Crack! You can hear the sound as the wood bat makes contact with the ball. It flies in the opposite direction of the batter at a racing speed with a direct path towards a fielder standing many yards away. With your eyes closed, it is difficult to notice the difference between cricket and baseball. In fact, both sports share a lot of the same ideas, just with different interpretations. Although there are many striking similarities between baseball and cricket, including their origins and the equipment used, an observer can notice the disparity between the two games in regards to their rules and their respectable techniques of playing.
Many people may not know that baseball and cricket both originated in England. Cricket was always the favorite sport out of the two up until the

American Civil War. This is when baseball took its turn from a popular British sport, to the “national pastime in America” (“What’s the difference” 6). When baseball was first introduced in America, it was called “Rounders”. In 1871, once baseball became more popular in America, the Professional Baseball League was born. The two leagues that were created, the National and American, were only allowed to play within their leagues in the midst of their regular season. Within these baseball leagues, there were stand out players. The most notable player in baseball history is Babe Ruth. Babe Ruth, who was known as a national hero for his many impressive home runs, played for the New York Yankees and is credited with achieving numerous World Series titles for his team (“Baseball in America: A History” 1). Although baseball is usually thought of as an American sport, it also is very popular in Cuba and Japan (“What’s the difference” 6). Back in England, the country’s main focus was on cricket. Although no one knows where cricket originated, many think it may have been derived from the Old English word “cryce” which means stick. The game of cricket also reminds people of a game called club-ball which was played in England in the 13th century. Cricket came about in England when landowners wanted to prove their superiority to their servants and tenants. They did this by playing a game, which later turned into the game of cricket (“Cricket History” 1). In baseball they play games, but in cricket they call them test matches. The International Cricket Conference is in charge of all of these test matches. Because baseball became mainly an American sport, cricket started spreading to countries other than England who eventually participated in these test matches with England. These countries include Australia, South Africa, the West Indies, Pakistan, New Zealand, and India (“Cricket History” 2). Although baseball is usually thought of as an American sport, it also is very popular in Cuba and Japan (“What’s the difference” 6). A stand out in the sport of cricket was a man by the name of Sachin Tendulkar. He made the game of cricket explode in India (“What’s the difference” 6). As one may see, there are many similarities between the two sports, but when it comes to the rules of each game, there can be seen many differences. When thinking about how a baseball game and a cricket game are played, one might think the basic rules would be similar, but this is not true. There are many aspects of each game that are different. In a baseball game there are nine innings. In each inning, the team who is up to bat sends one player to hit. This player stays up to bat until they both hit the ball and get on base or they get struck out. Once the team that is up to bat has three of their players get struck out, the teams switch positions. The team that was just up to bat is now playing the outfield (“How baseball works” 1). The main goal of the outfielders is to catch the ball and get a plater out, or throw it back to a base in baseball or a wicket in cricket (“What’s the difference” 3). In cricket, the goal of the game is just like baseball: to get more runs than the opposing team. Unlike baseball, cricket only has two innings that do not have set limits on how long they can last. The only limit is that is cant last longer than 5 days (“Cricket Rules” 1). Both baseball and cricket play with the same idea. They have a pitcher, a batter, and outfielders. This is where the first difference comes into play. The number of players and how they can be substituted into the games are quite different from each other. Cricket has 11 players on the field, while baseball only has nine.
In baseball, a player is allowed to be substituted out of the game with another player. In cricket however, there are no formal substitutions. The only exception is if a fielder gets hurt or tired. This is when a twelfth man is allowed to come in and play the injured or tired until they can return (“What’s the difference” 2). Another difference between the two is the way the field is set up. The field in baseball is called a diamond (“How Baseball Works” 1) and the field in cricket is called a ground (“Cricket Rules” 1). In baseball, the players can hit the ball in the area between the two foul lines, while in cricket the player has a full 360 degrees to work with (“What’s the difference” 1). After the players hit the ball, they have to run somewhere in order to score runs. As I said earlier, both games have a pitcher and a batter. The pitcher has the job of throwing the baseball to the batter. The pitcher has to stand at the pitching mound which is 60.5 feet away from home plate. He then throws the ball to the batter who then tries to keep the ball in play so he can possibly score. Once the hitter hits the ball, and it is determined a fair ball, the
batter runs around the bases until he eventually reaches home plate to score a run for his team (“How baseball works” 1). There is only one person up to bat at a time in a baseball game. In baseball, the players run to what are called bases. There are 4 bases all together: 1st base, 2nd base, 3rd base, and home plate (“How baseball works” 1). Once a player gets all the way around to home plate, he is finished running. It is significantly different in cricket. There are two players batting in cricket. The players only have two places where they can run. They are called wickets. Wickets are basically what bases are in baseball. The players do not stop when they reach the second wicket however. They keep running back and forth between each wicket until the opposing team gets them out. This is how runs are scored in cricket. Baseball and cricket both go off of a system of scoring runs. To score a run the players must hit the ball and run to the bases or wickets. There are many ways a batter can score a run in cricket. These methods are a “no ball”, a “wide ball”, a “bye”, and a “leg bye” (“Cricket Rules” 2). If a player in cricket hits a ball over the fence or rope without it hitting the ground first, the player will get their team 6 points. The only two ways for a baseball player to score a run is if the player runs the bases and touches home plate or if the player hit a home run. If a baseball player hits the ball past the fence, the player will get a home run. A home run is when the player gets to run all the way around the bases to score a run (“What’s the difference” 5). There are also many ways a player can get called out in both sports. In cricket, these ways are bowled, caught, stumped, hit wicket, handled ball, timed out, hit the ball twice, and obstructing the field. When a player is “bowled”, they are considered out because the ball that was bowled, or pitched, hit the batsman’s wicket behind him. When a player is caught out, the ball they hit was caught before it hit the ground. A stumped is when the wicket keeper puts down his wicket. This could cause the batsman to be out. A hit wicket is when a player gets out by hitting or knocking over their wicket. A handled ball can cause a player to be out because the batsman touched the ball with their hand, not the bat. A timed out is when a batsman is not ready for the pitch three minutes after the previous hitter was out. If a player hits the ball twice, he will be considered out unless he is protecting his wicket. A batsman could also be out if they use a bad action or profane word (“Cricket Rules”). In baseball, there are similar rules for getting out. The first way is called a flied out. This is when the batter hits the ball into the field and a player from the other team catches the ball without it bouncing. The second way a player can be called out is called a put out. This happens when a player is running from one base to the other and the player gets tapped by a baseman with the ball. The third way a batter can be considered out is call the strike out. When a player is up to bat, the umpire calls the pitch a strike or a ball. A ball happens when the pitcher throws the ball outside of the strike zone. The strike zone is different on every person. It is from the letters on your jersey to your knees. If the pitcher throws the ball in the strike zone and you either swing and miss the ball or don’t swing, you get a strike. Once you get three strikes you are out. Once three people get out, the inning comes to an end (“How baseball works” 2). In both games, whoever ends up with the most runs at the end of the game wins. One make think that after hearing the rules of both games, baseball and cricket have nothing in common, but they do use similar equipment. The equipment used in baseball and cricket are almost similar, besides a few things here and there. The basic equipment that one needs to play either sport are a ball, a bat, gloves, and any other protective gear one may need. The ball used in baseball can either be a sold cork or a rubber ball. Wrapped all the way around the ball is yarn. Then, a strong and durable material like cowhide is stitched into the yarn. A standard ball that is used in a game of baseball is nine inches around and weighs about five and a fourth ounces (Bosner 1). The ball used in cricket is similar to the baseball. It has leather wrapped around a cork ball with string stitched in. The standard size of a cricket ball is two hundred and twenty four millimeters around and weighs about one hundred and fifty six grams. The balls used in both games are usually white, except the traditional cricket ball is red (“An explanation of cricket” 1). The bat used in baseball can either be made of wood or metal, but the most commonly used bat is made from wood. The bat is two and three fourths inches in diameter and cannot be longer than forty two inches (Bosner 1). The bat used for cricket is a piece of willow with two different styled sides to it attached to a handle. Once side is flat, while the other side is curved (“An explanation of cricket” 1). This curved side allows the players to hit the ball harder and stronger. This bat, which is one hundred and eight millimeters in width and nine hundred and sixty five millimeters long, is designed perfectly for the 360 degree playing field the players have to hit the ball. In baseball, the player only has the area from foul line to foul line to hit the ball. This means the bat has to be designed for one thing: being able to swing hard at the ball. With knowing the information about the bats you would think that the cricket ball would go father when hit, but the ball is hit only eighty percent of the distant of a baseball (“What’s the difference” 1). Because the balls and the bats are both made of hard materials, the players must use some type of protective gear so they don’t get hurt. When a player is up to bat, the pitcher is throwing the ball to him, but the pitch is coming at the batter at speeds that can get up to one hundred miles per hour. At the risk of getting hit by a ball, the batter is required to wear a batting helmet in baseball (Bosner 1). When a player is up to bat in cricket, he wears pads, gloves, helmets, and anything else that will protect them from getting hit by a ball (“An explanation of cricket” 1). In both sports, the outfielder’s job is to catch the balls that players hit very far. They must have a glove, which is most likely some type of leather with a webbed pocket, to catch these balls or they would hurt their hand very badly. When it comes to the shoes ball players wear, they are required to wear cleats. These are shoes that have metal spikes attached to the bottom to give runners better support. In both sports the players wear cleats (Bosner 1), but in cricket the cleats only have spikes on soles of the shoe (“An explanation of cricket” 1). Although baseball and cricket have numerous differences, there are a few similarities, like their equipment. Baseball and cricket are alike in many ways. They both share a common background with their roots stemming from England. Furthermore, the games also play with similar equipment because both are a ‘bat and ball’ sport. The difference between the two lies within the intricacy of the rules of the games. For example, there are different numbers of fielders and also a different time allotment for each game. Therefore, with a little background knowledge, any observer will notice the difference between baseball and cricket, but also be able to recognize the resemblance between the two.
Cricket in some ways was a unifying force for the various classes in India as well as the relationship between Great Britain and India. As seen in Document 2, an Indian cricketer was invited to “...join the Sussex team,” that was a team from European country. This shows some equality between n...
1. Claim: (origin) the origin of baseball is shady at best, but one story stands out in American history is that Baseball originated from two British games, cricket, and rounders. The real inventor of the rules of the game was Alexander Cartwright, a bookseller.
The rules of baseball and softball are extremely complex, so only the basics are necessary to distinguish the sports. In both sports the primary rule is to advance the runner around the bases to home plate when the ball is hit. In baseball stealing the bases is another way to advance the runner, but this is not permitted in softball because the ball must be hit before a runner can leave the base. Baseball requires nine innings to complete a game, and softball only requires seven. The softball player is out if the last hit is a foul ball, while the baseball player stays at the plate until another strike is called or hits successfully. As one can see, a player that switches games must familiarize himself with the difference in the rules to succeed.
A team of players usually ranges from ten to forty players depending on how many people join the squad. The field consists of nine players on defense, as well as one batter at the plate playing offense. Of those nine players on the field, three play deep in the outfield (right, left, and center) who look to catch a ball hit in the air and get it back to the infield as quickly and efficiently as possible; if the ball drops then their goal is to hurry to the ball and get it back to the infield as quickly and efficiently as possible before the runner (after the ball is hit and the player gets on base because the ball wasn’t caught in the air, his title changes from a batter/hitter into a runner) advances to the next base.
A big factor in baseball is the bats. There are around a hundred different types of bats, including different brands and if they are aluminum, wood or BBCOR. Many of the high schools just recently started using wood. It all depends on the player and how they feel about the production of the bat. Some player prefer wood, others would never use a wood bat in their life. The differences in the bats are huge. Many players would argue that the performance of the bats make the choice between them easier. The different brands in bats depend on the price for e...
There are two outs in the bottom of the ninth, and the bases are juiced. The pitcher towers over everyone, the center of everyone’s attention as he gets ready to pitch off of his throne of dirt. Just one more out and his team will go to the World Series and who is behind the catcher playing one of the most valuable roles in the entire baseball game, the Umpire. Baseball has been around since for close to 2 centuries with games being played all around the globe, and where ever or whenever there is a baseball game there is a guy in a blue shirt squatted being home plate calling the game.
Cricket is a game now played all over the world. Back in the 1920s there were two main teams, Australia and England. The Ashes are a series of cricket test matches between Australia and England. The first Ashes test ever played was on March 15th 1877 in Australia. Since then Ashes tests between Australia and England have flourished numbering a series approximately every three years. The overall Ashes results are in favor of Australia, while since 1989 the Ashes series have all been won by Australia. The 1920’s Ashes saw a more even event with England winning two series, Australia three. Although Australia won 13 tests to England’s six with six draws all in England.
Bowling and Golf both share unique aspects of their individual sport. Bowling is considered an anaerobic activity, while golf is an aerobic activity. In bowling, one usually does not get sweaty or become suddenly out of breath, however, in golf, since one is consistently walking to retrieve their ball to where they the ball landed, both sports have their own purposes of exercising. In addition, in a Chicago Tribune article, Bowling may be a sport, but is it work?, by Marla Krause, interviewed the head coach of a boys' bowling team at New Trier High School in Winnetka, he says,” As exercise, it may not be like running or swimming," Durkin said, "but it takes some leg and upper-body strength to throw hard and hook the ball.” As this course taught
The ball is different in weight and size. With the weight and the size of a softball, the distance of it being hit will be less than if a baseball is hit, since the baseball is smaller. How the softball is pitched is unique than how a baseball is pitched. A baseball is not much different than throwing ball to a base, other than there being different pitches such as; fastball, slider, 2-seam, 4-seam, changeup, etc. But throwing a softball is a little more complicated. You pitch underhand! It is a little harder, because the release point is at your hip. Some of the similarities of the pitching styles are that they have some of the same pitches, changeup, and fastball. They have to both snap their wrist, but again at different points. Baseball pitchers also pitch from a hill. Their mound is more elevated than softball, we pitch ground level. A baseball mound is higher, because when they pitch they have a downward motion after they throw, but for us when we pitch, we throw straight. We drive our hips, and push off forward toward the
A travel of over 3000 miles for some, a 210 mile drive for me, just to arrive at the biggest gathering of over 1,500 twelve year olds; all just to play baseball. The only place that would be suitable for such an event is Cooperstown Dream Parks, every baseball players heaven. Cars have come to Cooperstown from everywhere for this week long tournament. I met children my age from all over the United states. I became friends with kids from Ohio, Illinois, California, I even met a player from Puerto Rico who barely spoke any english. The windows of everyone 's car decorated with the names and numbers of teams and players. Excited baseball teams spill from their Barracks and hustle toward the already crowded seating area. Festive music played over
Baseball was first introduced into the American culture, by English immigrants in the early 18th century, and its popularity slow grew. It wasn’t until the Civil War the popularity of the game spread, and both Union and Confederate soldiers played baseball during lulls in the fighting. After Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, soldiers from both the Army of Northern Virginia (Confederate) and the Army of the Potomac (Union) played baseball. (Schackelford Jul 4, 2009) This was the beginning of the American people love of Baseball began. It was also the first mention of baseball being the national game. During the bloodiest war in our countries history Baseball was there to help the two sides heal. It was another fourteen years till 1879 when Football would be invented.
Many different sports and games have been invented and started in England. Many of these are still played and remain very popular to the people of that country. The game of cricket is a very complicated sport to those who have never played with all of the rules and regulations but is one to be enjoyed by all. The exact measurements of the cricket playing field have not been officially agreed upon. The area is usually around 450 feet by 500 feet. When setting up the wicket, three stumps and driven into the ground. Each stump is about 31 inches along with one pointed end and one rounded end (Formals 24). Twenty-eight inches is left above the turf of the field. The three stumps are placed in a line with one another and the space between is just small enough to prevent a ball from passing through. When aligned they measure nine inches from the outside edges of the outer two stumps. On the rounded end of each stump is cut a half-inch groove in which the two remaining pieces of wood are placed (Formals 26). These two small, cylindral objects, called bails
In baseball the pitcher pitches overhand and fast. In softball they pitch underhand and it can be fast or slower. I think it makes it a little more difficult to hit the ball in softball since they pitch underhand and they have a bigger ball to pitch. A baseball game consists of nine innings while
That is just what fans hear when players are in the dug-out, and boy is it a beautiful sound. Many sounds you hear in a game will reoccur many times. The squeal of a little child will bring you delight, the sound of the food guys yelling “Hot Dogs! Get your Hot Dogs here!” will always tempt you. The sound of the ball smacking the catcher’s mitt will be relaxing, but the sound that will turn your head is the sound of a loud “CRACK” off the bat, in which everyone will turn to see the excitement that is unfolding. Any fan that knows anything about baseball will know the lyrics to the 7th inning stretch tradition, “Take me out to the ball game”. The ump yelling random words such as ball or strike, which no one can
From pigs running across the field and stopping the game to hitting a bird dead-on in flight, the game of cricket has had a lot of funny and interesting moments since it's beginning. Some memories are funny while others are sad or informative, but overall, this game of sport has had some really great moments that're worth sharing in a compilation of cricket facts.
