The automotive industry is dominated by a few key players. Kallstrom explains, “The top five players have a significant 49% share of the global automobile market. This share decreased by 5.1% in the 15-year period from 1998 to 2013. Smaller companies slowly took the major automotive companies’ share away. In terms of vehicles produced, General Motors (GM), Ford (F), Volkswagen, and Toyota (TM) are still featured on the top five list.” It is important to note that Hyundai comes in at number five.

Air pollution by definition is foreign particles in the air that do not belong there. Several creep worthy pollutants that come from cars are: hydrocarbons from a car 's exhaust ( a toxic compound of hydrogen and carbon, nitrogen oxides, particle matter,when the carbon in fuel doesn 't burn completely. These pollutants have been linked to be contributing to heart disease, potential premature babies, birth defects, eye irritation, and cancer. Scientists believe air pollutants can also lead to global warming. (Brinson, n.d., p3)

According to Brinson, “Although the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) declared cars "mobile sources" of pollution, they aren’t the only culprits. Big trucks, bulldozers, ships and boats, trains and even snow-blower 's pollute the air. According to the EPA, motor vehicles collectively cause 75 percent of carbon monoxide pollution in the U.S. The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) estimates that on-road vehicles cause one-third of the air pollution that produces smog in the U.S., and transportation causes 27 percent of greenhouse gas emissions.
