Karen Horney's "The Distrust Between the Sexes"
In Karen Horney's "The Distrust Between the Sexes," she attempts to explain the problems in the relationships between men and women. She writes that to understand the problem you must first understand that problems stem from a common background. A large amount of suspiciousness is due to people's intensity of emotions.
Early in Horney's essay, she defines passion and discusses why it is rare. People do not feel safe putting all of their faith and trust in only one other person. Horney explains that self-preservation is part of human instinct, and people have a fear of losing themselves in their loved one.
Next, Horney explains how people often overlook their own impulses. The pressure from their conscience causes them to project these impulses onto their partners. Projection results in distrust of their partner's emotions toward them.
As Horney moves on, she accounts for an almost unavoidable source of disappointment in our love life. It derives from intense feelings of love stirring up secret hopes for contentment. Intim...
Although many women have internalized the sexism of the world they live in, not many realize that it may impact their lives in some way or form. Nia Rhoney is a fellow classmate and great friend who now attends Clemson University. I selected Nia because she was not your average girl. Her views on the world are nonchalant and she does not take on the conformities that are expected of a regular teenage girl. Destinee Green is my first cousin. She is a very educated individual who is involved tremendously in the community which has allowed her to become a lively, well-rounded person. Cynthia Stewart is my dear mother and was a great candidate to me because she has been through so much in her short life. From being very sick at a young age, to
Today, women are not typically seen in higher levels of position in the work force than men. In Anne-Marie Slaughter’s article “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All”, she uses her own experience to convey why it is not possible for a woman to work in a higher position, due to women being more emotional than men. People still believe it’s a women’s place to stay at home to cook, clean and take care of the children, while the men go to work to pay the bills. And it’s considered odd if the man is a stay at home father and the woman is working 24/7 and is never home. Even though it is rewarding to be able to always be there to see your child’s milestones in their life. It is always nice to get away from that life for even a moment. I don’t mean going out with the girls or guys, while you hire a babysitter, but helping your husband or wife pay the bills, so you have two rather than one income coming in at the end of the month. In Richard Dorment’s article, “Why Men Still Can’t Have It All” he states that both men and women can’t have it all. I agree with both Slaughter and Dorment, but not entirely. I believe if you want to be a good
After those heartbreaking years of deaths, Simeon heard of the mormons and became very interested. He named his son Mosiah after the Book of Mormon and it’s people was born on February 19, 1837. The same day, his twin Anariah was born that day but died a few hours after birth. Betsy, who was a healthy child was born March 22,1838. At the time, Simeon’s brother James came to Simeon’s home as a missionary of the church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints. He preached them and Simeon and his wife was baptized by him on April 15,1839. But that wasn’t enough for Simeon. He wanted to see the prophet Joseph in person, and maybe even offer his services to the church. In June 1840, he set off to Nauvoo on foot which was a 500 mile trip. There he saw the prophet Joseph Smith. Simeon was set ap...
Abraham Maslow, a well-known American psychologist, theorized that human beings have innate needs that must be met in order to have a happy, healthy existence. The most necessary is, of course, the fulfillment of basic physiological requirements, followed by a feeling of safety. If these are fulfilled, every mentally healthy individual begins craving love and a need to belong. Love and being loved in return is, in fact, vital to an individual’s mental state. This, in addition to the feeling of euphoria, pleasure and joy it provides, and the sensual experience of romantic love, makes it a great obsession in nearly every culture. This craving humans to have their unrequited love returned makes great fodder for movies, songs, and novels. Many
In between this time he talked about how they became rich and how they lost it and how they became rich again and lost it. He also talked about their trips to different places and they also talked about Slade and Indians and Mormons, which brings me to my topic. My report is on the Mormons and their history, their part in the book and many other things. The Mormons have been a group for over 40 years and they have hated "Gentiles" for their whole existence because wherever they go they are hunted or chased by these "Gentiles". Joseph Smith was the founder of the Book of Mormons and the religion of Mormonism. After being kicked out of everywhere they finally settled in Ohio. There they built a church and they stayed there for a while.

Joseph Smith Jr. was a very religious and God fearing man. He founded the Latter Day Saint movement, better known as the Mormon Church. He was persecuted by some and embraced by others, as well. He has been one of the most controversial men in history, today, because of his beliefs and his teachings. They were different for his time and still very strange for our time.
Jealousy is an emotional state that erupts when a valued relationship is being threatened (Buss et al., 1992). Men and women both express jealousy tendencies when they feel their romantic relationships are being threatened. Many researchers have studied sex differences in romantic jealousy to investigate at what particular time do men and women feel the most distressed or jealous. For instance, Bus et al. (1992) and Harris and Christenfeld (1996), found that men feel more distressed when they think their romantic partner is engaging in sexual infidelity, whereas women feel more distressed when they think their romantic partner is emotionally attached to someone else. These findings may be very insightful and useful to many of us who experience jealousy episodes; but importantly, it will allow us to investigate the validity of the evolutionary theory that is used to explain most sex differences. In the following paragraphs, I will describe the evolutionary theory that explains sex differences in jealousy and four related empirical studies. Lastly, I will
History books have called Joseph Smith an American religious leader who founded the modern day Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS). This religious institution is based on Smiths visions and the followers of the LDS church are called Mormon’s. His vision was for the restoration of the early Christian church and a new way of life to live by. While Smith visions and ethics have been controversial at times, millions still follow his teachings and the religious culture he started in 1830. Today the Mormon Church has over 15 million followers and has grown to touch many parts of the world with its 83 thousand missionaries. (A Prophet)
People are stereotyped at least once in theirs lives whether it’s directly or indirectly, but most of the time it isn’t the truth. The Dinner Part is a short story that has an example of stereotyping. A hostess and host are throwing a party. A colonel begins topic about gender stereotypes between some guests at a table. One women disagrees with his statement. Meanwhile, a cobra sneaks into the house where only the hostess and an American guest realize it. Intentionally leaving out the fact that there is a cobra in the room, he heroically makes a plan and saves everybody. In the short story “The Dinner Party” by Mona Gardner, the author expresses gender stereotypes can lead to false assumptions.
Joseph Smith's religion had started in upstate New York on the Erie Canal in 1830 (Ellwood 208). The mormons believe that the bible was translated incorrectly and that their story came from the Hebrew portion of the
A wise man once said “Man is only great when he acts from passion.” When you hear the word passion, the first thing that might come to your mind is something related to love, and you’re not entirely wrong. According to Merriam- Webster’s dictionary, passion is defined as a strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or about doing something or a strong feeling (such as anger) that causes you to act in a dangerous way. All in all, it is a strong feeling, be it happiness, sadness, anger or liberality. You can be passionate about many things such as love, sports, food, or intimacy. However, it can also mean having a strong yearning for something.
Traditional gender roles exist in Gabriel Garcia Marquez’ novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, but traditional distribution of power between the genders does not. In analyzing each character and their life, it’s easy to see how Marquez presented each in terms of his own view on gender constructs. Marquez portrays femininity and masculinity very differently. But why would Marquez choose to make such a clear distinction between the roles of each gender? Marquez sees women as spiritual and overpowered by traditional standards, and men doomed by their own obsessions. Men are wily and therefore vulnerable, whereas women are dignified and durable, and survive for much longer.
Jamaica Kincaid’s “Girl” shows in society how a woman should be placed and what it means to be a woman. A women doesn’t question her partner, instead she is subservient to him. A woman’s duties include staying at home taking care of the children and cooking; while the man works and brings home the money. A feministic approach to Kincaid’s “Girl” points to the idea of the stereotypes that women can only be what they do in the home, they should only be pure and virtuous, and their main focus should be satisfying their husband.
At the root of most jealousy, lies a fear of losing something that we have. Jealousy can manifest itself in various relationships. Envy, its close cousin, is the desire for that which we do not have. Jealousy can be found in the context of lovers, and it can be found in the context of siblings or friends. The most obvious and prevalent forms of jealousy are those that manifest themselves in intimate and sexual relationships. It can arise if one person feels that the other is receiving too much attention from someone else. Jealousy can also manifest if one feels that their significant other is giving too much attention or the wrong kind of attention to someone else. Either way, the underlying emotion behind jealousy is a fear of losing. This could be a fear of losing their partner all together, or
