Darrell Mercer was forced to leave his home in Philadelphia to move all the way to California to live with his grandfather. He didn’t want to but he had no choice. He left his friends behind. In his new school Bluford High, Darrell will have to pass his classes for the other half of the year and make friends in his classes. He just needs to survive the bullies while getting good grades. Darrell is a 15-year-old boy living in California. According to the novel, “Darrell had always been short for his age. At fifteen years old, he was just under five feet. He was also skinny, without a respectable muscle in his small body.” (Page 3) and “Back in September, Darrell had dreaded starting Franklin High, but his friends were right there with him.” (Page 3) Darrell is not the strongest or the tallest but he had friends in Philadelphia. But now in California, he has no friends in Bluford High. The Theme of The Bully is no matter how small, or different, if you put your mind to it you can do anything to change things for the better. Darrell, a Junior at Bluford High, is the protagonist of the story. Darrell and his mom move to the California in the middle of the school year because she lost her job.
