In today 's modern time, not many people exercise. Most of the youth of today are overweight or obese. Teresa Anne Power wrote an article in the USA Today called "Could Yoga be the answer?”. The author of this article is wanting to get the attention of today 's youth and parents as well. Her goal is to get people to "get up and move", to be active and make healthier lifestyle choices. She uses a combination of logos and pathos to help express her opinion. This is a great way for us as America 's youth to get in better shape and stay healthier! Yoga is an excellent way to accomplish this goal we all should have! EBSCO Publishing, http://ehis.ebscohost.com/eds/delivery?sid=865 USA Today Magazine. Saying “"Childhood obesity is common, serious, and costly."’ as the headliner. It then continues to give examples of what can and probably will happen to children who are obese. These examples include stress, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, a lot of money lost paying for medication for the previous examples and a shorter life expectancy. It then goes on to explain a way to get rid and help obesity ( yoga). Stating that “"Yoga can be a gentle method for your child to get more physical activity and enhance his or her well-being." Furthermore, anecdotal reports suggest that yoga can calm children, reduce obesity, and enhance concentration.” (page 2). Anne Power concludes that obesity can be helped in a simple yet effective way. “Obesity is not a problem that can be resolved overnight or even in a few weeks. However, a daily commitment to practicing simple yoga poses offers an ideal way for safe and long-term weight-loss success. Yoga for kids is one way we can fight childhood obesity at a national level and ensure the future health of our youth.” (page 4). There and strengths and weaknesses to this article. Yoga can help prevent obesity if done daily. You must continue this each day and increase the difficulty level when needed. Although it is a good way to help obesity putting the kids in sports that they will like will help more effectively. There are tons of ways to exercise but …show more content…
Providing examples and reasons as to why yoga could help today’s children overcome childhood obesity. Power uses a combination of logos- logical, and pathos- emotions to persuade us and express her opinions. “BECAUSE of the increasing rates of obesity, unhealthy eating habits, and physical inactivity, we may see the first generation that will be less healthy and have a shorter life expectancy than their parents” is one of the few examples of pathos being used. Power uses this statement to get us to worry about our health and make us want to get healthier. “According to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, children should participate in physical activity for at least 60 minutes every day. Practicing yoga is one way they can meet this guideline while unwinding naturally. Yoga helps kids take stress in stride. Children who focus on nasal breathing feel calmer and less anxious before taking tests. This type of breathing gets more oxygen into the lungs and reduces stress, as opposed to mouth breathing, which can lead to hyperventilation and cause or worsen symptoms of high blood pressure.” (page 3). Using logical reasoning is a very effective way to convince someone of something. Power using logos makes the readers see the concept in a different light and understand better the effects obesity can/ will have. There are a lot of reasons and examples that Power gives to make her statement and
Yoga, as a way to achieve higher self-awareness, was around as early as 200 B.C. in India and has been gradually growing in popularity in the western world over the past four decades. Traditional styles of yoga, including Hatha yoga, which consists of thousands of poses, have long been studied as an effective form of complimentary or alternative medicine (CAM).
Yoga is a discipline with a scientific background that was developed over 2000 years ago. In this system of self-development the restless mind is calmed and energy is placed into constructive channels. It is not a religion as some people may be led to believe. It is a philosophy of life. The lessons learned are just as relevant today as they were when they were first created, still keeping the main principle that before you can train your mind to reach a higher consciousness you must first discipline your body. Yoga's popularity is largely due to its wide range of benefits, including therapeutic effects, muscle toning, energy increasing and concentration of the mind.
Up to 17% of children and teens in the United States are obese (Centers). Obesity is unhealthy weight gain due to poor diet and lack of exercise and is responsible for up to 365,000 deaths each year. Obesity is strongly associated with a decrease in the ability to exercise. An overabundance of fat tissue, which occurs from obesity, impairs the breathing process. The impairment of the breathing processes in youth has been linked to more damaging breathing problems in adulthood. The lack of exercise that starts a child down this path can be reversed and good exercising habits can be instilled by parents. Therefore if 1 out of 3 children are obese, what does that say about the health and wellbeing of these children? It says that these children can look forward to a life of medical problems, emotional issues, and higher costs than their non-obese counterparts. The most pressing of which are heart disease, type 2 diabetes, pulmonary...
Obesity in children across America has become an increasing public health concern. Obesity has been identified as an epidemic that is plaguing our children in the United States. In some countries around the world children are dying of starvation everyday. How can this happen when here in America the opposite is a major problem? This is not to say that in America there are no hungry or starving children. It has been proven that our children suffer from obesity, and “children who are overweight or obese as preschoolers are five times as likely as normal-weight children to be overweight or obese as adults” (“Hope”). Obesity not only can cause a child to become more prone to having health problems down the road, but it can also make them feel insecure about themselves. There needs to be action taken in schools as well as in homes to help prevent this growing epidemic.
The practice of yoga has been performed for countless years. It originated in ancient India while people were trying to maintain a state of everlasting peace. There are different traditions of yoga in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Gurus, from India, first introduced yoga in the West. Later in the 1980’s yoga became a popular system of physical exercises across the western world. The earliest archaeological evidence of yoga’s existence is found in stone that illustrates symbols and figures of yoga poses. These place the existence of yoga back to around 3000 B.C., or even dated back earlier, possibly in the stone age Shamanism.
...mption of food and physical activity. To make their children more active, parents should stop buying videogames and set a time limit to decrease the amount of time their children spend in front of a computer screen. Another way to increase physical activity is to encourage children to join an extra-curricular activity. Although it is easiest to prevent obesity at a young age, many people in the United States grow up obese or become obese. To help and to encourage adults who are suffering from obesity, they need to learn the life-threatening effects that accompany the “heavy” burden.
Childhood obesity is a serious problem among American children. Some doctors are even calling childhood obesity an epidemic because of the large percentage of children being diagnosed each year as either overweight or obese. “According to DASH sixteen to thirty-three percent of American children each year is being told they are obese.” (Childhood Obesity) There is only a small percentage, approximately one percent, of those children who are obese due to physical or health related issues; although, a condition that is this serious, like obesity, could have been prevented. With close monitoring and choosing a healthier lifestyle there would be no reason to have such a high obesity rate in the United States (Caryn). Unfortunately, for these children that are now considered to be obese, they could possibly be facing some serious health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, and some types of cancers. All of these diseases have been linked to obesity through research. These children never asked for this to happen to them; however, it has happened, and now they will either live their entire life being obese, or they will be forced to reverse what has already been done (Childhood Obesity).
This qualitative case study is an approach to research how yoga can affect the human mind in a positive way and lead to a healthy lifestyle using 2 sources one being a book called The Science Of Yoga: The Risks and the Rewards by William J. Broad 2012. And the other being a private interview with a 22 year old male Yogi. This ensures that the issue is not getting explored through one side, but rather a variety of sides which allows for different inputs to be reveled and understood. There are two key approaches that help determine if yoga helps affect the human mind in a positive way. One flourished by William J. Broad (2012) which explores different factors on how yoga contributes to a healthy lifestyle and interviews fellow yogis who give there insight on the matter. And the second being a personal webcam interview conducted by the researcher ...
We want to solve the problem by helping kids and adults each healthier by making healthier lifestyle choices when it comes to eating. We also want to also increase physical activity of children and adolescents. I believe with the proper diet and exercise we can help decrease the obesity issue in this country that has grown so much in the past two decades. Childhood obesity is a serious medical problem that affects children. Obesity is a medical term, commonly defined as being extremely overweight, which is only half the case. Exercising and eating healthy foods can benefit people physically, mentally, and emotionally. Regular participation in physical activities has been associated with a longer and better quality of life, reduced risks of a variety of diseases and many psychological and emotional benefits (Dhuruo, 2012). Physical activity is a useful mechanism in the prevention of sedentary behavior, overweight, obesity and it plays a key role in health promotion (Dhuruo, 2012). Exercising and changing life styles can help with stress and other health problems. This literature review looks at the benefits of exercising and how it decreases stress.
Approximately “22 million Americans practice yoga,” says Tony Perry, in his article in the Los Angeles Times. It is a common practice amongst many people desiring a way to become healthier. When school officials accepted the 533,000 dollar grant from a local yoga studio to practice yoga with the students and healthy eating and liv...
The benefits of yoga are endless. It affects the human mind and body in a variety of ways. Roughly 15 million Americans practice yoga, annually there is an expected increase of twenty percent in participants in the United States ("Yoga Statistics"). While Yoga is often thought of as a practice that involves circus-like poses and seemingly impossible flexibility, it is not. Even bedridden patients can gain benefit from imagining themselves going through the poses and practicing breathing techniques that are appropriate to them (Dickenson 24-25).
The goal of this study was to identify the ways in which engaging in yoga practices would alter psychological well being, and allow people to engage more fully in their lives and flourish in health and happiness. The pre and post test set up of this study allowed the researchers to see the ways in which students had been affected by their participation in the yoga teacher training. Yoga training students were engaged in a four week program. They were administered tests and the beginning of the study, prior to engaging in the program, at the end of the program, after completion, and then again at a 3 month follow up. Multiple factors were assessed, however the significant and important ones which relate directly to our understanding of healthy, happiness and wellness and the course content are extremely
