There were many sports invented in the Victorian Era that contributed to most of the entertainment in that time period. Sports varied from laid back sports like Cricket, which was most often played by the upper class, all the way to very physical sports like Rugby and football. Other sports often played were tennis, Croquet, Horse Racing, and many more.
One of the most commonly played, and most popular sport in the Victorian Era was lawn tennis. Tennis was a huge advancement in Victorian Era sports. It was first played in Victorian Era England, and resorts were the nesting grounds/birth place of tennis. (Unknown Author.) Tennis had a huge effect on activities that any class of people could participate in. Kids could play at any age, and people from any class could come and compete on the tennis court, it was the most played sport during the Victorian Era (Unknown Author). Indoor courts started around 1873, which brought a whole new level of tennis into the Victorian Era. Indoor courts were played on by mainly upper class people or the top tennis players around at the time. This advancement of competition, and new courts led to the development of National Championships in the Victorian Era (Unknown Author). These Championships became key to making money by hosting events and making people pay a certain amount to gain access to watch the matches. Tennis was arguably the most enjoyed sport of the Victorian Era, and led to many other sports in the future.

Although Rugby was only played by the boys and the men, women found a big interest in viewing from the sidelines and getting as involved as possible without actually playing (Author Unknown). In 1862, the first inner club football games were played and recorded in a newspaper. Football was a full contact sport, which often times ended up in fights and injuries. Football was popular because all of the men felt manly playing it, and the women loved watching it. Since the football games got so rough and violent they had to have soldiers standing by to supervise the games.
