William Shakespeare’s name has power in it because of his marvelous creations. Shakespeare is one of the most famous sonnet writers so does his sonnet 73. “That Time Of The Year Thou Mayst In Me Behold” is written in his later time when he finished writing many of his major plays. Shakespeare frequently uses a rhyme scheme in the sonnets that follows a pattern of ABAB CDCD EFEF GG. This Shakespearean pattern divides poem in to three distinct quatrains that can develop a separate metaphor for each, followed by a closing couplet that sums up what has discussed through the previous parts. Therefore, Shakespeare utilizes visual images, symbols, and metrical devices like metaphor and conveys the theme by dividing it into three quatrains and summing up in the last couplet.
First four lines depict the loneliness of aging with the image of season’s change. According to the Shakespeare’s sonnet in Literature written by X.J. Kennedy and Dana Gioia, the second line of “yellow leaves… do hang upon those boughs” (787) indicates that the setting is late autumn. The speaker also mentions the “bare ruin’d choirs, where late the sweet birds sang” (787) to emphasize the loss of energy since the choir at the church and bird’s song implies that speaker’s life was once grand and filled with glory. In addition, the image of yellow leaves that are barely hanging on the branches in the first quatrain somewhat resembles an old man’s half-bold hair, thus directly pointing to the theme of aging. In the last couplet, the teaching of valuing the youth when it is present strongly convinces readers with a well-developed sentence scale metaphors. In other words, if people can perceive their limitation and temporary existence in the Earth, they may learn to better love and appreciate what is given to them now. Interestingly, some people argue that the theme of this sonnet is a speaker asking his lover to understand his aging so that they can continue to love each other. However, the sonnet rather teaches young people to love and appreciate what is given to them and not to waste the time. After all, William Shakespeare never disappoints his readers with his works.
In “Sonnet,” Billy Collins satirizes the classical sonnet’s volume to illustrate love in only “.fourteen lines.” (1). Collins’s poem subsists as a “Sonnet,” though there exists many differences in it, countering the customarily conventional structure of a sonnet. Like Collins’s “Sonnet,” Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 130” also faces incongruities with the classic sonnet form as he satirizes the concept of ideal beauty that was largely a convention of writings and art during the Elizabethan era. Although these poems venture through different techniques to appear individually different from the classic sonnet, the theme of love makes the poems analogous.
The sonnets written by Shakespeare in the Elizabethan era were written to challenge the unrealistic view of women in the Petrarchan sonnets, and this is visible through Shakespeare’s use of the English Sonnet. In William Shakespeare’s poem “That time of year,” Shakespeare creates various pictures to describe the passing of time. Each metaphor provides a different way expressing death, and each way expressed shortens as the poem continues. The quickening of events provides a contrast to the deceleration of life. The sequence of time-associated metaphors contributes to the theme of realizing deaths inevitability and taking advantage of final moments by providing very distinct and vivid comparisons between the elapsing of time in life and the illustrations of consumption.In the first quatrain autumn is used as a metaphor. Therefore, because William Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 18” and Edmund Spenser’s “Sonnet 75” share the idea that love is sincere and eternal, they can be looked upon as similar in theme. However, although similar in theme, Shakespeare’s intent is portraying the true everlasting beauty of his love, which is already achieved, whereas Spenser concentrates more on trying to entice his desired love, remaining optimistic throughout the entire poem.

The majority of Elizabethan sonnets reflect two major themes: time and love. William Shakespeare, too, followed this convention, producing 154 sonnets, many of which deal with the usual theme of love. Because the concept of love is in itself so immense, Shakespeare found several ways to capture the essence of his passion. Therefore, in his poetry he explored various methods and used them to describe the emotions associated with his love for a mysterious "dark lady."
