Have you ever wondered what Saturday school was like under the supervision of MR. Vernon. The Breakfast club, directed by John Hughes is the remarkable story about 5 students who got Saturday schools. Before we get into the thick of it let's start from the beginning. It was a crisp fall day in the month of march, march 24 to be exact 5 students were going to spend 9 hours in school on a Saturday. They were under the strict vision of MR. Vernon from 7am to 4pm. The kids were instructed to write a 1000-word paper on the topic of, “Who You Think You Are” and how they ended up there. What the five delinquents did not know going into detention how similar they are even though they are so different. John Hughes uses typical high school activities …show more content…
to show how different cliques in high school have so much in common. The main question is how did they get into those cliques?.
andrew the athlete a wrestler from sherman high school was pushed by his coach and his father to be the best athlete he could be . In the movie he monics his dad by saying,”were winners not losers”. The nerd Brian a member of the physics club was pushed by his teachers and his parents to do the best he could in school. Before he goes into detention his mom says,” make some use of the time you have in their: go right in, sit down and study. The bully a real jerk John Bender who was made this way because of his father. When andrew asks about his home life john tells him. He gets punched by his dad who is an alcoholic and has anger issues.he then goes over to andrew and says what does this look like? It was a burn from a cigar put on his arm by his father. John says in my house this is what you get for spilling paint in the garage. Claire aka Miss popularity. Is this way because of the people she is around her parents a very wealthy and so are the people she hangs around. This wealth and snobbery rubs off on her. Allison the gothic girl.she is an introvert thought the beginning of the movie she has very little to say and as time goes on she gets more comfortable and opens …show more content…
up. How does 9 hours of nothing but each other affect them. At the beginning they were all very nervous and not excited to be their. As time went on John and Mr. Vernon got into it they started having a good time. They were all being bad together; for some of them this was the first time. They snuck out of detention and then ran from vernon, smoked pot in the library then talked for a few hours. Through all of these activities they really got to know each other they really became good friends. In my opinion they found themselves. They realized just because you're not an athlete or a miss popularity does not mean you can't have fun together. Or you can't be friends with each other. This is shown throughout the movie when John Claire and brian were smoking pot together. They were all just hanging out talking about life, and having a great time with each other. In that scene they realize how stubborn they have been. I say this because they realize that there is so much more to high school than just their clique of 5 friends. Claire especially. She says that she hates having to always do what her friends are doing and hates to have her friends approve of what she does. Now you maybe asking yourself how can I relate this to my life; or what is the morale of the movie. When I was in 7th grade my best friend started to become popular with the quote on quote jocks. He started to change. I noticed when we would walk together to our classes he would always walk behind if in front of me so then his other friends would not see him talking to me. I did not realizes this until he started to be short and not talk with me even in our classes together. At school I asked him if everything was alright and he said,”yeah why.” I said,” well you have been acting kinda wired” he said,”no I'm fine.” The funny thing was as soon as we were outside of school he would talk with me and hang out with me. I did not understand. Once we went to high school I became his best friend he would walk with me in the halls and would not be ashamed. I then started to make a lot of friends and people would wake me why I hang out with him. I would just say because I like him and he is a good guy. This is where this movie relates to me. No matter if you're part of dweebs or the football stud you should be friends with everyone. I can't fathom in my mind why people do this; it makes no sense what so ever At the end of the day brian brings up the question,” will we still be friends on monday or will things return to the way they are.” Claire responds with,”things will go back to the way they are.” everyone else is in outrage. Then claire brings up the point what if you were with your friends andrew would you say hi or brush it saying who's that kid. Brain starts to tear up. John jumps in and says,” what a bitch”. Claire says,” i'm just being honest.” Brian at this point is crying because he really likes these guys. He is upset because his friends would never do the things they did that day. He also realizes that this was one of the best days of his life and he wants to continue to make more memories with these people. I believe that they will be friends on monday. I say this because why would you not want to be friends with everyone. So what if their goth or nerdy, if you like them then hang out with them. Dont worry what your other friends will think or say. Like every good story there must be an ending.
The breakfast club with the unexpected mingling between Andrew and Allison. 2 totally diffrent personality's a high school jock if you will and a gothic freak . This relationship starts to bloom when alison asks claire for a makeover. Claire adjusts her hair, pulling it away from her face. When andrew firsts saw his face was glowing; it was almost an instant attraction. The movie does not show us what happens after that day, but I would have liked to know how that relationship worked out. That was not the only sparks that flew, John and Claire. This is so unaccepted because of the vast differences in their personalities and interests. One would have not thought a juvenile and miss popularity would get together. At the end of the day brian brings up the question will we still be friends on monday or will things return to the way they are. Claire responds with things will go back to the way they are. John says,” what a bitch”. Claire says i'm just being honest. Brian at this point is crying because he really likes these guys. Dont
worry what your other friends will think or say. How the tides have changed at the start of the movie everyone was judging each other by the way they dressed and looked.once they got to know each other they realized that they were great people by the end of the movie 4 of them were together, as in a relationship. Andrew and Allison were together and Clair and John. This is a remarkable story of how many things we have in common with people no matter what they look like or how they act.
The good characters even though few in number are willing to go the distance (especially for Jerry). Jerry is the main character of the story. He has a struggle with in himself to do the right thing. He mess with the wrong people in the school and they make him pay for it, because no one can mess with the Vigils and get away with it. He was to refuse to take chocolates for ten days. However he still refuses to take the chocolates after the ten days. Brother Jacques is another one of the good guys because he sees that Brother Leon is truely an evil man and abuses his power the power that he has over the kids. He saves Jerry at the of the story from the boxing match. Goober is a good person with a big heart, but is not to smart to get out when in to deep helping Jerry to get out. All that he wanted to do was to play football and to run.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze a movie and list five sociological concepts outlined in our textbook, Sociology A Down-To-Earth Approach, 6th edition by James M. Henslin, which was published by Pearson Education, Inc in 2015, 2013, and 2011. I have chosen the movie, “The Breakfast Club.” This is a 1985 movie directed by John Hughes. It is about five high school students that have detention on a Saturday for nine hours. The five students are played by, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, and Anthony Michael Hall. These five students are deviant in their own particular ways and have different stereotypes. Eventually the students share personal information about their
In the iconic film, The Breakfast Club, five random high school students must spend their Saturday together in detention. Each teen is in detention for a different reason. The Jock (Andrew), the Princess (Claire), the Brain (Brian), the Basket Case (Allison), and the Criminal (Bender) must put aside their differences to survive their grueling eight-hour detention with their psychotic and rash principal Mr. Vernon. While in detention, they are expected to write about “who they really are” in one thousand words. Throughout the day, their actions reveal their innermost struggle involving their cliques and their home lives. As the movie progresses, we find out the reason each teen is in detention that culminates in a climactic discussion about
Breakfast Club film contained a wide variety of behavior and stereotypes. Each person had their on personality and taste at the beginning of the film. I believe that communication played the biggest part in the movie. It shows the way that people from totally different backgrounds can communicate and even agree on issues. The various types of communication and behaviors within the film will be discussed.
The Breakfast Club, showed viewers how people from all economic backgrounds have something in common. From the very beginning of the film, as each student is dropped of for detention, the assumption about what these kid’s home life is like, what type of child they are and what social class they come from is established. When the kids are sitting in the library, where they sit even screams social standing. Claire and Andy sit next to each other because, from what we can tell, they are in the same standing. The hierarchy is started right from the beginning. The other kids all choose seats behind them. This shows that the popular, upper class, come first, everyone else is under them.
Every person sees themselves differently, whether you're the jock, the brain, or even the criminal, we all have a plethora of personality quirks in common. We don't belong solely to the singular “clique” that society has placed us in. Throughout The Breakfast Club, we see ourselves in each of the characters, and so did John Hughes, while we may relate to a singular character or clique in the beginning, we come to see ourselves, our struggles in each and every character. Though John Hughes may have seen himself as the geek or the athlete in high school, that's not all he was, and it's through this classic film that he shows himself to be all of the characters in some way or another. We're all united in common beliefs, in
The film, The Breakfast Club, introduces five students, each perceived with a different stereotype which is commonly found in American high schools.
Mack attempts to do stuff but every time he gets himself in trouble. Eddie is a back-up bartender at the local bar and brings home stolen bottles after work. Gay stays with the boys because his wife likes to beat him but he is often in jail or at the bar because of all the fights he gets into with his wife, Doc finds a couple of dead people laying on the beach and a couple of people committed suicide. After everything came together, the party was a job well done and everyone had a lot of fun.
The movie The Breakfast Club is a perfect example of peer relationships in the adolescent society. It shows the viewer some of the main stereotypes of students in high school you have a jock, a nerd, the weirdo, a rebel, and a prep. Over the course of a Saturday detention the different types of peers learn a lot about one another by hearing what each one has done to get into Saturday detention as well as why they chose to do it.
Social Psychology is the study of how we think and relate to other people. These psychologists focused on how the social situation influences others behavior. We see social influences everywhere we go, but might not notice it. Like when watching a movie for fun you do not notice it as much as when you are actually looking for the behaviors, like in the film The Breakfast Club. There are several examples of social psychological behaviors in the film.
In the film The Breakfast Club there are various social psychological theories and concepts that describe the inner selves of the characters. The characters in the film are initially perceived in a certain manner by each other because of knowing the way they behave in school and the type of people and environment they surround themselves with in school. However one detention on a Saturday brings these characters together and throughout the film their true personalities and behaviors start to reveal themselves by means of social psychological theories and concepts. The characters individually and as a group display their personalities through theories and concepts of social psychology. At the very start of the film, one of the concepts displayed is the acceptance type of conformity. The principal assigns the characters (students) to complete a task and because he is a figure of authority, the characters accept having to complete the task by the end of the day without any attempts to alter that. One of the students, Claire Standish, is revealed to display the concept of narcissism, which is unfortunately a dark side of herself. This is evident as Claire claims that she is popular and loved by her fellow schoolmates and seems to care and showcase her rich and beauty too much. She is, as her detention-mates discover, full of herself. In addition this also shows signs of the spotlight effect theory which can relate to Claire in that she believes that her schoolmates look at her and pay so much attention to her appearance add rich, spoiled-like behavior. Another character to show a theory of social psychology is Allison Reynolds. In the film, Allison is a character with an introvert personality, although she also displays strange and...
The film being analysed is the Breakfast Club, directed by John Hughes. Trapped in Saturday detention are 5 stereotyped teens. Claire, the princess, Andrew, the jock, John, the criminal, Brian, the brain, and Allison, the basket case. At 7 am, they had nothing to say, but by 4 pm; they had uncovered everything to each other. The students bond together when faced with the their principal, and realise that they have more in common than they think, including a hatred for adult society. They begin to see each other as equal people and even though they were stereotyped they would always be The Breakfast Club. The Breakfast Club highlights a variety of pressures that are placed upon teenagers through out high school. One of the most challenging aspects of screenwriting is creating characters that an audience can identify with, relate to, and be entertained by.
John Hughes’ 1985 film, The Breakfast Club, gives countless examples of the principles of interpersonal communication. Five high school students: Allison, a weirdo, Brian, a nerd, John, a criminal, Claire, a prom queen, and Andrew, a jock, are forced to spend the day in Saturday detention. By the end of the day, they find that they have more in common than they ever realized.
Despite an inappropriate music-video sequence and a phony up-tempo finale, The Breakfast Club offers a breakthrough portrait of the pain and misunderstanding which result from the social hierarchy created by youth themselves. The lookers and the jocks are popular and can do whatever they want — except relate to those outside their social circle of winners.
