“That is my message to you comrades: Rebellion!”(Orwell 4) was a line said by Old Major while giving his speech to the animals. With Old Major’s speech and ideas about animalism, he plants the seed of rebellion against Mr. Jones in the minds of the animals. His utopian vision of a farm where all animals share in equal work and enjoy benefits together, is destroyed and turns into a complete totalitarian dictatorship. The utilization of terror, propaganda, and constitutional violations are all ways in which Animal Farm resembles a totalitarian state.

Terror is used to a great extent on Animal Farm. George Orwell makes that known in chapter 5 when Napoleon uses terror to kick out Snowball. “At this there was a terrible baying sound outside, and nine enormous dogs wearing brass-studded collars came bounding into the barn. They dashed straight for Snowball, who only sprang from his place just in time to escape their snapping jaws.”(Orwell 67) Earlier in the novel, Napoleon takes a group of puppies from their mothers, and trains them to become his own personal “guard dogs”. On Animal Farm, terror was used to a great extent towards the animals to get to obey and stay loyal to Napoleon. Misleading information known as propaganda was greatly used by Squealer and Napoleon to make the animals think of Napoleon as a brave and heroic leader. The violations done to the constitution by the pigs to accommodate their actions was another reason as to why Animal Farm became a totalitarian state once again. Napoleon uses all of these methods to ensure his power as a dictator on Animal Farm.
