The Bahamas
The Bahamas is full of a vast array of inimitable little islands,
populated by the laid back people of the Caribbean. Great Exuma is one
of these, a place of warm tranquillity and relaxation, a place where
peace can be found. A minute number of people inhabit the 90 mile
stretch of land where you will find an amazing variety of wildlife.
The majority of untouched island is covered by jungle-like
surroundings known as the mangrove, its inhabitants being deadly
scorpions and snakes, roofed by the leaves under which poisonous
skull-spiders shelter.
The vast green mangrove covering the island surrounds a small quiet
town where the few inhabitants of this unique part of the world will
be found. The locals are friendly people, mainly running small
restaurants or fishing businesses, giving them enough money to live
freely. The blasé approach to life of a Caribbean person portrays a
world with no sense of time or schedule, no strain to fulfil ambition,
a world that is barely recognized in today’s modern corporate world
that is so full of worry and responsibility. The simplicity of life
that Great Exuma radiates is what makes it so attractive compared to
the demanding, dull and taxing environment we live in ourselves.
The sea that surrounds any Caribbean island is what could hold you
there forever. The changing tides of the crystal clear ocean allow for
you to walk miles out to the next island if you desire or to swim in
the warmth of a matchless environment occupied by gracious aquatic
creatures. As you walk into the blue sea off the white sandy beaches,
streams of glorious colours fly beneath you. As you dive under water...
... middle of paper ...
...xuma will provide you with the environment, and the
people to help you do whatever your mind and body desires. It really
is an experienced that must be lived by you, as there is no other
place like this with such glazing warmth of the sun everyday,
encountered by the soothing ocean at your doorstep. If you’re sitting
reading this now and are even slightly interested, I’ll leave you with
this…your on a sandy white beach under the shade of a hanging palm
tree, as you gaze into the vast clear sea in complete peace with an
ice cold drink in your hand. The sun begins to fall laying a golden
red stream of colours on the horizon. As the sun slowly cascades from
the sky, you feel an immense peace within you. You now realise you
have been gazing at the vibrant sunset for hours and soon you will
awake to another day in paradise.

The United States interest in Haiti, as mentioned above, began a huge increase in the first decade of the twentieth century. The extent of U. S. economic penetration was not as great as that of France and Germany, but by 1910 it controlled sixty percent of Haiti’s import industry. Unfortunately, the Haitian banking system did not follow this path and was, at this time, "perilously close to domination by European interests." (Langley, 1982, 70) In an effort to gain more control over Haitian economic affairs, the United States engaged in a battle with France and Germany over the Banque Nationale. Two banks from the U. S. attempted to obtain control of the bank but lost out to a German bank, which proceeded to ally itself with the Banque’s French managers in an effort to acquire domination. But the United States protested the exclusion of American banks so forcefully that the French and Germans folded and agreed to let the two American banks have a fifty percent share in the Banque Nationale. With a foot in the door, the Americans essentially took control of the Banque’s management. In doing so they gained much influence over the Haitian government executives, who relied on the Banque to cover monthly expenses. This would prove to be a huge asset in terms of fulfilling American interests in Haiti in the future.

From Aruba’s discovery at the end of the thirteenth century to present-day, its history is filled with change. Its changing possession and the three economic booms that it experienced form the outline of thousands of years. The changes the island has gone through are truly remarkable, and it is unbelievable that the island that now seems to be saturated with tourism was once a desolate landscape with little agricultural promise and economic hope. Unfortunately Aruba’s history is lacking documentation, but it is undisputable that even before the island was claimed, there were inhabitants on the island that would soon be considered the first chapter of Aruba’s history.
