Origin - The Maine Coon is a natural breed, however currently the actual origin of the Main Coon is still underway. The "myth" of the Maine Coon coming about from the mating of raccoon and domestic cat is amongst the most popular. Although this is genetically and scientifically impossible to achieve, it first came about to be believed due to its unique brown raccoon-like markings and big bushy tail. "Maine Shags" were the name given to those that had markings any other color besides the brown coat. Theory of Maine Coons coming about from Viking's bringing these animals over into North America has been one of many popular theories. However, the most common theory is that of Marie Antoinette. Many believe when she tried to escape to North America, but did not succeed, she had left her long-haired cat on board, which then came to North America and bred …show more content…
with the common short haired breed, thus bringing about the descendant Maine Coon breed. All in all, the Main Coon's origin has not yet been factually stated, but one thing is to be said for sure it is not a mix of raccoon and domestic cat. The origin and history of this breed has become a world wide curiosity. The Maine Coon is America's first indigenous show cat which was first shown in Boston in 1878.
It is considered to be ranked second most popular breed of cat, next to the Persian. It is recognized in the Cat Fancier's Association breed registry, and recognized by the International Cat Association. appearance. Appearance - The Maine Coon has a very distinctive head and body shape. They have broad chests, and large round eyes which give them their excellent eye-sight. Their coats are very glossy, and tend to be much longer around the stomach area, and shorter on their backs which is said to be for protection of harsh climate. Their ears resemble those of a Lynx - large, heavily coated for warmth and point at the top and are wide at the base. They have large paws that are also believed to serve as a barrier from snow. They have long muzzles which aid in easily grasping prey and lapping water from streams and puddles. Their markings are often brown, resembling that distinctive trait of a raccoon, along with their super fluffy bushy tails an textured coat. Distinctive Characteristic - Maine Coon's have a slow development, maintaining their kitten-like appearance for up to 3-4 years. Their coats are glossy, and are actually water-resistant unlike that of any other cat breed. Although they are known for their super fluffy outer appearance, the upkeep of a Main Coon is said to be relatively easy - rarely needing more than 1 brushing a week. This breed has a very distinctive chirp that is often used when playing with other animals or their owners. These cats can reach up to 18 pounds, females fall in the range of 9-12 pounds and males being 13-18, much of their weight being muscle. 3 inches of their overall size measurement is due to their coats. Maine Coons are highly people orientated and are not overly dependent. They love to play and can actually learn to fetch, and look forward to play time with their owners. Veterinary Notes - The Maine Coon is prone to Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy which is a form of heart disease. There are DNA tests which can help identify those that carry the mutation that causes this disease. This breed is also prone to kidney disease which results in a very slow renal failure. One very common health complication is Spinal Muscular Atrophy, which affects the skeletal muscle, tests can be done to detect early stages in kittens. When people are looking for a good dog to own, most generally want the quality of loyalty. Loyalty is one of its most dominant characteristics in a Heeler, as it is very faithful to one master or a family (Viki). My family owned its first Blue Heeler when I was a baby, and now it is the only breed of dog we buy. The last Heeler my family had was named Steel. Steel was a dependable dog that protected my siblings
The sabertooth cat, also known by its scientific name Smilodon Fatalis, is considered a true form fossil. A fossil is considered a true form fossil when scientists recover fossils of the actual animal or animal part. These bones were oftentimes subjected to physical processes while still on the surface. These processes include heat, cold, wind and rain.
Pit bulls are Good Pets Don't judge a book by its cover. Over the years, pit bulls have gotten a bad reputation. It is true that there have been a lot of injuries, but have there been just as many injuries from other breeds of dogs. I think that if you raised them in a loving environment, trained them properly, and if the media stopped reporting injuries, this breed of dog would be more accepted by the public. Proving that pit bulls get the short end of the stick and can make great pets.
Are these dogs misunderstood? In reality a dog is a reflection of its human, they see you as a pack leader they are who you raise them to be no matter the breed. If you neglect your puppy by chaining them up outside their whole life or keep them in
Transition: Ferrets may not be for everyone, although they are becoming the most popular pet next to cats and dogs, prior knowledge before acquiring a ferret is absolutely crucial.

Why can’t we shoot/trap the American River Otter? It is a animal with a very expensive fur. Their fur is the most dense fur on earth, for example, they have about one million hairs per square inch on their fur, which is because they have no blubber to keep themselves warm. Some cool facts about the otter are, that they can live their whole lives without getting out of the water. In other words, it does not get tired of swimming. Some reasons why we want to get rid of them are; the otter has been eating all the fish we like to catch. Some examples are, Crayfish, Salmon, and Trout. Another reason is the Otter has been eating all the water fowl. Some cool waterfowl are, Geese, Ducks, and their eggs. Reason
A muskrat is known for it’s black-ish brown color but muskrats can also be black, white, silver, and tan. A muskrat also has a long scaly tail, that is almost half its body length, which is 22-25 inches. This scaly tail is the main source of power when swimming. A typical muskrat normally weighs about 1.3-4.4 pounds. They also have slightly webbed feet to help them swim easily. On top of that muskrats have two layers thick fur that almost seems like wool to protect them from cold water. A muskrat has a very compact body, with a small head and small ears to make it easier for them to get around quickly while in water.
all puffins mostly eat small sea animals, such as sand eels, herring, hake and capelin. Puffin diets vary from colony to colony because of the variety of fish around the breeding islands. During winter puffins may also eat crustaceans, but their preferred food is fish. For most of the year, Atlantic puffins live on the open ocean, with a range spanning from the eastern coast of Canada and the northern United States to the western coast of Europe and northern Russia. 60% of the world's puffins live near Iceland. Puffins are specially adapted to living on the open
In the wild, identification would not be an issue as the cats inhabit different continents - the jaguar is the only member of the panthera family to be found in the Americas and its is by far the biggest cat on the continent. The Jaguars range, which once spanned from the southern states of the USA down to the tip of South America, now centres on the north and central parts of the South American continent. The jaguar is predominantly a forest dweller with the highest population densities centring on the lowland rain forests of the Amazon Basin - dry woodland and grassland also serve as suitable terrain, although the cat is rarely found in areas above 8000 feet.
Gopher tortoise are ectotherms that can mostly be found in the southeastern parts of the United States because of the sunnier weather in that area. They are known for digging burrows underground that can be 12 meters long and 3 meters deep. Many species live with the gopher tortoise in the burrows that they make for protection against fire, predators and also for warmth during the cold nights and to stay cool in the hot days. Species that lives with the gopher tortoise includes: rabbits, burrowing owls, mouse, frogs and many different types of small insects. Since the gopher tortoise are considered as threatened species, it has become very important to protect them as the burrows that they dig helps to increase the diversity of species in the area. There are also many causes that has led to them becoming threatened such as their low reproduction rate, loss of habitat due to urbanization and the predators that prey on their eggs and young hatchlings. Because the gopher tortoise can only lay up to 8 eggs in one year, protecting the eggs from predators like coyotes or raccoons is crucial for their future population. Also, protecting the young hatchlings is just as important because they are still
Lontra candensis, river otters, use their pheromones in a behavior commonly referred to as scent marking. River otters are semi-aquatic, carnivorous mammals that live mainly in inland waterways, ponds, and lakes. They are most well-known for their playful antics, and they can be observed playing in their natural habitats throughout North America.1 Scent marking is a behavior that has been observed in several different animal species, particularly mammals, but for otters it is very strange. Otters are semi-aquatic, and aquatic animals usually do not partake in this behavior. There are many different hypotheses as to why otters demonstrate this behavior.
...kat as you may have noticed by now is not actually a cat. It is a member of the mongoose family. All mongooses are almost the same, the only main difference is where they live and how they have adapted to that environment. The main types of mongooses are: the mongoose, the weasle, the squirrel, and civets and genets. Mongooses live in Asia, Africa, and Europe, Mongooses are also much bigger than a meerkat, but not as smart. Weasels live all over the world except in islands and polar regions. Weasels are a little bit smaller than meerkats, but much more vulnerable. They dont have burrow systems, sharp claws, live in groups or any of the smarts of a meerkat. Squirrels can range from one-seventh of the weight of a meerkat to seven times bigger than a meerkat depending on the breed. They live in almost every continent except antarctica, and nest in woodlands or plains.
