Severe panic attacks, intense fear or terror and inability to breathe are just some of the many symptoms of test anxiety. This anxiety is also known as the very severe fear of failure, which is often felt before, during or after taking an examination. To the majority of adults and teachers, they believe that test anxiety is only present in students because they do not pay attention or do not have any study habits at home. However, studies show that it is much more complex than people think. Test anxiety is present is a large number of students and the methods of standardized and contemporary teaching affect it negatively. “‘I can no longer cooperate with a testing regime that I believe is suffocating creativity and innovation in the classroom. We are not really educating our students anymore. We are merely teaching them to pass a test. This is wrong. Period’” (Strauss 11-14). The author of the article, Valerie Strauss, explains the troubles behind standardized testing and the problems that they cause within students. She portrays the standardized way of teaching as quite impotent, in addition to hindering creativity and innovative ideas throughout the classroom. By completely overpraising standardized and contemporary teaching methods, teachers have taught their students that it is more important to memorize something on a sheet of paper, than to be able to express their creative mind to the fullest extent. “The overemphasis on testing has led many teachers to eliminate projects and activities that provide students with an opportunity to be creative and imaginative, and scripted curriculum has become the norm in many classrooms” (Strauss 19-23). The overall development of criteria throughout a students school years must be well balanced, containing aspects of various different genres and topics. Despite this, many believe that instead of test anxiety being caused by the methods of teaching, the root of the fear can only be caused by the students themselves. “Test anxiety is one of the most important aspects of negative motivation and has direct debilitating effects on school performance [...] highly anxious children are more sensitive to failure and react more to evaluation [...]” (Roth 9). The author, Ashley Roth, states that maybe in fact it isn’t the teaching, it is the student’s habit’s mental condition that gives rise to increased anxiousness. Researchers said that if students are already accustomed to high levels of anxiety, they are going to experience a stronger sense of text anxiousness than others. However, many others believe that test anxiety has a direct relationship with a students personality and self evaluations, questioning the students’ study habits, self-esteem and locus of control. They explained that children who experience more anxiety, respond more harsh to teacher evaluation, comparing to students with records stating less test anxiousness. In addition, researchers also stated that there are too many factors to come to the decision that test anxiety is caused by the method of teaching used.
