Characters from the short stories show that one must be empathetic,loyal,and confident to survive hardships in life. Firstly from the story “Thank You Ma’am” the reader pursues a woman named Mrs.Jones who seems to be mean, but is a kind hearted person. She meets Roger, when he attempts to steal her purse on the street in New York. With passion to help Roger, Mrs.Jones takes him to her home without treating him like a criminal,feeds him and says “ I got a great mind to wash your face for you. Ain’t you got nobody home tell you to wash your face” (Hughes 73). She figures out Roger lives a poor life and goes through her tough past where she lived in poverty like Roger. Mrs.Jones proves that like all teens everyone is different and no one knows everything . In life, sometimes someone would not know something and it is one's job to be empathetic and teach them. Mrs.Jones empathy acts like a powerful guide for Roger to survive his hard times. Along with empathy, loyalty is a characteristic that is also needed to survive hardships. From the story “Savitri and Satyavan” the author starts off with the character Savitri a beautiful princess. She wishes to marry Satyavan a boy from a poor family. The King explains to Savitri that this boy has no money and asks her how she will live such a simple life. Without hesitation Savitri says to the King “ He is capable, honest, good and caring. This is what I respect and love him for” (Jaffrey 183). She still marries Satyavan even after knowing that he would die after a year. Savitri has unconditional love for Satyavan.She changes her lifestyle and eats fruit,roots,and leaves for Satyavan. Savitri’s loyalty made Satyavan equally love her. The author proves to the reader that when one is loyal to others in their hard times, they will be loyal back to the same person. Savitri’s loyalty helps Satyavan overcome his hard times.
