#15 Island of The Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell is an example of the genre of historical fiction. The story is based upon a real story of a woman who lived alone on an island for eighteen years. The writing follows the years of this with its descriptions and true characteristics of this time period. The main character is a girl named Karana who lives on an island with her whole village including her brother. The story goes from the village being decimated by a battle, to everyone left leaving to find another home. Karana’s brother Ramo is not on the ship, but the captain will not wait for him. Karana jumps ship and stays on the island with her brother who is killed by feral dogs. Ironically she takes in a feral dog and trains him
and they become best friends. Over the following years, she is alone, aside from her dog, fending for herself. A ship arrives one day, she encounters a girl who she is growing fond of, but as quickly as they arrived, they depart as well. This encounter makes her realize how alone she feels. Two years after this event, another ship arrives and she makes her presence known. She is taken to a mission in California. She learns that the ship that her village left on sunk in a storm with all lives lost, which is why they never sent anyone to rescue her. The lessons in this story are perseverance, forgiveness, and love.
I am reading tides of war blood in the water by Alexander London. It's about a navy seal who is a dolphin trainer. The book started with him and his brother are surfing and his brother got palled under by a shark and Cory the older brother help him get top. So far the book is really good.

O’Dell’s book takes place on an island and he does an excellent job at describing the beach environment around the main character Karana. In The Island of the Blue Dolphins Karana is alone on the island and has a fear of meeting the tribe the Aleuts due to past encounters of them with her tribe. At first Karana hides from them, but throughout the novel she overcomes her fear. By the end of the novel she approaches the next ship that comes to the island and leaves with them. Karana overcame her fear by the end of the novel and learns to forgive her enemies. This story inspired me to write my short story and to have a character overcome their fear of being

Globalization is _______ and thus has the potential to do a lot good and to bring prosperity to many people around the globe. However, its management brings about social fragmentation that leads to violence and corruption, and creates opportunities for transnational criminal organizations to arise and to remain in business. An example of such organization is the Pink Panthers who according to the Interpol is a group behind armed robberies in East Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the United States. They are believed to have “carried out robberies worth in excess of EUR 330 million since 1999. Hundreds of suspects are linked to more than 340 robberies in 35 countries” (Interpol). In 2013 for instance, in Cannes, France, the Pink Panthers in less than 60 seconds stole $138 million worth of jewels. Within a few days some of the jewels were recovered in New York. This criminal organization is made up of jewelry thieves from the former Yugoslavia, which began due to the extreme violence and political instability during the Balkan wars of the 1990s.
Typically, the image of a Viking is a barbaric, bearded man plundering and destroying a neighboring village. This is actually the stereotypical viewpoint. In actuality, Vikings, have a very different image. For example, Vikings did not wear furry boots or furry armor, they did not have horned helmets, they invaded Britain, and they also were the first to discover America! They were also experts in nautical technology, crafts, trading, warfare and many other skills (Jonsson 1). With all of these traits, the Vikings seem like an unstoppable force in the European continent. But, who were the Vikings? The Vikings were actually venturesome seafarers. This means that they were travelers who were constantly exploring and looking for new areas of land. There roots can be traced all the way back to 6000 B.C. were nomadic men traveled in primitive crafts up the Denmark coast. Fast forward two millennia and these nomadic people have established permanent homes, but still using the boat for food and travel. As stated before, they were not just raiders, although they did do this frequently, but they were actually expert traders, trading all around the world. It wasn’t until around 793 A.D. that a Viking explosion took place in northern Europe (Jonsson 2). Raids began to take place on neighboring villages and their places of worship. To some this is the only type of knowledge they have about Vikings. However, their culture was something to be admired. Trading, religion, and everyday life are all important parts of a Viking culture.
The Humpback Whale, Megaptera novaeangliae, is part of the marine mammals group. They are found in oceans all over the world, they live in open waters. Even though they are mammals, they do not live on land (Monterey Bay Aquarium). Humpback whales are known for their magical song that can travel great distances. These gentle giants are omnivores, their main diet is krill. They are mostly found near coastlines feeding on tiny shrimp-like krill, plankton and small fish. Humpbacks migrate annually from summer feeding grounds near the poles to warmer winter breeding water closer to the Equator. Humpback whales are powerful swimmers, and they use their massive tail fin, called a fluke to propel themselves through or even out of the water! Mothers and their young swim close together, often touching one another with their flippers with what appears to be gestures of affection. Even though it takes more than one year for a humpback whale to grow fully, mother whales leave them after one year (National Geographic).
setting of the book is on an island, this has been chosen as a setting
