The viewer encounters an exquisite display of tone when Pavel enters the kitchen to deliver vegetables, alarming Elsa and peaking Bruno’s interest. Elsa’s frantic behavior delivers an air of uneasiness and uncomfortableness as she attempts to summon Bruno to his room. The absence of sound or music and the stunning contrast of Elsa’s frightened demeanor and Bruno’s innocent fascination create a tone of secrecy, fear, and deception. These combined elements also collaborate to affirm the themes of fear and lies and to further insinuate to the viewer as to what both Bruno’s mother and father are hiding. A second example of tone in the film, again, is the spellbinding, tragedy-ridden scene when Elsa mourns Bruno’s death at the camp’s fence as rain barrages her skin from the dark sky above. Tone is crafted through the use of lighting, sound, and camera angles. The saturated, dark lighting, the deafening sound of Elsa’s screaming, and the camera looking down on Elsa all generate a tone of sadness, misery, regret, grief, and fear. Elsa’s miniscule, frail appearance (due to the camera angle) perpetuates the tone of regret, something Elsa feels for exposing Bruno to the painful reality of the Holocaust. When the more thoughtful and intimate parts of the movie present themselves, a slow paced piano is used to match the solemn moment. Sections of the movie have a positive and optimistic outlook, for example, when Karl walks through the small country town to the house of his new found friend. Karl is obviously filled with awe and enthusiasm for his resurrection into life, this is reflected through the music. An intimate moment in the movie is between Karl and the boy. Karl tells an extremely sad story. A soulful slide guitar and whistling accompanies this story, the music is extremely sad and is the emotion for the kind hearted but seemingly emotionless Karl. Another touching and emotional part of the movie is when Karl visits his father. Whilst Karl walks to the run down house of his elderly father, harmonious voices sing a haunting gospel tune.

Although it is highly improbable that a son of a German high-ranking Schutzstaffel (SS) officer would not know what a Jew is and would be unable to pronounce both Fuhrer and Auschwitz, (which he instead mispronounces as ‘Fury’ and ‘Out-with’ respectively, both of which are intentional emotive puns placed by the author to emphasize the atrocity of the events), the attribution of such information demonstrates the exaggerated innocence of Bruno and allows the audience to know and understand more than him. “Apocalypse Now” is a legendary war film directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The film’s main theme is devastation, violence, and horror. In this film Coppola thoroughly scrutinized the main characters ideas, behavior, and emotions to depict the darkness and the horror of war. His goal was to make the audience part of the horror. He wanted the audience to have a tremendous impact on this film and he succeeded with the perfect use of sound and editing in the ending sequence of his film. I will demonstrate how Coppola exploits a wide array of sound and editing to create suspense, intensity, and anxiety in the sequence to affect the audience’s emotions, using diegetic ambient sound effects, non-diegetic music, voice over and four editing types.

It is obvious that with Herman’s relatively clean representation of this era, he felt it was most important to resonate with the audience in a profound and philosophical manner rather than in a ruthlessly infuriating way. Despite scenes that are more graphic than others, the film's objective was not to recap on the awful brutality that took place in camps such as the one in the movie.

The trailer released for the film followed suit, flashing images of violence, guns, and heart-throb Leonardo DeCaprio, in order to grab the attention of the audience. In most cases, people do not realize that behind these scenes lies subliminally transmitted emotion. Through the instrumentation that guides the trailer, the audience’s perceptions of the juxtaposed images are altered. By changing this music, one can change the tone of the entire trailer.

His use of close-ups and camera movements, especially the subjective stance used by the victim, convey the feelings felt by the characters and the way in which they behave.
