans to live life together and work with each other, trust is essential. For instance, a husband must trust that his wife will not commit adultery, and vice versa. If a spouse is constantly paranoid that their partner is thinking about someone else, then neither the husband nor the wife will living in harmony. A real life example of trust in marriage comes from a couple in their nineties. Their marriage has lasted over sixty years, and the secret to their relationship is to do as they are told. If a husband always does what his wife tells him to do then
...he sweat and painstaking talent artists put into a piece of art. Likewise, when an onlooker sees a couple in love, how are they to distinguish whether it is true love or merely youthful, immature love? For this reason, only experienced lovers are capable of detecting true love in others. The potential beauty of love is held at the mercy of the two lovers. Thus the extent to which the love will mature depends on the unpredictable course the journey of love takes throughout its progressive stages. As with a painting, at it’s beginning, love has the potential to be something powerful and immortal. Easy love is happy, immature love. For love to be deep and meaningful, it must face challenges and overcome adversity. Love is the artwork of nature. Like the beautiful and serene calm after a vicious storm, love is often dangerous and uncomfortable before it can be lovely.
