The Birmingham Letter written by Martin Luther King jr. was a very well written rogerian argument. I believe it is a rogerian argument because he introduced and showed a problem that affected his followers. Martin also presented his beliefs, ideas, and arguments to the reader and the listeners. In addition, Martin wrote with a gracious heart in which he kept a clear tone to begin stating his argument without being insulting. Finally, he displayed the common ground between him and his opposing side. Martin writes the solutions to his problem and way of reaching a settlement with the opposing side. The problem stated in the Birmingham Letter is that african americans are segregated and they are also being judged for protesting. King Jr adds
that they both have common beliefs in religion and many characters were extremists such as Jesus “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, pray for them that despitefully use you”. Not only does he use religion but people they both admire such as Abraham Lincoln “This nation cannot survive half slave and half free”. He also shows that he has completed all his steps to his nonviolent campaign and that he is now sitting in jail. He does not insult but says that he and his followers have tried kindly to obtain their rights. In the letter Martin says “…I have tried to make it clear that is wrong to use immoral means to attain moral ends”. Martin Luther King jr. also adds that if his fellow african americans were to be freed they would be people who symbolize courage, dignity, and be remembered as real heroes. He ends with asking forgiveness if he had made an unreasonable statement.

Throughout the letter, King maintains an understanding yet persistent tone by arguing the points of the clergymen and providing answers to any counterarguments they may have. In the letter, King outlines the goals of his movement and says that he will fight racial inequality wherever it may be. Dr. King uses the appeal three main rhetorical devices – ethos, logos, and pathos – in order to firmly, yet politely, argue the clergymen on the injustices spoken of in their statement.
This letter powerfully persuades his points on why he was in Birmingham, why he acted in a non-violent direct action, why the timing was when it was and that segregation needs to end. He uses this letter in order to persuade the clergymen into understanding his reasons for all the above. He uses logos, pathos and ethos to show the passion behind his cause. This letter opened eyes onto people of that time. Segregation is unjust and that the laws should not bend just for color. He quotes St. Augustine, “an unjust law is no law at all.” This quote sums up the whole letter and its purpose; laws should be just for all and that when it is not it is man’s job to seek justice, peacefully. Just as peacefully he had done with the non-violent protest.

His emotional appeal begins when he stated: “The nations of Asia and Africa are moving with jet like speed toward gaining political independence, but we still creep at horse-and-buggy pace toward gaining a cup of coffee at a lunch counter.” And his emotional appeal continues and gets more effective when he describes the suffering life of black people who are suffering from racism and injustice:” when you take a country-cross drive and find it necessary to sleep night after night in the corner of an automobile because no hotel would accept you; when you are humiliated day in and day out, you are by nagging signs reading ‘white’ and ‘colored’”. This makes people want to join his case and makes his followers more determined about protesting against racial injustice.
