Art by definition is the conscious production or arrangement of sounds, colors, forms, movements, or other elements in a manner that affects the sense of beauty, specifically the production of the beautiful in a graphic or plastic medium. Whether it was shown visually or musically, the arts of the twenties were reflective of the time period. Even in books, the extravagance that people lived in was evident.
The music of the twenties was on the opposite end of the spectrum from the music that had been its predecessor. With a quicker tempo, dynamics different then anything before it, dances that were of the youth and viewed as taboo, and powered by brass and rhythm instruments , jazz had become a mainstream for the youth of the twenties (Handley). In stark contrast of the Beethoven and the “usual” waltzes that people danced to, jazz was in your face and frowned down upon. According to the older generation, and quoted in the New York American, “Moral disaster is coming to hundreds of young American girls through the pathological, nerve-irritating, sex-exciting music of jazz orchestras" (Ward, Burns). In the 1920s, Jazz and Blues became very popular. Singers and musicians like Fat Waller, "Jelly Roll' Morton, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Lucille Bogan could be heard world wide. Bing Crosby, Annette Hanshaw, Al Jolson, Maria Anderson and George Gershwin were also making in big in the music world.
George Gershwin composed some of the most noticeable blues pieces of the nineteen twenties. Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris, and Piano Concerto in F, Rhapsody No. 2. Louis Armstrong, by far the king of the trumpet is the poster boy for pure jazz. With his revolutionary playing, he was able to break the trend of the typical “Dixieland” jazz music with his solos alone.
During the nineteen twenties films were becoming more popular, creating five major studios and three minor studios (“Films History of The 1920s.”) The five major studios, some of which are still around today, were: Warner Brothers, Paramount Pictures (originally named Famous players), Mutual Film Corporation, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and Fox Film Corporation. Warner Bros. Pictures, incorporated in 1923 by the brothers (Jack, Harry, Albert, and Sam); the studio's first principal asset was Rin Tin Tin. MGM, first named Metro-Goldwyn Pictures - in 1924 formed from the merger of Metro Pictures (1915), Samuel Goldwyn Picture Corporation (1917), and the Louis B. Mayer Pictures Company (1918).
All types of music require musicians. In the H.R (Harlem Renaissance), there were many who contributed to this new style of music known as jazz. These musicians all have their own style and form. Each of these styles has in some way influenced the evolution of jazz. Louis “Sachmo” Armstrong is recognized as the most famous trumpet player of this time. His “hot bop” style was heard in places like the Cotton Club and the Apollo Theatre. Everyone from all over the country would come to see him. Armstrong recorded such works as I’m in the Mood for Love, and You Rascal you (http://library.thinkquest.org/26656/english/music.html). Another famous person during this era was Coleman Hawkins, a saxophone player. Hawkins is recognized as the first great saxophonists of Jazz. His most famous work was a piece named Body and Soul (http://library.thinkquest.org…). Hawkins has also recorded with artists such as Thelonious Monk and Duke Ellington. Other people such as Bessie Smith, Josephine Baker, Duke Ellington, and “Dizzie” Gillespie have also made many contributions to the development of Jazz.
Jazz became popular during the 1920s and was developed from Blues and Ragtime. The 1920s was nicknamed The Roaring Twenties or the Jazz age because it was a time where many traditonal moral standards were not followed and people indulged in new danicng and dressing styles. Jazz is still important to us today but according to Nielsen‘s 2014 Year-End Report, jazz is continuing to fall out of favor with American listeners and has tied with classical music as the least-consumed music in the U.S., after children’s
If I were to ask you what is art, and how can one find it? What would you say? Well if it were me being asked those question, I would simply say that art to me is a form of a picture; a visual painting or model of some design and it could be found all among us. You may define it differently only because art could be defined in many ways. I could simply say that art to me is a form of a picture; a visual painting or model of some design. Well according to an article written by Shelley Esaak, an art history expert she mentioned that art has a way of stimulating different parts of our brains to make us laugh or incite us to riot, with a whole gamut of emotions in between. She also mentioned that art gives us a way to be creative and express ourselves. [1]
Also known as the Jazz Age and the Roaring Twenties, the American people felt that they deserved to have some fun in order to forget the emotional toll and social scars left from the war. The Jazz Age was appropriately named due to the illegal activities and good times, which included music, parties, and flapper girls. Jazz was a new style of music that originated out of the New Orleans area, where one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time – Louis Armstrong – began his career. The energy of jazz was a very new and almost uncomfortable style for the very traditional, rigid family of the 1920s. Young people in particular seemed to enjoy this new music the most, as it made them feel carefree. The energy of jazz was symbolic of the era’s trans...
As the United States entered the 1920's it was not as unified as one might think. Not one, but two societies existed. The Black society, whose ancestors had been oppressed throughout the ages, and the White society, the oppressors of these men and women. After emancipation the Whites no longer needed the Blacks, but were forced to live with them. The Blacks despised the Whites, but even so they became more like them in every way. Even though these two races had grown so similar over the past century and a half, they were still greatly diversified. One aspect of this great diversity was the difference in music trends. The White society was still in love with the European classical music. The Blacks on the other hand had created something all their own. Jazz, Blues, and Ragtime originated in New Orleans in the 19th century, but by the 1920's it had become famous throughout America. The Whites tried to suppress the Blacks with new laws, but the power of this strengthened race was too great. The Negro music of the 20th century had a huge affect ...
Life wasn’t always so bad, or at least that’s what they told me. From what I remember of my child hoods great memories my family speaks so highly of, if there were any at all, are all clouded in my mind by the what I can remember my life being. At times I find myself going thru old pictures of when I was a child and think to myself. Why can't I remember this day? I looked to be a happy healthy baby then my heart turns in a cold way. Growing up to a parent addicted to drugs and alcohol is no way for a child to be raised. I had to grow up at an early age and didn’t truly get to experience life the way a child should. My family tells me Marquise you were so loved by so many people and your Mom tried to do the best she
Though there were many aspects that made up the 1920s culture, one of the most important was the music. Jazz was the major form of music that was starting to make its way through the seams. This style of music had been around for many years, starting in New Orleans. According the book Popular Culture: 1929-1929, Jane Bingham states that a group of talented African Americans started this type of music, and their inspiration came from songs their ancestors used to play while they were working on cotton plantations (Bingham 8). Jazz was originally played in underground speakeasies and nightclubs. However, it was none other than F. Scott Fitzgerald that jump-started this musical journey through his novel, The Great Gatsby. In the Encyclopedia of Jazz, James Ciment writes that Jazz was the musical anthem for the carefree, modern spirit of these times (Ciment 307). With Jazz being so upbeat, fast paced, and rhythmic, it led to the rebellion of many young men and women. For instance, in the Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays Gatsby’s parties as being jammed packed full of people dancing to jazz music and having the time of ...
Jazz music prospered in the 1940’s and 1950’s. Jazz was created by African Americans to represent pain and suffering and also represented the adversity that racial tension brought. (Scholastic) African American performers like Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie “Bird” Parker came to be recognized for their ability to overcome “race relati...
Now a days, many believe that jazz is not that important of music genre, but with our history, jazz plays a big role. “Jazz does not belong to one race or culture, but it is a gift that America has given to the world.”, quoted by Ahmad Alaadeen. Jazz in the 1920’s opened the eyes of whites and invited them into African American culture; it evolved Americans to where we are today since it brought a change to the music scene, an acceptance of African Americans, and a change of lifestyles.
Jazz originated in new orleans. Jazz is so important because it inspires our music today. This was also called the jazz age. The harlem renaissance gave us new music such as jazz, white jazz and blues. White jazz is a different version of the original african american style of jazz. “Race records” were for african americans and recorded by african americans. White jazz was “appropriated” jazz music. Jazz in the 1920’s was “over sexualized.” companies however mostly recorded white jazz artists. Jazz in the 1920’s was called loud and syncopated. Jazz was mostly only played in black neighborhoods. Louis armstrong is most likely the most famous and influential figure to come out of this era. In the 1920’s clubs were segregated so jazz would only be played where african americans were allowed. Jazz was often played at speakeasies. Speakeasies were places where people got together and illegally drank. Toward the end of the decade radio went from being an expensive novelty to a major purveyor of inexpensive entertainment where jazz and white jazz
You didn’t deserve seeing me in chaos. You didn’t deserve to be affected by my negativity and pain. It hurt me even more, knowing what I put you through. How I changed into a cruel monster. I believed I was a good person when I was younger, but sadness and trauma create a new individual unworthy of love. I can’t face the way you looked at me—afraid, helpless, hopeless. The way I stared back into your eyes, broken.
“Mr. McClellan, you will be late if you do not leave in forty six seconds,” rang out the house’s helpful voice. We do this every morning and I’m never late, I thought, it’s starting to get annoying. After hastily kissing my wife’s cheek, I stepped into the cylindrical tube that teleports me to work every morning. This morning had been like any other. Log my fingerprint to show that I arrived at work. Grab a coffee and get looked at strangely because I don't eat Soylent. The only different thing was the secret service agent standing front of the CIA’s seal. It was seal next to my office door. I could tell he, I believe his name is Jim, was waiting to talk to me. I walked closer and as Jim leaned in, his breath warm on my neck, and told me the
At the ripe age of eight I was left alone without a dad, at the ripe age of eight I got counseling at my public school, at the ripe age of eight I was left with an alcoholic mother and an autistic brother. Life with you was like the world stop spinning, me and Dawson, my brother, lived with you full-time and never saw our mom except when you made us, until you got sick. Some say “You’re a strong girl for raising your brother and dealing with your mother,” but to think without you I wouldn’t be strong. Your stage four, be on your own in two months, brain cancer made me who I am. I am not the naïve little girl you use to know, you leaving me made me realize I want a better life for myself than the one I was in. As soon as you left, I became the mother figure Dawson never had and that he so
“… Without a continuous bond uniting men, without a continuous current of shared thought, … there could be no living worthy of being called human.” Richard Wright spoke these words in his autobiography Black Boy. He, as well as many other black Americans have displayed exmplemtory talent in the arts. As a matter of fact, blacks have contributed their talents to the arts, for many years, especially in the areas of painting, literature, and music.
Art can be defined in many ways by an individual. One can say that any creative output by a person is considered art. Others contend that art must conform to a societal standard and the basis of the creation should be understood by most intellectual people. For example, some contend that computer-generated images, such as fractals, are not art due to the large role played by a computer. E.O. Wilson states “the exclusive role of the arts is to intensify aesthetic and emotional response. Works of art communicate feeling directly from mind to mind, with no intent to explain why the impact occurs” (218). A simple definition may be that art is the physical expression of the ideals formed by the mind.
