Many people have various definitions of what a hero is, and who they can be. Many times when thinking of a hero, you may think of a fictional one, such as Superman or Spider-man. When I think of a hero, I think of someone who has made an extraordinary impact on the world, something that perfectly describes Terry Fox. Terry Fox is a heroic figure whose legacy shall never be forgotten. Terry was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma when he was only 18, and had to have his leg amputated, which caused him to decide to make a difference in the world. Terry would run almost 42 kilometers each day, in hopes of running all across Canada in a marathon he named the Marathon of Hope. His mission was to raise as much money as he could for cancer research …show more content…
I believe Terry Fox never realized what a huge impact his actions would have on generations to come. Terry Fox continues to inspire, and aspire people to take action and make a difference. I believe that Terry would have been thrilled if he knew about the amazing impact he has had, yet would still stay modest about it. He would be immensely proud, as although he did not finish his marathon, his path to freedom still continues today. Throughout Terry’s journey, he remained selfless and modest, thus I think this would continue as well. At the time, I think Terry thought of himself as someone who is just trying to make a change. He felt as if he is no different than anyone else, and would not let anything stop him. Terry Fox’s identity changed many times throughout his lifetime. I think he would say one point his identity was altered forever was once he was diagnosed with cancer. This was a tragic event which changed Terry’s aspect on the world from that moment on. Additionally, I think Terry’s identity would have changed once he realized what change he was making. His identity was now known to many others, but I think there was a point where Terry decided he was going to fight until the end, and that is what he did. Although I believe Terry eventually realized this, his identity in Canada’s perspective is that he is a hero. Terry Fox was such an incredible
When you think your average baseball player, what do you think of? The player usually has all of his arms, legs, and no physical disabilities. Anyone who plays baseball would think it is hard to imagine that a person born without a right arm is able to play the game and let only be able to be a pitcher. Jim Abbott faces all the odds and has ten-year career in the major leagues. Abbott had to faces many obstacles throughout life and his playing career. Jim Abbott grew up being picked on since he didn’t have a right arm. When Abbott was younger he would use a steel hook as right hand and other children were afraid of him. Also, they called him names like Mr. Hook.
The word "hero" is so often used to describe people who overcome great difficulties and rise to the challenge that is set before them without even considering the overwhelming odds they are up against. In our culture, heroes are glorified in literature and in the media in various shapes and forms. However, I believe that many of the greatest heroes in our society never receive the credit that they deserve, much less fame or publicity. I believe that a hero is simply someone who stands up for what he/she believes in. A person does not have to rush into a burning building and save someone's life to be a hero. Someone who is a true friend can be a hero. A hero is someone who makes a difference in the lives of others simply by his/her presence. In Tim O'Brien's novel, The Things They Carried, the true heroes stand out in my mind as those who were true friends and fought for what they believed in. These men and women faced the atrocities of war on a daily basis, as explained by critic David R. Jarraway's essay, "'Excremental Assault' in Tim O'Brien: Trauma and Recovery in Vietnam War Literature" and by Vietnam Veteran Jim Carter. Yet these characters became heroes not by going to drastic measures to do something that would draw attention to themselves, but by being true to their own beliefs and by making a difference to the people around them.
When Terry started running, people gave him negative critiques and claimed that his challenge is reckless. However, Terry stayed optimistic and believed himself that he can accomplish his goal. Terry says in the film that he cannot give up running because cancer patients are dying all over in Canada. He stayed positive and tried his best for thousands of people who were suffering from cancer. He had a solid resolution and he never allowed abandoning his hope. His act inspired numerous nations in Canada and he finally raised 24.7 million dollars. He taught nations that when they never give up with their dreams and continue to challenge themself, anything could become possible. Moreover, He demonstrated that overcoming obstacles would make the life bright and full of happiness. Terry could not run across Canada and live longer, but he had a fulfilling life because he overcame his disability and achieved the biggest accomplishment in
Terry Fox in my opinion was a true Canadian hero He went to his limit to fulfill the dreams of all his friends that he made in the cancer clinics. He gave his life to those people and died for them. Terry is not a person that anybody will forget. He is and amazing person and a good role model for anybody to look up to. He has proven that he can take anything the world throws at him.
Generally when you think of a hero, who do you envision? Most likely, you picture a strong and imposeing figure, someone capable of performing in high pressure situations, demonstrating bravery and passion to help his/her fellow man. Those who typically fit that role in society are firefighters, policemen, and soldiers. Those people deserve all the credit and recognition they receive for their courageous acts. However, what about individuals or groups who aren’t necessarily on the “frontlines” physically protecting others and saving lives, but who work extremely hard to improve the lives of others in some way? These everyday people deserve credit as well. After all, to the people they help, these volunteers or activists are heroes. An example of such a group is the Greensboro Four, a few African American college students in the early 1960s who helped change the landscape of segregation in the Jim Crow South.
Terry Fox has become the poster child of the person who can overcome any obstacle and triumph over any adversity that stands in his way. This is important to Canada because he is a reflection of the character of Canadians that is seen around the world. Terry Fox has given Canada a true role model. Terry Fox has shown the world that Canadians are full with heart and determination. He has shown Canadians, and the world that perseverance will pay off. Terry Fox had all the obstacles lined up and he knocked them down, although the malignant tumor in his right leg finally overwhelmed Terry, he still overcame numerous obstacles. Terry Fox had dealt with the tumor in his leg and he overcame the amputation of his leg. He also managed to train for the marathon of hope even though overcoming a physical and emotional amputation. He also was able to start his run for the marathon of Hope, by an valiant attempt to run across Canada raising money as he ran. Even though Terry Fox did not complete his goal he still lives on today in our currency, stamps, and many more ways. Terry Fox has given Canada some one that they can try to measure up to.
The population of the San Joaquin kit fox has decreased. The years that the San Joaquin kit fox has decreased from are 1930-1979. The San Joaquin kit fox has decreased because of habitat loss and prey loss.
What is a hero? For many, a firefighter, police officer, or superhuman may come to mind. According to Robert F. Kennedy, “Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or the lot of others, or strikes out an injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope.” Clara Barton, a civil war nurse and the founder of the American Red Cross, is the epitome of a hero, as her heroic acts, courage and care during the Civil War serve as an inspiration for others in today’s dark times.
Many have heard of the name Terry Fox in Canada as he is a national icon. What allowed him to be so great, so famous in Canada? Was it because he was a cancer activist or because of the huge idea to run across Canada? I believe it is both. Terrance Stanley Fox or Terry fox was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 28 1958. He was one of four children.
Generally, Terry Fox is a hero because he ran for cancer research perseveringly. Terry believed that he could make it all the way to the cool waves of the Pacific. He dipped his right knee on the coast of the Atlantic and carries 2 bottles of water. He wanted to keep one of them as a souvenir and dump the other one on to the Pacific Ocean. This was a goal Terry had set for himself that h...
Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. They can be fictional or nonfictional. Maybe a hero is a child or possibly an ordinary person. People can also have multiple heroes. Whatever, I think of my current hero, Erin Gruwell comes to mind. She is caring, selfless, and inspiring. Sometimes in life a hero commits minute acts of kindness.
Steve Fossett was born on April 22, 1994. He was an american businessman and traveler who set amazing records in flight and sailing. In 2002 he was the first balloonist to travel around the world alone. Meanwhile, in 2005 he was also the first person to fly airplane nonstop around the world. He flew the GlobalFlyer, a specific plane that had 13 fuel tanks and a 7 foot cockpit. He took off from Salinas, Kansas on February 28 and returned at around 67 hours later on March 3. On February 8, 2006, he took off from Canaveral, Florida and took on the longest airplane flight without stopping. Unfortunately, at around 76 hours later, on February 11, he had made an emergency landing in Bournemouth, England. As a matter of fact, he actually covered a
An example, of heroes are all those people who have fought and some who lost their lives on September 11. Many random bystanders helped dozens of people get out during the time of the collapse and still went back in with the firefighters to save many more lives. Even former U.S Marines put their uniforms back on to help search through the rubble
One of the ways I see a hero is by someone being a catalyst for society change. That shows someone making a difference in life. One example shown is by Sherman Alexie where he talks about growing up reading books at home in Superman and Me. Most of the people in the reservation he grew up in didn’t feel like moving up in the world, Sherman was different than the others due to the reason that in his world a very smart Indians shows a lot of danger in their society for that even today tribes believe that “a smart Indian is dangerous” (Alexie 294). The danger of intelligence in their society means that either that they’ll no longer be a part of their society or that they could try to take over parts of their society.
A hero is described as a person who is has exceptional success or honorable traits. After watching videos and reading articles, the two men mentioned have changed the world in their own distinct ways. Both heroes mentioned are remarkable people that carry out their legacies to others by their motivating stories. One heroic figure mentioned was Greg Mahle; a man of Zanesville, Ohio who spends two days of every month saving dogs from their “death row” in the south. In the article, “Homeward Bound,” it states, “32 shelters reported taking 62,540 dogs; 43,278 of them were put down, according to Maddie’s Fund, a nonprofit organization that tracks canine euthanasia statistics.” Greg has rescued dogs and then puts them in the safe hands of a loving owner. Zach Sobiech, a seventeen year old senior was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a cancerous bone tumor that develops in children in the year of 2009. He was running with his sister and noticed his side was hurting. After visiting a doctor, they found cancer throughout his pelvis and left leg. He would only live so long, until he departed to heaven above on May 20, 2013. Both Greg and Zach have differences where Greg is saving lives and Zach is dying. However, they are both showing the world true determination throughout their stories. Both heroes mentioned are extraordinary heroes that share their inspiring stories to others.
