In the book the Achievement Habit author Bernard Roth talks about one’s need for success. According to the author, there is nothing standing in your way of getting success except: “bullshit prettied up and called an excuse”. While many people who subscribe to Roth’s ideas that you just need to pull yourself up by your bootstraps and get to work, anyone who has struggled with depression can attested that what Roth is peddling itself is a lot easier said than done. What is depression, though? If left without help, what might the result be? How do you deal with it so that you can at least function?

To Roth, Justin’s death has less to do with the need to feel heard while depressed and more to do with him not having a “positive attitude” and not “learning from his mistakes.” Roth’s thoughts on this can be found in his book The Achievement Habit. Roth talks about learning from failure and how you just need to do and not try when failure occurs. That is a statement that yet again is easier said then done. While these vices work at first, the high will quickly fade and all you will be left with is another problem you can’t fix. One of the hardest thing to fight is the urge to just let the depression take control to the point that it almost becomes a metaphorical best friend. This isn’t easy. Depression easily can put itself in the place of a best friend, as it can become sole constant in a life and depression can become the

Without any support systems during depression are like flowers without water. How are they going to grow and become a beautiful creation of god without its necessities? It’s almost impossible to succeed. In “The Perks of Being A Wallflower”, Charlie went into high school without a friend. He made a friend named Patrick, who during difficult times, was there for him. Sam, another friend that was introduced to him, developed a crush for. Patrick though, was the one who was there for Charlie when he needed something and was going through a rough time. This was not as easy a read for me. I suppose I am a victim of my generational upbringing, in that, I feel the need to be informed in an entertaining manner. This book has good information, but I had to continually check my focus. Those times when I was truly drawn in were the times when the writer was relating back to a story from his life or others and how it worked in to the particular habit he was teaching at that time. That being said, the following areas are where I believe I can use to make myself and my team better.

For Locke, knowledge is composed of our perception of the differences or similarities between two ideas. In pondering two ideas, we either decide that we accept them or that they intersect, or, alternatively they are anathema to one another and we reject them. In this rejection or acceptance of ideas, we gain knowledge; therefore, knowledge is an active and evolving process that is related to our perceptions. Locke provides the example that we perceive the idea that “white is not black,” which leads us to the knowledge of what white is and what black is.
