It hasn’t been even ten years and here we are all over again. For some reason the human race can not wait to be extinct, and we are already on track for another “Y2K” scare. Every time you turn on the History Channel there is another new program telling us how the world as we know it will end in a little more than two years, sending every viewer into a state of shock, and turning every Tivo into a doomsday prediction recorder from then on out. Now, I am all about putting out as much information about our everyday world out there for all to bear witness, but I also believe in unbiased coverage of events. For some reason television channels, the internet, and even movies have been telling the public our lives are soon to end, and I have yet to see one special or segment telling us this is not the case, when in fact, there is much evidence out there to contradict these theories. There are doomsday predictions crediting the speaking of Nostradamus’ predictions, the Mayan calendar ending, solar flares, and even a reptilian planet by the name of Nuburu, any of which are allegedly going to kill us all. Is it right to play of the public’s fear of death in order to make financial gains? Is it right to endanger the lives of thousands of people and plant a seed in everyone’s brain from which chaos could possibly arise from? This is an outrage, and this is coming from a once supporter of these theories.
It is hard to apply any specific ethical theory to this topic, as most ethical theories seem to side with the reasoning of the protagonist. Utilitarianism can be applied in the inverse to this ethical dilemma. Possibly, society can be looked at as benefiting from all this 2012 nonsense. It provides a fresh form of entertainment to the public...

And finally, my answer to all this bullshit. Nostradamus is a crock, Niburu is a crock, and as for the Mayan calendar ending on 2012 Dec. 25th, that would be correct. Their calendar does end every 25800 years. For your information, we are currently in the age of Pisces (hence the Jesus fish on the back of everyone’s cars, Pisces was the fisherman). The calendar is based on the constellations. On Dec. 25th we enter the new age of Aquarius. So yes, the calendar does end on this date, but ours ends every year as well, Dec. 31st, and we’re drink to celebrate a new day and new year, January 1st. So kick back, relax, and bring in the new age with a glass of champagne, and watch the crazies sew their eyes shut.
In The Influencing Machine, Gladstone argues that the media focuses on putting out news that remotely threatens viewers. In the text she states, “emphasizing bad news is good business…world [seems] more dangerous…actually is.” It is good business considering that it keeps the audience on their toes and makes them think about what is going on. The article “When The Media Is The Disaster,” by Rebecca Solnit discusses the accounts that took place with the media and the victims during the Haitian earthquake. People were trapped alive struggling to survive. Many of these victims became so desperate for food and water they began to steal. The mass media interpreted their actions as stealing, characterizing them as “looters”. Solnit does not agree with the media labeling victims as “looters” because victims are being portrayed as something they are not. In paragraph 7 Solnit says “the pictures do convey desperation, but they don't convey crime”. she believes victims should take any alternatives to sustain human life even if that means stealing. As she furthermore discusses that the reason laws in the United States are being broken is due to necessity. Solnit does not agree with the victims being characterized as “looters” because they did this in order to survive.
There has been many predictions about when the world will end or how it would end but no one believes it and no one knew whether they true or not. This time is true and you have to believe it. Now there are more and more information to support Mayans' prediction. According to the Mayan's calculation the longest calender only goes up to December 21,2009. It takes a long time in order for a calendar to go through one cycle. The longest cycle takes 26,000 years and the shortest cycle takes 5,000 years. Now our cycle is about to end, and once this cycle is complete everything will start over again.
The discrepancies in media coverage in coverage of female and children athletics have large gaps, but are gaining momentum in sharing equality. Major athletic leagues such as the NBA and FIFA World Cup have wide gaps in marketing and ratings for their male and female athletes. Children are future athletes and superstars, but as funding and coverage in athletics catering to the males, women are breaking the barriers to be in the spotlight of sport. Both gender contribute equally to athletics, and challenge the each other to accept new ideas and change. The sports world that has a single gender dominating the media is unjust. Society does not want to bored, we need change in sports entertainment to cater to all. Not all parents and teachers are available to educate our children about the concepts of sharing and teamwork, our children are growing up learning key concepts through media. I will discuss these concepts and how they intertwine.

The fear of the world ending has for a long time, even though the thought isn’t always at the top of our mind nor our biggest problem but it is still a worry that affects many. Whether it's an asteroid hitting earth, a zombie apocalypse, or a killer plague, we often think about what we would do when the world ends. We think about our families and our daily lives taking a turn for the worst. Some people even suffer daily from the fear that the world might end at any second and it's known as the doomsday phobia. Many times we hear things through media and don’t actually listen to what they may say. When people hear something through mass media, they don’t realize that there is a person’s point of view stated in the story. And many times what people don’t see is that there is no such thing as an objective point of view. This is called Rhetoric; when someone states their point of view using words that either sway an audiences opinions one way or another. Rhetoric can be found in many places such as a T.V add or a commercial, magazine articles and advertisements, the news, and even radio commercials.
The world we live in is one of innovation and growth. Technology has expanded and grown significantly over the past several decades. At the forefront of this evolution is the media. Over the past several hundred years, the media has seen substantial growth. While print media has been a staple of society for many decades, the internet and other forms of media have revolutionized the way we receive information. These range from social media, to television, to movies, among others. Yet, in regards to climate change, the focus is on television. While much of what people see and hear is accurate and valid, one must recognize the underlying purpose of all media outlets; the media aims to convey a message to attract viewers. For many unfamiliar to academic settings, the media represents the primary source of information. The media can use various techniques such as framing in order to convey their message. By definition, framing is the media’s attempt to draw the public’s attention to certain issues. The media decides the stance they want to take, and then structures it in an attempt to influence the perception of the news. Rather than telling the audience what to think about, it tells the audience how to think about it.
As the clock hit 6:00 PM, on December 21, 2012, while waiting on tables at my job, I found myself holding hands and praying with complete strangers. Rumor had it that this was the end of the world, and life as we knew it. As Gregory Rodriguez stated in his article, “Truth Is In The Ear Of The Beholder”, “Rumors and conspiracy theories can only thrive in the minds of people who are predisposed to believe them,” (Rodriguez, 347). My coworkers, customers and I, must have all fallen for the rumor seeing as we were all in a panic as we called our loved ones, to tell them goodbye. Our digital lifestyle has undeniably accelerated the spread of rumors by using outlets such as Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook.
The Hidden Relationship Between Government and Media Rather than being a neutral conduit for the communication of information, the U.S. media plays an intricate role in shaping and controlling political opinions. Media is extremely powerful in the sense that without an adequate functioning media, it is virtually impossible for a sophisticated social structure like the U.S. Government to exist. Henceforth, all known sophisticated social structures, have always been dependent upon the media’s ability to socialize. The U.S. government generally exploits the media, often times manipulating the enormous power of the printed word. In times of War, the media plays a crucial role both in reporting, monitoring and giving updates. During the Vietnam War of 1955-1975, the American press played crucial roles of reporting until it ended up shifting its tone under the influence of occurrence of some events like the Tet Offensive, the My Lai Massacre, the bombing of Cambodia and leaking of Pentagon papers resulting into lack of trust in the press (Knightly 1975).
