Testimony: Crises of Witnessing in Literature, Psychoanalysis, and History by Dori Laub Dori Laub, author of, "Testimony: Crises of Witnessing in Literature, Psychoanalysis, and History", discusses a concept of missed experiences referred to as the 'collapse of witnessing'. The 'collapse of witnessing' is the idea that a person can witness an event and yet at the same time not really witness it at all. Through the analysis of Laub's 'collapse of witnessing', a connection can be seen between St. Teresa and Mary Rowlandson. St. Teresa is a nun that devotes her life to God, while Mary Rowlandson is the wife of a minister that is taken captive by Indians. They both have missed experiences and/or situations of the 'collapse of witnessing'. A traumatic event that can not be understood, can not be mastered, and can not be incorporated in the social, often times also, can not be witnessed. This 'collapse of witness' can be seen in both The Life of Saint Teresa of Avila by Herself and The True History of the Captivity of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson; and the 'collapse of witness' can be used as a tool to connect these two trauma texts. According to Dori Laub there are, "three separate, distinct levels of witnessing" (Laub 75). These three levels are, "the level of being a witness to oneself within the experience; the level of being a witness to the testimonies of others; and the level of being a witness to the process of witnessing itself" (Laub 75). The 'collapse of witnessing' is how in relation to trauma, many times a person can not witness the event because the event is beyond the realm of the social. "The events [that] are remembered and seem to have been experienced in a way that [is] far beyond the normal capacity for recall" ... ... middle of paper ... ...ich she was originally from and the social from which she endured trauma for eleven weeks and five days. It is at this point that we can clearly see why there was a 'collapse of witness' to the process of witnessing and why Rowlandson chose and was forced to be a 'witness' on all levels. Both Rowlandson and Teresa are examples of the 'collapse of witnessing' but also of the eventual 'witnessing' of the traumatic events of their lives. It is important to be aware of the other concepts that tie into Teresa and Rowlandson's 'collapse of witnessing'. Latency and melancholia play a part in Teresa and Rowlandson's 'collapse of witnessing', respectively. These concepts intertwine with Laub's theory of 'collapse of witnessing' to show a clear connection between The Life of Saint Teresa of Avila by Herself and The True History of the Captivity of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson.
The narrative that Rowlandson wrote was originally titled “The Sovereignty & Goodness of God, Together with the Faithfulness of His Promise Displayed: Being a Narrative of the Captivity and Restauration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson Commended by her to all that Desire to Know the Lord’s Doings to, and Dealings with Her. Especially to her Dear Children and Relations.” In 1682, the title was dropped and republished the narrative under the title “Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson” which is best known as today. This book is separated into “removes.” The first three “removes” focus on her desperate efforts to care for her dying daughter. The rest of the “removes” focus on the difficulties she faced while being kidnapped and held captive.
When faced with a traumatic experience, one’s true nature reveals itself. The trauma forces those suffering from it to cope. How one copes is directly linked to their personality. Some will push everything away, while others will hold whatever they can close. Both of these coping mechanisms can be observed in the two short stories “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” by Katherine Anne Porter and “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner. In “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” and “A Rose for Emily,” the two protagonists prominent characteristics distinctly affect the way the protagonists copes when faced with trauma and the outcome of the short stories endings. To begin, Granny Weatherall is a prideful control freak. While, in contrast, Miss Emily is delusional and stubborn.

In Mary Rowlandson’s piece titled The Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson, she recounts her time being held captive by Native Americans. She describes the horrors of her period of captivity throughout the narrative. Rowlandson draws connections during her captivity between herself and God’s disciples, which helps to keep her hope alive through her torment. Rowlandson’s strong faith in Christianity is shown during the whole piece, even including quotes from the Bible. Rowlandson is a true and pure Puritan to the core in her writing and her everyday life. Throughout her poem, Rowlandson uses figurative language to help in the comparison of the bible to her situation. Christianity gave her hope throughout her darkest days while being held captive. Without her strong faith and belief in God, Rowlandson would not have survived her time as a captive.

...ip. The reign of Mary Rowlandson during this difficult phase in her life was truly extraordinary. It was a blessing in disguise because while she was a captive, she had nothing but God to rely on and Rowlandson got through it all. There were many themes present in this book but the one that stood out to me most was the one of reflection. In remove #20, towards the ending she says that she has pretty much gone back and forth from good and bad. From almost dying of starvation to being healthy or being with her family in one instance and in the next she was obligated to give in to her captives and walk a painful journey. It makes one think of the things we take for granted. But the element of surprise always strikes when we are at our most vulnerable. She had religion to cope with because the Bible and the never-ending stories in it were a source of comfort to her.
I felt angry, confused, and scared. I didn’t know who I could trust or where I could feel safe-- feelings that are overwhelming and utterly terrifying for a second grader. Post-incident, everyday events became obstacles that terrified me. Taking a shower or staying home alone seemed insurmountable. It was difficult to distract myself from the aftermath when the effects were so infiltrated within my daily life. I found comfort in school, which I considered a safe place. I discovered my love for words and became a voracious reader, where I rapidly progressed to reading levels far beyond that of my peers. That year I began the Harry Potter series, which transported me to worlds far different than my own. I could relate to the characters, many of whom had been hurt in one way or another. The Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center even held a Harry Potter camp throughout February break where children who had underwent similar pasts could attend. The essay Paralyzed Witnesses: The Murder They Heard was written by Stanley Milgram and Paul Hollander. In this essay, the authors describe in detail the responses of the witnesses during the murder of Kitty Genovese and the impact this case has of the ability for an individual to help people during a time of distress. The main idea of this essay was to analyze the reasons why the witnesses did not help during the murder. The internal and external conflicts were the main factors that influenced the witnesses did not help Genovese during her time of need.
Rowlandson writes, “The night before the letter came from the council, I could not rest, I was so full of fears and troubles, God many times leaving us most in the dark, when deliverance is nearest. Yea, at this time I could not rest night nor day” (137), Rowlandson remembers that it is only because of God she is in the predicament that she is and has been in, and now she is free to go home – no longer to be held captive. Now, if these Native Americans were such “barbarous creatures” and “ravenous beasts,” would Rowlandson even have the chance to go home? Rowlandson as well as the other captives were not treated top notch, they were not given enough food to fill their bellies, or enough water to keep the thirst away, no, but Mary was kept alive; however, Rowlandson took something bigger from the experience, she took away a closer relationship with God. Rowlandson writes, “Yet I see, when God calls a person to anything, and through never so many difficulties, yet He is fully able to carry them through and make them see, and they have been gainers thereby, “ and continues to go on and say “… we must rely on God himself, and our whole dependence must be upon him” (143), showing that her life was lying in no other than God’s

Most often is it human nature to blame our problems on something or someone else. For example, the cliché excuse of “my dog ate my homework.” It is very hard to accept our own faults but very easy to blame others for it. Similarly, Angela Vicario blames Santiago Nasar for taking her virginity, though most likely, he did not. On pages 46-47, of the novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Garcia Marquez, the narrator creates an overall mood of misery and brutality to show how bad situations can cause people to resort to blaming others for their own guilt.
I went through most of school reading those boring books that we all know about, and it was a serious struggle for me. When reading something you’re forced to, you don't find it quite enjoying. If you don’t enjoy it, you can forget what you’ve read, not get much out of the book, find it incomprehensible, and so on. Then out of nowhere in my life, I had discovered the first book that I honestly enjoyed. I can’t remember a whole lot about them, but i do remember the feeling of finding the first book I liked. The book was almost life changing it seemed. I would read it many times over and over again! These books, Choose Your Own Adventure series, were full of action and took me places! You directed where the story went, or ended by making choices for the main character. It was different every time you read it! It not only was good for reading, but also helped with being able to comprehend what I was reading, finding the theme of a book, and a lot of reading skills. I was finally an active reader! The primary theme of this story is guilt by force. She, the unnamed speaker, has been forced by whom or however to continue to have these devastations that she has been forever placed on her is a burden of guilt.
This kept me even more devoted to my reading habits and allowed me to pursue them through middle school when I made the jump from 300-400 page books to 700-800 page novels. Middle school was my era of being obsessed with fiction books. I loved books that were recreated through movies like Harry Potter or The Hunger Games just as much as I loved books that I could relate to. However, books with a relatable factor always tended to be my favorite. This was mainly because I loved the idea of living vicariously through someone 's life. One of my favorite series is the Clique series which is about a group of popular girls navigating through high school. I started this these books in elementary school and reread them all throughout high school and though I was reading about arbitrary things like fighting over boys or crazy holiday parties the entertainment from this series possessed me to find more pleasure books. At the same time, this entertainment buzz quickly turned from a consistent means to continue to strengthen my literacy to me lugging my book to every class and reading instead of paying attention.
