The basset hound is a short floppy eared little dog. They are as you can tell by the name a breed of hound dog. They are up to 1 foot and 2 inches tall at the shoulder. They usually weight from 50 to 65 pounds. There lifespan is 10 to 12 years.

Basset hounds are known as the hush puppy dogs. With there placid personality and short started but noble appearance the dog is a popular family companion. They are known as scent hounds. There short leg appearance is the result of a form of dawfism called andoclplasa. The basset have smooth short hard textured coats which is easy to take care of. The basset was originally breed to be a hunting dog most of the features they have served an important purpose like there long low set ears that drag on the ground and pick up scents all while there loose skin around their heads forms wrinkles future captures the scent of what they are tracking. The hound id raturter lazy and calm when at home. They are loyal to their people. When left alone for long periods of time they will howl and become destructive . there distinctive bark is loud and travels long distance.

The basset hound are very hearty eaters. But because they aren't very active in the house they can gain weight quickly and become obese. Which causes leg and back problems so you have to make sure they get enough exercise which isn't very hard because they have a great deal of endurance and love taking long walks.when walking them make sure they are on a leash because if they pick up a scent and want to follow it they will. But then if they do run off you will be able to catch them because of there short legs which make them slower and easy for hunters to follow on foot. Their tails are long and stand straight upward with a white tip at the end which helps you find them when they are in tall grass.
