Dark soot clouds of a grey color collapse over your head as you witness swords clashing against one another, blood shedding from your fellow troopers, and bodies dropping to the grit layered ground in a city named Troy. The Trojan war was a war between the Greeks and the Trojans around the Bronze Age in 1900 B.C.E. It all began when three goddesses , Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite were in competition for the Golden Apple. The Golden apple was promised to be granted to the fairest of all the goddesses. A prince by the name of Paris was chosen to select which Goddess would be awarded the Golden Apple. Paris had chosen Aphrodite and was gifted with the most beautiful woman in all the world, Helen of Troy. Little did he know Helen was already married off to King Menelaus, the king of Greece. Homer’s Iliad has been a European myth for many millennia , the long poetic narrative written in the 8th century B.C. recounts a fearsome war fought over a beautiful woman. The reliability of Homers Iliad as a true historical document has been challenged for hundreds of years and only through archaeological studies can the truth be deciphered. The Iliad was written five centuries after the war, where the stories had been passed down through the oral tradition, therefore the type of society reflected within the poems resemble much more the time of Homer . The fact and fiction of the Iliad has been uncovered through archaeology. Archaeologist found a site in which they thought to have been ‘Troy’ destroyed by the powerful country of Mycenae in the late Bronze Age. They found large amount of material culture from where they could reconstruct the society, this included pottery, engravings, murals and clay tablets. A reason for the Trojan War has always inspired great controversy. The Trojan War according to Homer was fought over the abduction of a beautiful women but this theory appears improbable. Other causes which could have sparked a war is Troy’s geographical positioning. This made it extremely opulent, where other countries of the Aegean would trade there goods and use its harbour. The Mycenaean’s being an extremely imperial, violent and militaristic country would have seen Troy as a great opportunity to gain territory and wealth, on this motive the war took place.

To those who already knew the stories of the Trojan War heroes (which all of the original Greek audience of the epic would),
The epic poem called The Iliad written by Homer concerns the Trojan War. It shows Trojan and Achaean warriors’ courage, bravery and their attempt to become the best fighter to get fame, glory, and honor. The heroes in The Iliad follow Homer’s heroic code, striving for excellence. Hector and Achilles’ strength comes from their desire for fame, glory, honor and their acceptance of fate. These qualities are considered to be characteristics of Homer’s heroic code. However, the actions of Paris are not heroic causing trouble and conflict for many people. In fact, Paris’ non-heroic action started the Trojan War and the hatred between Greece and Troy.
...a trail of destruction in its wake, this war changed the entire course of Ancient Greek history. Even though there has been countless wars in Greek history, the Peloponnesian War was definitely the one with the most consequences.
First, the Greek myth that most people have given credit for the history of how the Trojan War started:
The suspected start of the war- over the abduction of Helen, Queen of Sparta- was caused entirely by a godly conflict over who was the most beautiful- Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. Paris, son of King Priam of Troy, was selected to judge. He chose Aphro...
I have chosen Achilles to write my paper on because his character is the central story line in the Iliad. Although it may seem that the main theme is about the totality and gruesomeness of when the poem is first read, this is not the main focus. The actual fighting and Trojan War could be compared to “Saving Private Ryan.” We get raw details of the war without missing any of the descriptive details. Achilles is the character I was most interested in because he was an extraordinary fighter, man, and hero. We see how Achilles matures from a bloodthirsty warrior in the beginning to a more reserved and thoughtful man by the end of the Iliad.
The first requirement of Aristotle's tragic hero is that they are more admirable than the average character. Achilles meets this requirement because of his ability on the battlefield. In The Iliad, the background to the story is the war between the Greeks and the Trojans. This background is not only the basis for the story overall, but is also the basis for Achilles' own story. This begins when Achilles refuses to join the battle because he is insulted by Agamemnon. This decision results in the action that drives the remainder of the story. Later in the story when Achilles becomes angered and goes to the other extreme, launching into battle and killing ferociously. The significance of this is that it places battle as central to both Achilles' story and to what is important in the setting of the story. Importantly, the aspect that makes Achilles greater than most is his ability o...
Homer, Iliad is the narration of the Trojan war. The Trojan war was one of the most important and significant wars of Greek mythology, Homer described how the war was triggered by the abduction of the most beautiful women known as Helen. This paper will argue how the traditional view of this poem is accurate because it indeed was Helens beauty and her selfishness that sparked the Trojan war. Although Helen was not happy about the outcomes of her mistakes. This paper will present how Helen faced many forms of self judgment, how she created many relationships with significant characters, such as Paris, Priam and Aphrodite. Homers portrayal of this significant women was remarkable as we were able to feel her pain and anguish, the readers were
Stories tell that the Trojan War begun after Paris who was a Trojan Prince stole Helen who was the Queen of Sparta. The husband of Queen Helen, Menelaus had convinced his brother Agamemnon who was the king of Mycenae to lead an expedition to Troy to get her back. Achilles, Ajax, Nestor, and Odysseus along with a fleet of more than a thousand ships accompanied Agamemnon to retrieve her. This is why Helen is described as “the face that launched a thousand ships”. They sailed across the Aegean Sea to invade Troy and to return Helen to Menelaus.
Homer makes it clear that Achilles is a man mainly driven by his hunger for glory. Achilles has all the traits of a superhuman from his strength to his incredible ability to fight on the battlefield. Even with these great abilities, it is hard for many readers to perceive him as a hero because of the way he acts. Homer takes this brief time period out of this whole ten-year war just to demonstrate how Achilles cannot control himself when he goes into a rage. In todays world Achilles would not last long as a soldier in any army because he would be court marshaled for insubordination. Achilles ye...
I. The Trojan War began after the abduction of Queen Helen of Sparta by the Trojan.
Paris was a shepherd and he was asked by three goddesses, Athena, Aphrodite, and Hera, to choose which of them was most beautiful. After listening to each of their bribes, Paris chose Aphrodite. This caused so much of a conflict, that it ended up being the start of the Trojan War. The three goddesses let their vanity and desire to be the most beautiful take control of them. This is yet another time in Greek mythology when physical appearance was proven most important-even more important than the lives of others.
The Trojan War was a very long and brutal war which was essentially caused when Paris of Troy took Helen of Sparta from her husband Menelaus; this enraged the king to the point of sending troops to retrieve her. The Trojan War lasted for somewhat of 10 years. The war was predominantly caused by the mortals; however, as read in several of the books the god’s favored one side or the other, and helped their favorite mortals. Their interference with the mortals in books 1,9,16, and 22 show that the gods were the most responsible for the outcome of the war.
